The Movie Thread

I'll end up watching the rest sometime - I usually like Nolan - but it's hard work. He's gone way too far in the other direction from Inception*

*too much exposition to what in the hell who in the hell where in the hell why in the hell just please give me a cogent plot point
Welsh was right. It's ****. Even when it was all explained at the end, I still looked at my mate, and was like wtf

Should note i dont post everything I've seen something close to 50 films in the cinema this year.

Anyway

The Ballard of Wallis Island
A great little movie about a recluse millionaire who gets his favourite folk duo to perform a private gig for him. Its great because it never feels sinister and movie feels sincere in a good way. These are just slightly broken people who get a little bit better over the course of the film.

Actually pretty optimistic about this - think it'll take a little while to get used to Neeson instead of Nielsen, but from the trailer the humour is very much a continuation and i LOVE the originals
I dunno man. Neeson doesn't have anywhere near the comedic chops that Nielsen had and I'm always wary of remakes/boots, even when I'm not a massive fan of the source movies. Definitely waiting for the reviews and some opinions (including yours) before I try it

Neeson has at least done plenty of RomComs.
Nielson had absolutely no comic background when he started doing Airplane, which led to him doing Naked Gun.

Either way, LN's role in the films wasn't really to DO (much) comedy; but to act as if his was the serious dramatic part in amongst the pandemonium - like Michael Cain surrounded by muppets.

Not another remake, sequel, prequel etc.

Can't they be original?
Gonna get on my soapbox about this (again).

I've seen 31 new films in the cinema this year. I have to get to my 16th favorite film this year before there's a remake, sequel, prequel etc. and there are only 5 total so 16%
The issue has nothing to do with original output or quality it has to do with audiences perception and what they go to see.

(I'll post my mid-year list at end of month)

Different era and different careers. Nielson did do police squad tv series after Airplane. It's a fine art with comedic acting. Even he got type cast.
I am just not convinced with Neeson, at this point of his career, after a career doing action roles; he was excellent as Oscar Schindler mind you, can now suddenly take on a comedic role. But yes, he will probably play the straight man to the other funny guys. I will probably catch the final version when it is eventually released on Netflix to reserve final judgment. But it reminds me of the Pink Panther with Steve Martin who is a comedic actor trying to take on Peter Seller's role.

It's one of those they really don't need to rehash. It just reeks of milking a cash cow and running out of ideas. Not one I'd rush to the cinema to watch.

Personally think that modern remakes are hurt by how available old movies are to stream and at movie theaters.

They were always money grabs but why go see lilo and stitch two when I can watch the original on my sofa?

That live action one looks like an utter abomination

Never realised Police Squad came after Airplane and that they only made six episodes.

Neeson was sublime as Schindler, still one of the best war films.

Steve Martin also did a reboot of Sgt Bilko, that was pretty much a disaster. He's a brilliant comic actor but should have started clear of iconic characters.

Entertainment seems to be stuck in this nostalgia loop. Very few successfully create something new. Kinda sad tbh.

A Bridge Too Far on BBC2, some classic Sunday afternoon fare

What a film and what an incredible cast, I'd forgotten how many famous actors are in it, every other scene you're like "...is that James Caan?!"

My general says there is no point in continuing this fighting! He wishes to discuss terms of a surrender!

We haven't the proper facilities to take you all prisoner! Sorry!

I thought everyone knew that God was a Scotsman.

Still one of my favourite war films along with The Longest Day, Battle of Britain, classics you can watch over and over.

Battle of the Bulge a classic as well

Grew up on those films, my Grandpa loved war films and were the only VHS tapes he had so whenever me and my brother would stay at my grandparents they were all on a loop
