Looks like Bakhmut is almost lost inside the next week unless Ukraine can make further gains to the south of the city to keep supply lines and evacuation routes open. Russia broke through in the north just 24hrs before the thawing snow and rain would have turned the north of Bakhmut into a largely impassable swamp. Major bummer primarily caused by a lack of shells and air support for Ukraine. Suggestion ground won't harden until mid April (assuming normal weather patterns).

Bakhmut has looked like falling for a couple of months now. The situation in the north looks grim although the Ukrainian army destroyed a dam and it's flooded a large area. In the south of Bakhmut the Ukrainians have counterattacked and still control the MSR. It hasn't fallen yet...

Two Ukrainian soldiers were on my flight to the UK today. One was minus a leg and the other an arm. Seeing that first hand really brought it home how tragic this all is. They were just young lads in their early 20's. I would guess they are receiving medical help here.

I'm not a military history folk, but...

It could be bad, if either side was looking for an excuse - but as it is, both are desperate to keep the USA out of direct action.

Russia fired on a Turkish ship which is part of Nato. If they aren't going to get involved because of that then they aren't going to get involved over a collision.

It could be a cunning plan by the Russians to get rid of the drone without the repercussions that actually shooting it down would cause.

Rumours of an impending large counter attack by Ukraine are filtering though the Russian telegram channels. This is ironically the best source of info when the Russians are in a bad situation, there tends to be a flood of russian bloggers asking for ammo and reinforcements and they are quite happy to point fingers to military leaders outside their faction (of which there are many)
