Transfers 2013/14

Lozada, capped 22 times by his country, joins from French Top 14 side Agen and has immediately linked up with the squad this week at a pre season camp in France.

This man is not an experienced, grizzled Tight-head prop - what are we doing signing him! :P

I feel we're really going to town on our locks...

Launchbury, Myall, Palmer, Cannon, Hughes plays there a bit, Lozada. There's also Will Rowlands coming through well in the academy...

Just announced as Glaws academy manager.
Aha - this was rumoured mid-July on Shedweb, around the time when Stanley stepped up to the first team.

And tbf, I can certainly see why Bucko has done this. Academy manager is a serious coaching role and a much stronger stepping-stone into first team coaching than being a player-coach, and the position could have been filled for years afterwards had he not taken the position himself. He presumably didn't know that the position would be available when he signed for Bristol.

Edinburgh have signed two Scottish qualified players, scrum half Grayson Hart and second row Ollie Atkins.
How long before caps?

The SRU really are taking their hunt for players with Scot qualified players seriously. It's not even just players like Maitland and Heathcote who had reputations before being poached, they are giving out Edinburgh/Glasgow contracts to no names with a Scottish granny as well.

To be fair, I can see that if they have a successful team in the run up to and during a "home" (...or not, come 2015!) WC then it may help them actually develop their own players.
If that's what they are trying to do...

It's one thing poaching Maitland and Visser who clearly improve the squad, or even Heathcote who clearly has potential. But why poach little known players who have failed to make the grade in their home country like Ollie Atkins or Greig Tonks and hand them Edinburgh or Glasgow contracts based on being Scottish qualified?

Whether it's effective or not is another matter... It does seem to be what they are doing though.

“There are probably other players of a similar ilk that we are looking at who will arrive in the next month or so to help the existing player base go through the season. I would think that in the next week there will be further announcements.”

“I have signed up until 2017 and I am pretty much committing the rest of my career to Bath,†said Louw who has won 19 caps for South Africa.

Wow.

I have a feeling this is probably influenced by his personal situation too, I think his other half is studying at Bath uni.
Phenomenal work by the management/Bruce Craig.

Darragh Fanning appears to be have plucked out of the AIL to provide back three cover for Leinster for the opening part of the season. A sensible decision considering a lack of depth there.
