USA news & politics

20 years is a long time and more importantly the 3 or so years Trump has left in office is also a long time. Let’s see what else he gets up to. He likes invading capital cities in January. Let’s see who’s next.

Your not wrong, hes gone through a hell of a lot of work in 12 months, maybe more so than most do in 4 years, i think thats why i dont see him lasting all 4, either health, legal or family issues around the corner maybe?

Id be on board with this if the US position wasnt that Urrutia is the true president elect, and neither has he been installed (yet).

Its more likely Trump will work with whatever Maduro loyalist plays ball first, and if they dont then look for regime change, in which Machado isnt top of the list surely?

I would take issue with your use of the word “work” here but yeah **** knows. I’d imagine he’ll see out his term but, yeah, dunno really. I just hope the assault he’s launched on democratic norms and institutions doesn’t do any long term damage once he leaves office but I’m not so optimistic.

Ive got a 50 on him not making the end of his 2nd term, i lost the Biden 50 obviously so im hoping Trump makes my money back! Odds are a bit more attracrive at 13/8.

I can only thing I could see happening is some health issue but my money would be on him staying on. Thank god he’s not 20 years younger otherwise I would be worried about a 3rd term.

The Trump admin has completely ignored demands by Congress to release the Epstein files in full, with the redactions on those released dented excessive to the point of non compliance. This is a foreshadowing of what's going to happen if the Democrats retake Congress and start trying to rein in the executive.

It really drives home the whole "power lies where people believe it does".

Alright Varis!

“We live in a world, in the real world, Jake, that is governed by strength, that is governed by force, that is governed by power,” he said. “These are the iron laws of the world since the beginning of time.”
What a pathetic little worm of a man he is - would love to see him try and take anything from anyone by force, he looks like a gentle breeze would knock him out

It's all starting to feel inevitable, not a military overthrow but enough consistent pressure that it happens one way or another, be it all-but-by-name or actual annexation

It would be the end of NATO, which is exactly what Trumps handlers want I guess
Then again with quotes like that coming from an actual high level government official is NATO over with now anyway? How could any nation trust the US again?

The only thing the rest of the world could realistically do is suspend all diplomatic/trade relations with the US - doubt it'd be enough, the people pulling the strings are insulated enough from the real world that it'd just be everyone else getting hurt, and they don't care about anyone else but themselves and their egos

Honestly feel Greenland is more posturing like Canada than actual intent more as a negotiating tactic.
Partly do think that, but then, after reading some articles about it, I partly do think they really want exclusive mining rights to the rare earth elements there - the whole world is essentially reliant on China for REE (they produce around 70% of the total) and USA wants in on it, and thinks the best thing to do is to take over Greenland and their resources, rather than just outbidding the Chinese/Russian companies who also want to mine them

The whole security aspect of it is a red herring - they have a military base there already, they used to have a load more (16?) but closed them down because they didn't need them - nothing to stop them negotiating an increased military presence (probably would've just been a box ticking exercise before all this talk kicked off), saying they need to own the land is ridiculous

The stupid thing is, with all these resources, why is Europe constantly handicapping itself?

The current situation is European idealism butting up against might makes right, and idealism is losing badly.

It's all very well having noble ideas but fundamentally you always need to have a big stick ready to use for those who don't subscribe to a peaceful world view. Europe has forgotten that and is now getting screwed over from all sides.

I think the REE point is a massive one. Moving away from fossil fuels means batteries and tech. Also AI is going to require a lot of REE for data centres etc. It's a battle for resources.

The US need to compete with China and Greenland might be the answer for them. It won't just rip apart Nato but the EU as well.
