Wales v South Africa

I really wouldn't be surprised if this turned out to be a proper arm wrestle. I see plenty of Welsh supporters here expecting a convincing loss but I'd actually be surprised if we ran away with it.
Usually I would agree with you as history suggests games between us are pretty tight arm wrestles but this team is very inexperienced (got even more so with Biggar and Liam Williams out) we’re at home I suppose but I’m expecting at least a 14 point win to SA due to the team. Any SA team you play is going to be hard but this is about as fully loaded as you get (even starting your best hooker for once)

It’s crazy to me that while I’m obviously happy we’re having a proper look at Costelow that we’ve had Jarrod Evans wasting away over all these years whos a more experienced, older, slightly bigger, and significantly better version of Costelow. Hopefully Costelow turns out to be a lot better player than Evans in the future but it’s just such a waste.
Biased for me to agree but the amount of times J Evans hits holes and get the team on the front foot is amazing. With a decent team behind him he can be great for the attack. Gutted he's left Cardiff but understand why

I'm expecting the same. It's also Gatland, so I just expect this to be a close game of 2-5 points in the end. In general I just don't think we have clicked as a team at this point in the season (granted its been a ton of chopping and changing). Hopefully in these last two games we get some cohesion running. Nice to also have some locks in this one who are fairly familiar enough from training and playing with each other at club level... it's just interesting that they both play for is Munster.

Cuthbert has pulled out now so Rogers, annoyingly, goes onto the wing. Pleased he gets another start but wanted to see him at 15. LRZ on the bench now.

Surely that’s it for Cuthbert and Anscombe. You can’t not play a single minute of the warm up games and get selected for the squad, unless your name is Faletau of course.

I'd be pleasantly surprised and you'd know that Welsh side better than what I do but if Wales bring what I expect of a typical Welsh performance (even if its just accurate goal kicking, some semblance of parity at set piece and tenacity on defence and letting us play the rugby) regardless of the specific individuals I can see you push us close to the point of getting a close W. We've had difficulty converting dominance into points, have been struggling in the line-out and even though our scrum is still strong we don't get rewarded under Brace if Wales are switched on and taking advantage of his "style". Also, goal kicking has been an issue and though all that *could* come right within the space of a week I'll believe it if I see it.

It's also Brace refereeing and we seem to struggle with his breakdown whistling and not get rewarded at the scrum even giving away a penalty vs NZ even if it was clear De Groot was angling in on Malherbe.

Ugh not Brace. The man has no bias, he is just incredibly inconsistent and in general poor. It’s just frustrating to watch.

First time I saw him ref England v Wales I was conviced of his bias. Then I saw he was just as bad in every other game.

Still not sure he should be doing Wales games though.

We get him in the URC a ton. I'm almost at the point of acceptance. Anger, denial, sadness and all the rest almost past. It's just on the international stage its all still new to me and I find I get confused all over again.

I was shocked he made it into the panel to ref at the World Cup tbh.

Makes a change. Its normally Malherbe angling in on the loosehead.

Kolisi giving us big love before SA savage us. Love the dude.

"We respect Wales hugely because we believe they are similar to us, the way they are as hard-working people who don't get everything.

"I think it's exciting, tough, but an exciting period for Welsh rugby and that's why the (our) coaches know, give them respect, we're choosing the best team possible in the preparation week with the players because we have so much respect for the Welsh (Rugby) Union, the Welsh players and I have no doubt they will come out of this period stronger.

"They are tough people, they don't go away. They play similar to us. Strong kicking game. They are just hard, hard people, who who will go to the darkest... to the gutters, and we know that.

"A lot of the players have similar stories to us in South Africa. Where they started before they became rugby players. We get along off the field because we are similar people. So we have so much respect for them. That's why the semi-final in 2019 was so difficult because we played a similar style of game. One mistake or one penalty.

"We speak like this of every nation. But, we really do respect Wales, a lot."

Over the last 2/3 years, I’ve expected the Boks to give Wales a pasting every time they play each other but it never turns out like that. It’s weird how SA routinely put England to the sword but they always struggle against the Welsh. If that calibre of Welsh team was in England jerseys I’d be saying 20 points minimum. I think SA will win by 8 points, Wales will keep it close again.

SA lost at least 12 months of rugby to Covid, at least we got to play behind closed doors. This led to the development of their game being delayed compared to the other Tier 1 nations. I think they’re doing a good job of catching up, but I suspect the RWC is coming a couple of months too soon for them.
The Jones & Pivac regimes played a similar role in stunting the English and Welsh games, but lasted much longer than Covid….
