No such luck. Without some desperate last-minute manoeuvring by Wasps, the dramatic news that three of their internationals - James Haskell, Riki Flutey and Tom Palmer - will sign for French clubs next season, and that at least two other leading English players are set to follow them across the Channel, will cause deepest gloom at Wasps and across the whole of English rugby. Among the leading French rugby clubs, the credit crunch is something that is happening to other people. One chairman of another Guinness Premiership club told us yesterday that deals offered to some England players by French clubs of late more than double their existing salaries. We understand Flutey has been offered a contract worth more than £300,000 per season, almost treble his current deal.

Haskell will be the most significant departure, and arguably in the history of English rugby. He is deemed by many to be on the verge of true world class and when he retires, could be numbered among the finest English back-row players. Wasps will be bitterly upset at losing a player they nurtured in their academy system but yesterday, a Wasps source admitted they had given up hope of retaining him and he is likely to sign for Stade Français in Paris or Clermont Auvergne. It is impossible to believe that Haskell's deal for a three-season stay would come in at under £1m.[/b]

Is Stephen Jones related to Haskell or does he merely have a "man crush" for him?!

A lot of this has been touched upon already. No mention of Cipriani (who may or may not have signed a new deal) or Rees joining the exodus. Palmer's loss can be covered pretty easily, they'll cope without Haskell but need to bring in some backrow cover and Flutey is a mercenary who can be replaced. It's an awful lot of experience to be losing in one swoop though.

I think Cipriani has signed a one year extension.

Out of Palmer, Haskell & Flutey... Flutey would be the biggest loss.

The Times have updated their story:
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div>
Haskell has agreed a lucrative two-year deal with Stade Français while Wasps will announce on Tuesday that Cipriani has signed a one-year contract extension with them........ While Haskell's switch to Stade has yet to be confirmed, sources in France say the deal is worth around £700,000......Palmer is also heading for Stade, while Flutey is on the verge of a move to Brive, where Goode, Steve Thompson and Ben Cohen are in residence.......Tom Rees is also due to be confirmed as Wasps' new captain.[/b]

So Flutey and Geoff Murphy are on their way to Brive!

Short career so you can't blame players trying to get the best deal possible.

If Johnson continues to pick England players based in France (ala Goode) then we could see many more leaving the GP for the Top 14.

Does this mean they cant play for England as they are outside of the new agreement on player release? saying that it hasnt done Goode too much harm!

Riki Flutey.

Does this mean England are going to have a Kiwi player, living in France playing for the English international team?

I'd have a serious problem with that if it occurred in the Irish National team.

Actually, I'm curios. How do others feel about that? Player not resident playing on the residency rule.

Well you used to have an Australian who played in England and is now Englands attack coach, Brian Smith.

For me you pick your best players regardless of where they earn their crust. If he's available for selection then he should be considered if that's who the England management want.

I'd have no problem with players playing abroad being picked it's more with a player who's only just qualified on the residency rule playing abroad and still playing for an adopted country.

But I see where you're company and I have no problem with it being just me who has a problem with the idea.

Parisse - Leguizamon - Taylor - Mauro Bergamasco - Rabadan - Burban - Charlon - Haskell.

Good way to complete our personal collection. And to waste some money for a (good) player we don't need.

That is just rediculous, why would a player like Haskell want to move to a team where he might not get many games, this could destory his career if he can't hold down a regular spot (look at someone like Aled Brew, played well for Dragons, got called up for Wales, returned to the Ospreys then Blues and couldn't get a game = fallen off the radar, slight difference in quality though!)

The way French clubs are spending you'd expect them to dominate the HC, yet it's their worst showing for how many years, if not ever? Yes I know, as an O's fan I can't talk, but at least were through to the quarters.

I have news from within the Blues camp that the Blues are trying to hijack a deal for Haskell!

They don't need him either! They've already got Powell, Williams, Rush, Militika (granted Molitika is getting on) and Warberton etc. They need to concentrate on replacing Spice (Cooper being perfect) and ummmm, that's about it really. Warberton is easily good enough to come in for an ageing Molitika and Williams has a few years left in him for the Blues + Sowden Taylor.

That reminds me, any news on when Warberton will be fit again Cymro, he's been out for what seems an eternity, I was expecting him to be pushing for a Wales spot by now.

Just be confirmed that Haskell, Palmer and Fluety are all off to France

Haskell and Palmer to Stade Francais And Fluety to Brive

What does this mean to English Rugby? Is the credit crunch hitting the clubs that bad?[/b]
At least Haskell can now live his dream of being a porn star.

Bye-bye, Cyclops! =-D

He'll get torn a new arsehole in the Top 14. Especially as there'll be no uncles Probyn nor Blackett to ban everyone who dares tackle him.

His arrival may cause the departure of Mauro Bergmasco to the Racing Metro. Maybe with his brother, but that's just rumors.
