Wellington Sevens, 3-4 February 2012

Good job the security were there, really - He would have had 14 pretty ****** off rugby players running at him otherwise.

Didn't see any of the games but just read an article with the results etc.
Well done to Tonga and Canada making the quarters!

A really interesting day 1, with some big upsets. Pools A and B went more or less as expected, but Tonga ended up topping pool C, with Canada winning pool D. The Cup Quarter finals are as follows:

New Zealand vs France
Tonga vs England
Canada vs Samoa
South Africa vs Fiji

From a NZ perspective it was a pretty good day 1, with the exception of the injury to Toby Arnold, which happened 20 seconds into the first match. He will certainly be missed, as he's been a consistent performer over the last couple of years. It was interesting to see how little Hosea Gear was used in day - hopefully that means he will be fresh to be unleashed on day 2! I thought both England and South Africa both looked impressive on day 1 too.

Canada lost to Samoa in extra time a great tension filled game. Paris had a rough one for Canada though really botched some feeds into the scrum.

Good for Canada :)

Wonder how they will perform on near home turf next week...

Come on New Zealand!!! Half time England 12 New Zealand 0 Nooooooooooooooo

this ref has been outstanding :D

Kenya looked much better this event they had played really poorly until now. Tonga had a great tournament also.

New Zealand just got through there... I hope we have a competent ref for the final, as the Australian ref was hopeless (for both teams...).

Looks like we will be playing Fiji.

Sekonaia Kalou you are ****ing amazing, he's been turning over lineous, brilliant under the high ball, fiji sevens team has needed a guy like him for so long

Gear had little opportunities but has only looked all right. I think this goes to show that players can't just waltz into 7's and it is a specialist sport. Gear is obviously good enough to make the squad but I would be disappointed if in 2016 we had a heap of All Blacks in our side.

Scotland got it back at the end

When is the final ti be played, still today?

I thought he has been pretty good, especially with what ball he was given. Didn't really see too much game time either. I thought he was a lot better than Charles Piutau who seemed to have moments of class with his stepping but never seemed to show out and out pace and had poor ball security.
