I have been lucky in general my gyms have been pure strength and conditioning places with plenty of loose weights and various racks etc I can work with and my fellow members are decent and know not to be doing an exercise in the wrong station.

But due to them having a small redevelopment I have had to go somewhere else for the next month this was a larger more commercial gym and where I experienced Crossfit for the first time watching in I thought it was a special program to help certain special individuals keep fit and I thought it was a good idea until........

I was told by an instructor that it is the big thing in strength training and everyone was doing, he then wanted to see if I wanted to have a go, after looking at 2 grown men throw a barbell to each other I said no thanks Jeff and carried on waiting for some knob to stop curling In the only squat rack this "big" named gym seemed to have.

So what the **** is Crossfit exactly and does it work because to me it looks like one big cluster**** and a injury waiting to happen.

Bingo!

...in all seriousness - I don't want to **** on crossfit, because it's got a lot of people (women in particular) into various forms of barbell strength training, and that's a good thing.

There isn't really a "crossfit" style of training it's just non-specialist - you're trying to be strong and fit, essentially.

A lot of people do a lot of really, really, really ****ing dumb things with barbells in the name of crossfit, and that's a very bad thing.

At the end of the day you should be able to tell wether it's for you or not, my guess is that it isn't...

It really really depends on how good the coaches are at your crossfit playpen, or whatever they call themselves.

You can essentially buy the ***le of crossfit coach, so if you're thinking about going into it you have to really check the place out and see what the coaches are like. They're training people to do difficult lifting techniques at very high levels of intensity/exhaustion which is a recipe for disaster if form isn't impeccable.

Watching some stuff on YouTube is the sole aim of Crossfit is to lift as much and do as much as you can without any fuks given to form?

There pull ups are the weirdest thing I have seen, and to me the way some handle weights is reckless.

Think your right rats it isn't for me prefer to have form and push myself that way.

Wow there is even a Crossfit games?

YES YES YES. Crossfit can be done well and can be a good workout regime, but there are some examples of truly idiotic things happening. I've heard of people squatting while balancing on exercise balls, etc. There are a lot of idiots out there.

Anyway, don't shun the true path. Pick up heavy things. Put them down again. Squat twice a week. Live.

Amen. Good lift.

Definitely encourage avery woman you know to regularly attend this crossfit gym though.

It is good that women are realizing that they can do a bit of gym work without getting really bulky. Toned and trim = excellent. Far preferable to really skinny girls.

By far the best thing to come of it, closely followed by getting powerlifting and weightlifting more widely respected.

Agreed.

Love a girl with a bit of muscle.

Also shows determination.

I suppose it is like most weight related things research goes a long way.

Have a few friends who swear by it, and have attended a couple of sample sessions myself.

Really does depend on the trainers though.

Incidentally, I thoroughly enjoyed the sessions I went to, even if I was told to go sit down for a while as I'd turned a strange grey/green colour.

I think as long as you know what it really is (cardio in the form of weight lifting) and don't go into it thinking it'll turn you into the kind of people you see at the crossfit games (nearly all of whom are either ex-pro athletes or come from a power/olympic lifting background, so aren't "built" by Crossfit).

I've considered going along just for the fitness aspect of it, but it's so bloody expensive that I've never bothered.

I do CrossFit myself mostly to gain strength and speed during the offseason and it's working great for me. Lots of variation so your body never knows whats going to happen but that's the fun part to me. Hopefully this can better prep me for my second rugby season for my university.
Also if you do crossfit use Progenix or Whey or some other protein powder it's making me gain a lot in the past six weeks.

How do you know if someone does Crossfit?

Don't worry, they wont hesitate in telling you all about it :)

There is a joke,

An athiest, a vegan and a crossfitter walk into a bar. I only know this because they told everyone in the first five minutes.
