A Political Thread pt. 2

This guy appears pretty sound on the whole matter. And is followed by a bunch of journalists.
Yeh he's the one I'd recommend in terms of following on tax issues. Former head of tax at Clifford chance but made a bundle and gave it up to set up Tax policy associates.

He's done a podcast on bbc sounds as well where he goes into the so called Beatles tax which I found very interesting. Basically they tried to turn income into capital to avoid paying tax at the time. But it came back to bite them in the butt. Moral of story is: never do something just because of tax.

It appears the complication is she didnt own another property as you and I understand it. It was owned by a trust which by our laws meant she did own it for stamp duty. So it appears did Rayner seek legal advice about her liability in regards to the trust. If she did she's completely without fault (its not her job to know the law) if she neglected to mention the trust. Its a question of innocent mistake or deliberate. Could be more likely innocent mistake.

However looks like she did seek legal advice so up to standard committee to decide the circumstances.

The whole stamp duty thing stinks,
I don't care that it's technically legal it's just the optics of it all
Keep squeezing and squeezing the PAYE payees while doing everything you can to avoid paying your fair share

"Difficult decisions" to be made about benefit cuts, tax raises etc. but easy decisions to be made if I can get away with paying less than everyone else!

Ignorance isn't a defence for breaking any laws no matter what they are

Really not sure she survives the court of public opinion.

Not sure either if she'll ever say the law firm or who gave her the advice. I'd assume no law firm worth it's salt would cough to giving duff advice.

Starmer must be pulling his hair out with this and the free speech fight. Can't see the budget going down well either.

One of the few times it is...well not really she'll have to pay the money plus interest supposedly. So she's still liable.

But if you've done what a lawyer has told you and you gave them your details its absolutely thier malpractice and not on you.

However yes I think she's flat on her arse. Public wise.

A little out of left field, but thought this was an interesting story, as it was my dinner conversation with my German in laws...

In the upcoming election in Cologne, all major parties have signed a pact, to not mention migration in a negative connotation. Signed a literal pact lol. All sat around, and encouraged anyone viewing any party member, or canvassers who didnt discuss migration positively to be reported...

They refused to allow the AFD to attend, as they dont share their values, and the AFD stated they wouldnt have signed anyway.

The day after CDU incumbent Wust voted against a migrant centre to be built, and hes being accused by the church (yes they have the church overseeing it hahhahaha) of breaking the pact lol.

In another strange twist, a 4th AFD candidate has died in the last 2 months, mere days before a bye election in which the date was decided not to be changed, and all postal and early votes cast have been deemed invalid. Councils are struggling to print new and get them out on time...

Apparently Musk has tweeted about it recently also, not sure how I missed that news.

I have very non AFD in laws sharing concerned views about the state on german politics (its not really their concern though if you ask them, theyre Bevarian not German lol)

So we have moronic pacts that have the way for AFD, but also AFD candidates dropping like flies, and councils fighting to use that as an advantage.

It's a local election, no one has the power to effect migration, Cologne is one of the most liberal left cities in Germany and fairness agreements are common in German elections.

Wüst has a much larger role than mayor or council as the minister Präsident of Nordrhein Westfalen

The two biggest election issues for the locals will be homelessness and public transport.

From a friend living in Kõln.

Your not wrong, Cologne is definately left, and fairness agreements are regular, but they never monitor or dictate content. They're usually to keep the race civil, not attacking each other personally, sharing space equally, agreeing on things like candidate replacement delays lol.

The AFD are usually frozen out of these events, which i cant see is tactically smart long term.

From what im told this is big news in Germany, and now the AFD are framing it as a big free speech issue, specifically because all major parties have agreed to speak positively about a specific issue.

The other rarity is that Churches arent usually overseers, especially if they write letters requesting parties specifically exclude the AFD, this apparently is concerning for people.

Im unaware of the major issues in the run up, my knowledge of the region is limited to gawping at my in laws lol. Id imagine infrastructure like housing and transport (they are ******* addicted to transport discussion) are probably top of the pile as your friend says

And 30% penalty of the underpaid tax for carelessness. That’ll depend on the advice she was given and what she told them about the trust. If she neglected to tell them about it when she was advised that’s on her.
