No surprise there. Such a small firm wouldn’t advise on tax. That’s up to Rayner to check with a properly qualified tax advisor before the transaction took place.
FWIW The deeming rule on parents is something most would completely miss without realising it. Always easy to say get advice with the benefit of hindsight. But Rayner just happens also to be housing secretary and deputy PM though. She’s been careless at worst.

What that firm has come out and said is in line with my understanding. Conveyancing legal work in relation to buying a property is typically administrative as opposed to advisory. If someone wanted tax planning advice they would usually engage the services of another solicitor who operates in that field and isn't involved in the transaction.
Rayner said she took advice pre completion and so she may well have lied about that or misunderstood what legal advice actually means because it doesn't sound like this firm gave her any re. SDLT. It's not looking too rosy for her.

This is one firm saying they didnt give legal advice. She could of asked for it elsewhere.
This definitely feels like something that would trip up average person in the street.
EDIT: I think she's toast though reagrdless of the whos whats wherefores.

Rayner herself has said she took advice before completing the transaction and then sought further 'expert advice' after she got caught.
The full facts haven't been established yet so of course nothing can be ruled out at this stage. I was commenting on that firm feeling the need to come out and clarify that they never gave advice which in itself is rather telling IMO.

This is disgusting. Guy is there being about as un-confrontational as you can be and it turns to that. They definitely would have attacked him if the police weren't there seeing as the were whipping themselves up into a rage based on their own lies.
