A Political Thread pt. 2

If we had a vote on it I would personally vote to scrap the monarchy, but I wouldn't have massively strong feelings either way. Listening to this just made me think of how out of touch the concept of a monarchy is in modern Britain and I would move into campaigning to abolish the monarchy.
Yeah, I was always pretty indifferent towards them,
I like history so kinda liked the nostalgia factor and all that

Now I fully think they should be abolished and it's pretty ridiculous that they still exist
People like to point out how they're needed because they're one over the government... ignoring that when BoJo flat out lied to the queen's face she didn't care (and then went on to influence sketchy laws that would benefit the royals)

As a bit of a related tangent (noncey relation of the queen) I was going through historic documents in work with Mountbatten on all over them. She must be fed up of scum giving her headaches.

Interesting, but i'll believe it when I see it
Reported by FT as well, it also relies on the local parties paying attention and not deciding try anyway. It tends to be those folks in marginals that cause the most problems.

Reality is it makes political sense they are probably a handful of seats where LD's and Lab have a similar chance of ousting a Tory and it actually being close. Far better to step aside. Last election there were at least 4-5 seats where both side saying they could win led to both loosing.

I'll also believe it when I see it. It's easy in seats where one of the 2 "cooperating" parties is clearly behind but where it is a close race, neither is likely to back down.

What private income?!?

It's all either our taxes or investments due to our great grandparents taxes.

They've done fuk all to earn any private income and should all be hunted out. The French has the right idea.
Sorry but by that argument anyone who is paid by the government doesn't have their own private income...

Technically yes. The difference is that most people are paid by the government as a wage, where as the Queen is given a grant. It's also the amount of public money used to fund the Queen compared with what people get as a wage that makes it a bigger issue.

It may be but the fact remains that it is still technically private money rather than public. The fact someone is paid by the government does not mean it remains public money.

The Queen is given a grant to spend as she wishes just for being the Queen whilst already having everything provided for her? That's strange to say the least.

It's gas having royals in a neighbouring country, like a real life soap opera and one that's getting more and more outlandish in an attempt to cling to views currently!

We have to pay otherwise they descend from their castles and whisk our children away never to be seen again

Queen would beat your little wizard man in a fight tbh so pipe down x

Not to mention that it's money "earned" on her private property, that the government manages on her behalf.
If I had a second house (I wish), and rented it out through an agent, then claiming the sovereign grant is "taxpayer's money" would be like claiming that rent is the agent's money, they're giving me as a gift.
The queen owns lots and lots pf properties, all over the country (and outside). She gets rents and earnings directly from the Duchey of Lancaster; the rest is as above (managed by the government, and handed over to her)

IIRC though, the taxpayer does top it up if the money earned on the royal estates decreases year on year - so this year specifically, there may have been an input from the taxpayer.

Having said all that - I'd be all in favour of shrinking the royal family to a more nuclear family; and mostly in favour of getting rid altogether.
