A Political Thread pt. 2

I think the West has to accept that the Ukraine is (unfortunately) toast and all it can do is continue to condemn publicly, alienate Russia economically via maximum sanctions and be seen to be bolstering security and defence in NATO member states like Latvia, Estonia, Poland etc.

trouble with that is China is going to be watching the reactions to this and if Russia get Ukraine I expect China to do something similar soon

Military action in Ukraine isn't an option otherwise it's game over for everyone (Biden has said as much). Unfortunately I can see a similar outcome for Taiwan - also a non NATO member state.

Yeah your issue there are the big weapons that go boom in catastrophic ways or are we forgetting Russia is a nuclear power? Its why there was never a direct conflict in the cold war and again this will be fought over proxy wars rather than direct conflict. If you fly into Ukraine you threaten exactly that.
Indeed. I’m not just worried about physical weapons though. My concern is the cyber threat.

Well time to get drafted I guess
We'll probably sit this one out again but if you lads can step up and make sure I don't have to speak another foreign language that'd be great!

I was totally wrong about this, really didn't expect him to go through with it. Will admit I didn't realise the power Russia have over Germany re providing energy, it was unwise from the Germans to allow that to say the least, especially with France next door being a large exporter.

Hopefully there's more intelligent people than me looking at what to do here because I wouldn't know where Id start.

Not that high a threshold I see…

Too late for that now, this should have been done a while back. We had indications Putin was planning something months ago and sat back going "don't panic". It was appeasement through and through, let's not take a stern response to Russia straight away, let's try our best not to **** him off as he goes around slapping us in the face. NATO membership should have been extended to Ukraine right after Crimea but it seems nobody learned the lesson.

Russia claims NATO is a threat to it's security and yet NATO existed precisely to stop Russia doing what it is doing right now. This is EXACTLY what it was created for. NATO was not a threat to Russia's security, it was a threat to Putin's ambitions. And wow did we just hand him what he wanted on a plate.

This isn't the end for Russian ambitions and be prepared to watch China threaten Taiwan next. If you're happy to watch dictatorships romp over democracies again then that's your choice.

I think this is the crux of the problem - the people directly involved in this aren't more intelligent, or if they are they are hiding it well.

This is Putin believing that his stick is bigger than Ukraine's so he will use it to get what he wants.

Sadly our ability to invent bigger, sharper sticks has evolved more quickly than the brains that are in control of them.

In Singapore the creme de la creme of brains and capability are identified at universities and earmarked to work in Government and one day become the leadership and run the country. Here we have corrupt entitled toffs from Eton running the show. The US isn't much better.
