A Political Thread pt. 2

Was always going to happen. You can't regulate the Internet properly when the people breaking the law aren't even in the country.

'Regulate internet properly'?

Thats a way of saying it. Do you also think anonymity online only leads to radical and harmful content?
The argument made against Reddit would 100% apply to TRF no?

Driving back from Devon and people are putting Union Flags up on the motorway bridges. Is this some reform rage bait crap I've not heard about?
It's a big thing around Birmingham. Hang flags up as a show of pride and get outraged when they are taken down.

I can kinda understand both sides in this. On the one hand I'm sure many of the people involved are doing it to provoke a reaction but on the other side, why should it? I can't think of another country where flying the flag immediately associates you with racists and nationalists. All nationalists drape themselves in the flag yet only we seen to have completely surrendered the flag to then and now seem ashamed of it.

Think it started out in South Birmingham and is spreading around the rest of the city (and apparently country), seen a ton of them on my drive to work the last few days

Yeah wasn't part of the argument in Brum is that they allowed Palestine flags for months without issue

That's definitely what they are going at, the outrage is largely around a perceived inequality in how they are treated. TBF, it's not entirely without merit. Apparently a leak from the council said they left the Palestinian flags because they fear reprisal or being portrayed as racist but don't have the same qualms about doing it for English flags.

These are issues where the left has completely lost the plot imo. It should be so easy to diffuse this but I'm betting they are going to balls the response up.

"Apparently a leak"

Yup same as "cancelling Christmas" will like likely be right wing BS people believe because they want it to true.

Why are Palestine flags out there? To show broad support the Palestinian people. Same reason Ukraine flags were all over the place.

Why are St. George/Union Flags out there? civic pride? sure they say that but reality it intimidation to remind people who's country it is.
My wifes told me some of the comments made by the general public when they fly the Pride flag outside the borough council offices.

I see plenty of Union Flags in town when they are actual civic events or dates (I've said it before I feel its sad because I like the battle banners). Nobody feels intimidated then.

Lets not pretend, we all know the people doing this are far right dickweeds.

Canada, Wales, Scotland flags everywhere when you visit. I don't think it's done for intimidation to remind people who's country it is.

The problem is getting people to move past the thinking of flying the flag is racist and more to thinking like the countries listed above.

Maybe it is but is flying your own nations flag inherently racist or nationalistic? It isn't in any other country so why should it be so here, regardless of who is doing it?

I think there's probably a sizeable chunk (not a majority) of people who put up Palestinian flags because they support Hamas as well. You probably don't have e many, if any, Star of David's flaying around Barnet or Golders Green.

I agree with your general point but it's not black and white imo.

regardless of who is doing it?
Thats the problem the "who and why" is inherently important to the flying.

If the local council puts them up in the lead up to remembrance day nobody bats an eyelid. The flags fly from our churches and civic centers year round. Again nobody cares.

A bunch of coked up racists well

And the thats the problem for the past two decades the only people flying the flag or marching with it are the arseholes.

(I say this as someone who froze his arse off in Trafalgar Square in 2003 draped in flag and England shirt to see the rugby team parade)

Looks like they are planning on not giving details, avoiding street bail and clogging up custody suites.

If the government shows Palestine Action are indeed a terrorist group does flying the Palestine flag make these people and others assholes as well.

If someone put an Israel flag on there house, there's a very real likelihood they'd get there windows put in.

Are the people involved directly with Palestine Action or those protesting its proscription as a terrorist group with a lack of information to why its been singled out separate from any other direct action group.

Ive been reading about this last night...

After the Birmingham story of removing SG cross flags, apparently because newer lampposts werent stable enough to hold flags, there was a bit of a backlash.

A few key videos went around after that, of a guy being stopped by police with a flag, and a council worker removing flags, while arguing with the cameraman on why he needs to have a flag of his country, while the worker was wearing a Jamaican flag hat.

Since then 'operation raise the colours' has started online, all over the UK.

For me, this is as harmless civil disobedience you can get, and I like it. Ill never understand why the pearl clutching about a nations flag causes people to set off on tirades, ive been all over the world and only really England and USA have this issue, seemingly as they are the biggest melting pots culturally. EdIT, forgot the Germans, they hate their flag!!!!

Nobody bats an eye at the Scottish, or the most beautiful and fearsome flag on the planet, so why shouldn't the English get to fly theirs?

Most arguments ive seen against it is from ideologues online, who call everything racist in general.

My kind of neighbour flies both a Wales and St George cross, and unbelievably respectfully he puts the Wales above, as its Welsh soil. More power to him!

This is just again, stupid mismanagement of a silly situation, that benefits reform!
