excessive booing

Well - 80,000 people singing a song over the performance of 22 guys I thought was actually pretty rude to be honest. The challenge isn't for the spectators - it's for the opposite players. If it was only the players on the field singing over then I agree it would be a good challenge - but to me it was just a bit obnoxious, like well done...you out shouted two dozen guys..

That in mind I hate all booing in games and New Zealand has gotten worse at it. Booing and whistling at conversion/penalty attempts especially bugs me. I generally felt not too bad for the whole Quade Cooper thing as I feel dirty play can earn boos, but now I tend to feel more judgmental at a crowd who boos at small incidents or 50/50 calls than I do towards players who make minor infractions. When the referee makes the correct decision and still gets boo'd is just one of my "shut up and learn the game" moments. Bringing lazer pointers to the game like in Argentina is another thing that makes me pretty mad.

Totally agreed. It's pretty hilarious rageranger would make a comment like "the AB's LOVED the fact that all of London responded to their haka". Really, they LOVED it ?!! ya wanna bet money they loved it ?...yeh...

anyways: one thing I like is in Aus/NZ, they boo drop goal attempts. Sure drops are part of the game, perfectly legal, respectable etc....but I've always liked that a whole crowd would be in unison like that and agree to boo a play because it's not fully attack-minded. They won't settle for anything else but try-scoring...love that mentality.
P.S.: please don't reply to this by telling me Dan Carter has taken drop goals before or wtvr, we all know that, just stick to my point and nothing outside it ;)

I love the booing whistiling shoutin & roaring in a game this is part and parcel of the game here. In the Top14 the noise level at some of the game is incredible and its fun. Thomond Park and that silence during kicks are just plain weird to my ears.
Best atmosphere I've experienced of all venues in Europe is Stade Marcel Michellin in Clermont. Phenomenal. And I don't even support Clermont here.

yeah well I dunno, remember how long it took the Top 14 crowds to stop booing Delon Armittage for his gesture on the game-winning try he scored to win the H Cup ?...I'm sure some still boo him, haven't followed up on that..
He explained in an interview how he had to explain to his kids why the people were booing him, and said how embarrassing it was for him and his wife...

And nobody questions the atmosphere of a stadium, just the booing specifically. And yeah I've got to go to Clermont one day for a match, I'm sure that whatever the time I pick they'll still be on that winning streak anyways, so I ain't in a hurry !

Do we really have to get into another Haka debate?

Is this the point where I (once again) bring up the fact that the first National Anthem (at the start of any international match in any sport) was sung in a response to the haka by Wales?

Whilst everyone agrees crowd noise is necessary for a good atmosphere, don't some find that the tendency for crowds to boo has gone too far and has actually reached a point of being rude and petty? Booing if someone does something dangerous or naughty is ok but booing when someone is taking a kick or just generally playing comes across very badly. As a spectator I find it actually ruins the feel of the game quite a bit.

What's the opinion of people here? Has booing become too much?

Completely overlooked this thread (it ties in with my own on lack of atmosphere). Your comment kinda sums up why I asked the question...clearly for you intense rivalry (which booing is one facet of) is not necessary. Me, well I'd boo the crap out of an opposing player when he's lining up a kick, when he's running with the ball, when he's coming out of the tunnel, and if he's doing a dance before the game even started I'd boo that bit more...it's not petty, its not rude, it's rivalry. I accept that this behaviour wouldn't be the norm in Rugby. The bonhomie kills the atmosphere that feeds intense rivalry, which it would appear is just how many like it.

This is one of the few things about union I can't get my head around.

Rugby League kickers aren't given a minute's peace - and I love that fact. And they very rarely miss too. I've heard a fantastic wall of noise as opposition players have stepped up for crucial kicks.

I was at Northampton vs Leicester 5 years ago or so (Northampton won) and you could hear a pin drop when a kick was taking place. Totally alien!

I'm baffled by it myself. It's like a day out, a picnic. You want to see your own team win right?...are you there to participate or observe? Me, I'm there to cheer on my team and boo everything the opposition does. In a way it's commendable (from a non sporting rivalry point of view) to see such etiquette in Rugby...but I can't get my head around it. I do appreciate though that for many this is how it should be, but that to me its where the sport misses out.
