Greats to play fund-raiser
By Robert Craddock and Robet Fidgeon

A WORLD XI with six Australian players will play an Asian XI likely to include Indian superstar Sachin Tendulkar at the MCG on January 10.

The match will be a fund-raising event for victims of the tsunami disaster and will be telecast live by Channel 9 which will hold a telethon in conjunction with the event.

The match, set to be officially announced at a press conference in Sydney this afternoon, is the result of a day of intense negotiations around the cricket world, including a meeting between Australian and International Cricket Council officials in Melbourne early yesterday.

It is expected six yet-to-be-named Australian players will join players from the West Indies and New Zealand in a World XI likely to include West Indies star Brian Lara.

The Asian XI will include Indian, Sri Lankan and Pakistani stars and, hopefully, be led by Tendulkar.

That Indian players play in the match was considered vital so television rights could be sold for a huge fee to the cricket-crazed nation where any game with Tendulkar is a mass rater.

As part of the deal to attract the Asian players there is likely to be a second game, probably in India in February.

Players from South Africa and England were unavailable due to the Test series in South Africa.

Pakistan and the West Indies will be in Australia for the VB one-day series.

The Federation of International Cricketers Association (FICA) chief executive Tim May handed Cricket Australia a proposal on Thursday on behalf of cricketers who volunteered to participate in the game.

The two bodies approached the ICC, who sanctioned the match.

In working together, May and Cricket Australia put aside differences negotiating Australian cricket's memorandum of understanding.

All money raised through gate takings from the match will go to World Vision. And Channel Nine CEO David Gyngell said the station would run a telethon in conjunction with the game.

"Personally, there has been nothing that has moved me more than this tragedy," he said.

Players from New Zealand and Sri Lanka are available for the match as Sri Lanka's tour of New Zealand was cancelled earlier this week to let the Sri Lankan players return home.

Their nation was one of the hardest hit by the tragedy, with more than 26,000 lives lost.

Possible Sides

Asian XI: Virender Sehwag (Ind), Sanath Jayasuria (SL), Marvan Atapattu (SL), Rahul Dravid (Ind), Sachin Tendulkar (Ind), VVS Laxmann (Ind), Kumar Sangakkara (SL), Chaminda Vass (SL), Shoaib Akhtar (Pak), Irfan Pathan (Ind), Anil Kumble (Ind), Yousuf Youhana (Pak) (12th)

World XI: Chris Gayle (WI), Matthew Hayden (Aus), Stephen Fleming (NZ), Brian Lara (WI), Ricky Ponting (Aus), Michael Clarke (Aus), Adam Gilchrist (Aus), Chris Cairns (NZ), Brett Lee (Aus), Glenn McGrath (Aus), Daniel Vettori (NZ), Ramnaresh Sarwan (WI) (12th)

This game sounds awesome and the possibility of a seond one, and the money going to the tsunami relief makes it worthwhile.

I think anything that can be done to raise money is a good thing and if there's some good cricket along the way, well that's a bonus. If something like this could sell out the MCG or even the SCG it'll certainly go some small way to helping a worthy cause.

Great idea by the cricket people this game should get a ton of cash from the cricket mad indians and a packed out MCG. It should go some way to helping those countries out.

What jersey will they wear on such short notice?
They'll get something, maybe a mix of colours, maybe whites, maybe country

nah, thats the squad not the 'lineup'

hmmm it not that great for a nz cricket fan, we get 3 players, we have no cricket until february and aus have a big odi series coming up... yet we get 3. Understandable though to get the crowds for the money needed. Anyhow i hope they show it live on TV here because it's boring without any cricket, or SPORT for that matter!

edit: Both matches will be broadcast live around the cricketing world with all proceeds going to World Vision. Organisers are hoping to raise millions of dollars for the relief effort.

Gilchrist will (should) open, Fleming at 3.

Maybe a bit short on pace bowlers, should of chucked lee in instead of Gough

It'd be a laugh if Lee ended up at 12th man again.

I was thinking like it was a Test match. Edited version:
1. Hayden
2. Gilchrist
3. Fleming
4. Ponting
5. Lara

here is the asian squad very powerful team.

Asia - Saurav Ganguly (India, captain), Sachin Tendulkar (India), Virender Sehwag (India), Rahul Dravid (India), Anil Kumble (India), Sanath Jayasuriya (Sri Lanka), Marvan Atapattu (Sri Lanka), Chaminda Vaas (Sri Lanka), Kumar Sangakara (Sri Lanka), Muttiah Muralitharan (Sri Lanka), Shoaib Akhtar (Pakistan), Yousuf Youhana (Pakistan), Zaheer Khan (Pakistan), Alok Kapali (Bangladesh).

That's a good team, better than I expected actually. It will be an interesting game if everyone plays with a bit of form.
