Round 16 Sale Sharks took a bite out of the Cherry and Whites on Friday with a 22-16 win over Gloucester at Edgeley Park. Charlie Hodgson was on sparkling form kicking four penalties out of five, landing a stunning drop goal and converting a try he orchestrated for Ben Foden in the 54th minute. The win ensures Sale dig their heels into fourth place in the Guinness Premiership table, with Gloucester still holding on at the top.
On Saturday it was a day of record-breaking at Welford Road. Leicester Tigers' fly-half Andy Goode became the highest scorer in Guinness Premiership history in his side's comfortable 36-23 win at Welford Road over Saracens. Saracens' back-rower Kris Chesney also put his name in the history books as he made his 194th Premiership appearance, taking him above Simon Shaw and Neal Hatley on the list of record appearance makers. Leicester Tigers sit comfortably in second position in the table with Saracens in sixth.
On Sunday another record was broken when a crowd of 23,700, the largest ever for a Premiership match, watched London Irish take on London Wasps at the Madejski Stadium. Dave Walder ensured Wasps did not miss Danny Cipriani by producing a match-winning goal-kicking performance at fly-half. It was also Walder's outstanding defence-splitting run which created the 47th minute try for centre Riki Flutey ensuring victory against the club Flutey left last summer. Final score London Irish 16, London Wasps 22 with the two clubs sitting close together at eighth and seventh in the Guinness Premiership table respectively.
Two weekends after beating Guinness Premiership leaders Gloucester, Harlequins stopped Bath going top with a superb win at the Twickenham Stoop. The visitors needed a bonus point victory to go above Leicester and Gloucester, but the only compensation as they left The Stoop was the losing point secured with the last move of the match and the fact they still have a game in hand on both the clubs above them. Harlequins used the windy weather much better than Bath and were rewarded with a final score of Harlequins 22, Bath 16. Harlequins are now back up to fifth in the table keeping their play-off dreams alive, with Bath in third.
The Worcester Warriors versus Leeds Carnegie clash on Sunday was expected to be the relegation decider but it wasn't to be, ending in a 10-10 draw at Sixways. After victories against Sale Sharks and Leicester Tigers in the last fortnight, Worcester were favourites to walk away with a win but Leeds were not ready to give up the survival fight easily. Leeds remain at the foot of the table with Worcester in eleventh place.
It had been a week of turmoil for Newcastle Falcons with Director of Rugby John Fletcher leaving midweek, and it ended on Sunday in a 8-28 home defeat to Bristol. It took Bristol 90 seconds to open the scoring with a Scott Linklater try converted by Ed Barnes. Shaun Perry caused Newcastle all sorts of problems and the pressure was too much for the Falcons who remain in tenth place in the table, next to Bristol Rugby in ninth.
