Nevin Spence RIP

Terrible news, truly.

Never saw him play, but so sad to see somebody with such potential, die so young. Can't even imagine what his mother is going through right now.

R.I.P mate

Apparently he waded in after his father got into some trouble absolutely tragic. An emergency worker is being treated in hospital after been one og them who dived in to try and save them.

Your right dullonien. Apparently the dog jumped in, the dad went to try and save it... then the two sons and daughter tried to save their dad.

Awful. Absolutely awful. God help the family.

Damn, I know how horrible it is when an animal accidentally ends up in the slurry pit. We've had a dog and a couple of cows in ours over the years. A pity the dad attempted to save the dog by jumping in himself, especially without a rope. We always rescued animals by using the back bucket of the JCB, climbing to the end and tying some rope around the animal. Unfortunately a slurry pit is very much like quick sand, very difficult to get back out after going in, and the quicker you struggle the more you're sucked under.

Dangerous things, one of many on a farm. Ours is fenced off (we used to rent a caravan on the farm years ago, and had to for health and safety), but that's not always the case. It wouldn't be unreasonable to force all farms to have some sort of safety feature next to sunken slurry pits (many newer ones are in large tanks above the ground), even if it was just a long pole or something similar.

I know how easily health and safety can be overlooked though. For years my dad's been running a JCB with no brakes whatsoever. We finally looked at it recently, and got one of the back brakes working (there's only two, one on each back wheel), but the brake lines were shot on the other side. This was obviously far from safe, and I'm sure there's plenty of situations which could have ended up in an accident, but when money is extremely tight, things like this tend to get overlooked. I wouldn't be surprised if fixing the remaining brake on the JCB would cost close to £500 (needs a new brake line, and all new braking plates, there's 6 of them).

We are able to keep ours all internal directly under the slats inside houses. The layout just lended itself to it when re-doing the houses a decade or so back. I know many folks that simply don't have that option and a full rebuild is far too costly.

Luckily for us its just so much safer. [But of course you have to be very careful stirring it for taking it out.]

I just heard this on Fox - it makes me sick inside. For rugby to lose Nevin is one thing, but for this family to lose three loved ones all at once is just tragic. My heart goes out to the family, their friends, and all who knew and loved them. So, so sad.

Tragic news, devastated for his family and just hope his sister pulls through. I know what it feels like to lose someone to accidents on a farm, cannot imagine what it'd be like to lose 3 at once, horrible for the family and my thoughts go out to them.
Always rated Nevin as well, thought he would be one of front runners to fill the gaps in the Ireland centres when the old guard retire, just gutted that his promising career and a whoel promising young life has been cut so tragically short

RIP Nevin, Noel and Graham Spence

Ulster's match is postponed this week as they make funeral preparations. All Pro 12 games will have a minutes silence as a mark of respect.

Looking round the net, seems that many places are planning to finish that minute with a round of SUFTUM in tribute. Seems fitting, and I don't know about others, but it's easier to bear as a member of the entire rugby community than as just an Ulster fan.

Ballynahinch rugby club are all mucking in as well to keep the farm going. Makes the heart soar in a way this whole mess has made it fall.
