Finally, the Aussies are about to win, not before Goughie smacks McGrath about a bit more.

Lee + McGrath did the damage early on with top class bowling.
Did we win one did we

What happened to England? after all these other losses I'd have thought our boys were destined to go down again.

HOW WE CANED THE AUSSIES IN 1987

ENGLAND'S last Ashes success was 16 years ago, when Mike Gatting's side retained the famous urn with a 2-1 victory Down Under in 1986-87.
Opener Chris Broad led the way with three tons, finishing with an average of 69 in the series, while Kent seamer Graham Dilley and Middlesex spinner John Emburey led the wicket-takers.

FIRST TEST

Venue: Brisbane
Result: England won by seven wkts
Series Score: Australia 0 England 1

ENGLAND went into the series after a string of wretched performances in tour matches and had been famously written off by one pundit as 'can't bat, can't bowl, can't field'.

But seven batsmen reached 40 as they piled up a massive first innings score of 456, with Ian Botham proving the Aussies' chief tormentor by scoring 138.

Dilley claimed the first five of his 16 series victims as England forced the follow-on. Off-spinner Emburey, with 18 series wickets, did the second-innings damage.

England 456 (Botham 138) and 77-3
Australia 248 (Dilley 5-68) and 282 (Marsh 110, Emburey 5-80).

SECOND TEST

Venue: Perth
Result: Match Drawn
Series Score: Australia 0 England 1
OPENERS Broad and Bill Athey gave England control with a massive opening stand of 223 on day one.

Broad, David Gower and then wicketkeeper Jack Richards all notched centuries as England set a huge target. But the Aussies succeeded in holding on to bat out for a draw.

Skipper Allan Border led the rearguard action and a young slip of a lad named Steve Waugh made a vital 71 to deny England the chance to go two-up.

England 592-8 dec (Broad 162, Gower 136, Richards 133) and 199-8 dec
Australia 401 (Border 125) & 197-4.

AUSSIE BASHER ... Broad's run of tons put England in charge in 86/7

THIRD TEST

Venue: Adelaide
Result: Match Drawn
Series Score: Australia 0 England 1
ON a perfect batting pitch, five Aussie batsmen made 70 or more - David Boon reached a hundred - to set up a declaration.

But Broad scored his second successive ton and another from skipper Gatting ensured that England avoided the follow-on and managed to retain their lead in the series.

Australia: 514-5 dec (Boon 103) and 201-3 dec (Border 100no)
England: 455 (Broad 116, Gatting 100) and 39-2.

FOURTH TEST

Venue: Melbourne
Result: England won by an innings and 14 runs
Series Score: Australia 0 England 2

BOTHAM returned after missing the Third Test through injury and teamed up with Gladstone Small, a late replacement for Dilley, to skittle out the Aussies and set up an Ashes-clinching victory at the MCG.

Broad plundered his third century in a row and the Aussies were spun out second time around by Emburey and Phil Edmonds.

Australia: 141 (Small 5-48, Botham 5-41) and 194
England: 349 (Broad 112)

FIFTH TEST

Venue: Sydney
Result: Australia won by 55 runs
Series Score: Australia 1 England 2
THE New Year Test finally gave the Aussies something to smile about as they grabbed a consolation victory.

Dean Jones scored more than half of Australia's first innings total - Small again taking five wickets - and spinners Peter Sleep and Peter Taylor wrapped up victory on the final day as the last six wickets fell for 41.

Australia: 343 (Jones 184, Small 5-75) and 251
England: 275 (Taylor 6-78) and 264 (Sleep 5-72).[/b]

It just gives me a laugh at how far back they have to go to give us cheek

Lucky for England the game was rained out. All in all a pretty entertaining match. It was the closest I've ever seen to a cricket fight. Not that it would have been much of a contest if Hayden had decided to snog Jones one. The English bowler well and truely dropped his nuts. Hilarious.

P.S. Those two English commentators may just be the worst in the history of any sport.

Which ones?

I don't have that great a problem with Ian, as he's alright when he's not with the other guy who sounds like a gardner. The one who said, 'he's a big lad, tell him to suck it up and get on with it'. Or something along those lines.

I didn't hear the commentary, so that doesn't help much. Wasn't Geoffrey Boycott was it? Sounds like the sort of thing he'd come out with.

Great final, Geraint Jones rescued it with a 71, got down to Ashley Giles needing 3 off the last ball from McGrath, only managed 2, and the trophy is shared. Bring on the Ashes

Well there is the matter of the Natwest Challenge, could be very interesting with all these substitutions and more field restrictions.

1st of 3 matches in the Natwest challenge was won today by England, by a cool 9 wickets!

They (the most barmiest of armies) sing: "are you Scotland in disguise?"

How did that happen? I thought England was going to get carved up on that dodgey pitch.

A few years ago England probably would, but the current team is packed with class players. I personally cannot wait for the ashes to start, could be the closest seen for a long time.

Scotland have a team which plays in the English domestic one-day league. And they are really poor. They get outclassed by virtually everyone they play.

It's something we sing at any sports match, mainly football and cricket when we are winning, coz Scotland are shite at everything.
