That number is simply the total minutes played by each player divided by 80 - not the number of individual games a player has played in.
It's only used to work out the average per game stats.
Yeah, I know. It's even better than number of games played, because it is standardised.

It's just 20 defenders beaten in 5 "games" (whether this is 5 full appearances, or 10 half-appearances, or otherwise) is a bit easier to work with than 20 defenders beaten in 400 minutes, if you see what I mean.
 
Thanks for clearing that up Rats, I was under the impression it didn't include knock ons or similar, only having the ball ripped in a maul or ruck.

While turnovers conceded might be indicative of a poor team overall rather than a poor player, I'd still back the best players to make good decisions and not become isolated in the first place, carry upright into tight forwards, etc.
