Really an upgrade on Wallace or Clifford though? TBH I would be surprised if we signed anyone else now
Well a fit clifford no, buttttt when was the last time that happened.
I reckon he is a upgrade on Wallace, although Wallace might be down to the whole team stinking up the place.

With Willis out for a season and Thompson and Haskell gone, Wasps could do with a back rower.

Good point.

Even with Carr coming in Wasps look short.

Haskell has gone in part because of Willis and Shields, it's only Willis that needs to be accounted for.

They're supposed to be getting Carr.
Next season they’ll have Young, Hughes, Shields, Rieder, Tom Willis and maybe Carr... when you factor in that Hughes and Shields are likely to be away on international duty and Tom Willis very fresh that is a seriously thin back row stock.

IMO, Wallace's breakdown work has been one of the only positive things in a few games this year. Also, its probs best leaving a 28 year old signing be and working on Archie White

For me White hasn't looked anything special in the games I have seen TBH, even in terms of potential.

I agree. He works hard but I’ve watched him to try to see what the coaching team is seeing and I don’t get it. He doesn’t stand out in any way, he’s just there ... I’m a little surprised we’ve retained him TBH.

IMO Quins do need a 7 but I’d be aiming higher than Rowan. He is a useful signing for someone but I don’t think he’s an improvement on Wallace. I’d take John Hardie though.

Maybe, but with the economic state of the Prem right now, I don't see a huge amount to gain in splurging on a player who is nearing the end of their prime

Exeter, Sarries, Wasps all shown the benefits of getting the right player at that age in.
This isn't international level it's prem level and a player can easily still perform at their top level especially in the forwards whilst in their 30's.

True, but if you look at that quins back row, we are gonna have to get more young players in at some point soon... We can maintain for a couple more years but we are gonna need to strengthen youth long term...

First Choice - Robshaw (31) Luamanu (29) Clifford (25)

Second Choice - Chisholm (22) Bothma (28) Wallace (27)

Most are late 20s... not exactly building for the future

Like any signing, it's a balancing act between price, the need at the club making the signing and their assessment of how well the player in question will fit / perform. I suspect that part of what creates the opportunity here is the player in question's current club reassessing their value based on the number of miles on the clock, meaning that they're much more likely to look elsewhere (obviously Rowan has no choice). Aside from the money, which I have no clue about, Rob Baxter seems to have a particularly good eye for players in this category, Waldrom, Parling and Salvi are all particularly good examples.

It's all very well to say that Quins need to look to the future and recruit a younger player, but players in this category who can be relied upon to slot in and do a job are fewer and further between and accordingly with be in greater demand and priced accordingly, so available cash / cap room becomes a factor and the risk is greater.
