USA news & politics

Not going to shed any tears over Maduro by all accounts the guy is a thug and a crook. You have have the most recent Nobel peace prize winner waiting in the wings to take over. Still this isnt the way to go about it, the west has a terrible record on regime change

Some saying attention will turn to Mexico next ref drugs but not sure even Trumps that stupid.

Ahhh I’ve seen trump mention something along the lines of controlling the oil….

Predictable

Tl:dr, The US' recent gains in oil production via fracking are inadequate due to the type of oil that it produces and what the refineries along the Gulf of Mexico are equipped to process. Venezuela has the sticky stuff so he wants to steal it. Because he's a ******* thief.

Trump saying the not so quiet bits completely openly, that American oil companies are going to go in and exploit the oil resources and that the USA plans to run Venezuela until a "proper transition" takes place.

Everyone knew it had nothing to do with drugs or Maduro's legitimacy. This is only going to end badly.

This fucker is meandering all over the place, he's now ranting about domestic stuff and spewing absolute crap. Anyone who thinks his brain is functioning is as delusional as he is. He is mentally incapable of sticking to a single train of thought. For all the talk about Biden's dementia, he never did this.

THe US recognises Urrutia as the winner of the last election, with Machado leader of the opposition.

The power in vnezuela hasbt changed though, Maduro loyalists will give up nothing without force, and will just promote from within. Urrutia and Machado will stay in exile...

Unless therr has been a plan, abd plotting behind the scenes, the Venezurlan public seem to be taking this abduction? Capture? Well, there is a hunger for regime change from within.

I like the way people are talking about oil like its a secret noone noticed, oil is the key to the lock, but the lock isnt oil, its Russian and Chinese influence in the Americas, and the amount of investment and infrastructure plowed in by them.

I dont know how badly the US need the oil, but i know how badly they dont want Russia and China to get exclusive rights to it after they bury the venezuelan government in debt!

This may well become a global destabilising, or global stabilising move from Trump, i think we all agree Russian threat to europe would significantly increase if they managed to secure vast quantities of Venezuelan assets?

Europe needs to arm up very quickly.

Macron isn't the most liked guy anywhere but he's been proven right on global politics time and time again, need to unite around his ideas.
Macron is a prick. And I doubt Europe will ever be united to "arm up quickly", rather some European countries can make a union (at least)

I don't think it works like that. "Now we've removed Person A, the hundreds and thousands of people who were just working for them will take on Person B we like as their head of state!".

Macron said in 2016 that Europe needed to prepare themselves militarily or pressure would quickly come from east and West. He was dead right. The attack on Venezuela galvanises China and Russia which has a direct affect on Europe.

Nearly every country in Europe (and the UK) is already reliant on a neighbour to defend some aspect of their nation whether its air space, fishing, even borders. France the closest to being self sustaining but have very little power in terms of intelligence and rely on others.

Prick yes, but just about the strongest major European politician in decades and recognised how weak Europe was and spoke about it before anyone else realised there was any threat.

Yeah I think that's what Machado said or hoped. Going by Trumps press conference she's got no chance anyway. Machado won't be amused.

Threat always was, always is and will be in the future, regardless who's the current enemy, you shouldn't be genius to understand it. Sorry mate, but your phrase "Europe needs to arm up very quickly" sounds too naive and not realistic, imo of course

Semantics and a dislike for Macron beyond being able to give him any credit. Ok 👍

Seriously though, I was making comments about how Europe has completely abandoned any ability to apply "hard power" way back when I was at uni in 2010. Macron may have been saying this but he did sweet FA in France about it that I'm aware of. It didn't take a genius to see that Europe had very little force projection for the size of their economy, and even less actual political will to apply what they did have.

Europe is ultimately constrained by WW2 and is basically overly-pacifist and scared of using force.

Italy, Spain and Germany were not making much of an effort on defence and I agree France did little to change that.

I'm not confident even it there was a breach and Nato was needed. I doubt all members would get involved let alone rely on a united Europe. Who are also now heavily reliant on the UK/France military and nuclear deterrent.

We can't rely on America but I don't think they are the only ones on the list.

He was constrained by both his own government and the EU / Merkel, couldn't do much more than what you could in Uni with that pushback and only assuming office in 2017. France were also dwarfed by Germany at the time too which is no longer the case (a bit of a meet in the middle situation there though). He's still managed to massively increase military spending and output domestically too with solid plans to do more in the next 12 months. He can't force those around him to do anything, they were happy to rely on big brother America holding up NATO and that's what backfired more than anything Macron didn't / couldn't do.

He's an interesting character in any case, not liked domestically for not doing things the French way and not liked globally for being too French.
