This is pretty standard in general in places like Italy. It makes particular sense if there are grounds for suspecting the government of the day may start go erode media freedoms and the rule of law. I'm not sure the Tories are quite in that category yet, so it may be difficult to sell to voters. Particularly for Labour since they think the current voting system is spiffing (in which case why have an electoral pact from an ethical point of view?).

Not to mention that it's money "earned" on her private property, that the government manages on her behalf.
If I had a second house (I wish), and rented it out through an agent, then claiming the sovereign grant is "taxpayer's money" would be like claiming that rent is the agent's money, they're giving me as a gift.
The queen owns lots and lots pf properties, all over the country (and outside). She gets rents and earnings directly from the Duchey of Lancaster; the rest is as above (managed by the government, and handed over to her)

IIRC though, the taxpayer does top it up if the money earned on the royal estates decreases year on year - so this year specifically, there may have been an input from the taxpayer.


Having said all that - I'd be all in favour of shrinking the royal family to a more nuclear family; and mostly in favour of getting rid altogether.

I wish they would abolish Eton and the House of Lords while they're at it.

Sorry but by that argument anyone who is paid by the government doesn't have their own private income...

So what work does she do to earn it again?

Is she tending patients in hospitals?
Or teaching kids in schools?
What about pursuing criminals?

It may be but the fact remains that it is still technically private money rather than public. The fact someone is paid by the government does not mean it remains public money.

The government do not pay got anything with private money. They pay for everything with public money.

Or I suppose borrowed money - which is possibly private investors, but its borrowed against future repayment from public money.

You can technically all you want after the payment is made - if the Mod pay BAe for a submarine, they pay with public money that is then private money after BAe receive it.

Yes it's public whilst the government control it. As soon as it has been transferred from the government, it is no longer public money. The queen may be head of state but the royals are not part of the government. The crown estates own the properties etc and are actually a private company. You then have the private estates of the royals, which are again a separate thing.

Yes I can technically all I want because it so happens to be correct. The fact you don't like it doesn't change that. The Queen and the royals do have private wealth separate to both the crown estates and the government. The fact you clearly don't like it is irrelevant.

Many of the flights will be intercontinental and took off late on yesterday or just after midnight before the second red warning affecting London. They get three attempts to land and after that they have to divert. Conditions will get much worse in an hour or two from now.
