Is this my quote? You'll have to refresh my memory on context...

He 100% meant what he said, "im going to get into a lot of trouble for this but I couldn't care less,"

Every person seeing that understands what he meant, unless they willingly want it to mean otherwise, or arent smart enough to understand why every outlet reporting it deletes the first part of the sentence, which are you?
I'm neither, I'm holding Trump to a standard I expect of politicians. If any Irish leader made a similar gaff I'd say exactly the same thing.

As I said before, it's at best a massive blunder in speech at best, compounded by what followed. Any other premier would face far more of a backlash.

Anyway, happy to agree to disagree here, you can think whatever you want of me.

That answer will vary depending on which Trump voters you speak to, I'd imagine.

For hardcore MAGA they would outright deny, or disagree with the "stupid" and "nasty" things he's done. Palm some of it off as banter or just his style/4D chess etc etc.

Others will acknowledge the more distasteful side of Trump but will put things like the economy or immigration above these things. I'm sure there's even many who even recognise Jan 6th as at least a dark day for America, albeit falling short of thinking it was an insurrection/coup.

Many other middle of the road voters might've been swayed to voting Trump based on my boy Joes perceived lack of mental awareness.

There's probably many other reasons as well. Including even your main thing that some middle of the road people (which there aren't that many of by the way) were sick of being called a racist online or something and decided to vote for Trump.

I agree, the hardcore idiots are there, and im sure they would want a 3rd term.

But bases dont win elections, they set the platform for it certainly, but those pesky swing voters are what tip the scales...

There were other reasons for 2024 certainly, but my overall point was the steady and obvious increase in his popularity over a decade, my argument is predicted on the Democrats losing voters, not Trump winning them over.

The amount of brits who are coming around, and then looking at Farage as a realistic option is scary, I can honestly see Labour not lasting the term, Reform taking some power, radical social change, mass deportations etc...

And it will largely be down to a lack of common sense, honesty, and integrity of those who oppose them

To be honest, im absolutely holding Trump to the standard of other premiers, the same way I defended Biden when he misspoke, or more appropriately was mi quoted and taken out of context on purpose for malicious reasons.

As I mentioned before, Biden claimed the population would need F15s to fight his government, and it was reported like he was threatening war with civilians, which was ludicrously dishonest.

I think what your doing is holding him to the standard of politicians you hate, as you wouldn't infer malicious intent from such an obvious statement, or you wouldnt entertain people who cut and pasted only parts of the answer for their own purposes, with politicians you either liked or were neutral about. You would call that out on theirnbehalf rightly so.

But here's a bit of a qualifier, what times have you defended Trump against lies or attacks against him unfairly?

I think if it wasn’t for Covid Trump would’ve probably won in 2020, to be honest. He handled it so badly, or the perception of it by swing voters was so bad, that he lost. He won in 2024 because of the war in Ukraine, not coz of the war itself, but because of inflation/cost of living and Trump saying he’d sort it all out.

That’s a bit crude and there’s other reasons as I’ve said, but that’s the general gist of what I feel.

Oh FFS. You are trolling me now. 🤣

Fair play. It’s a good one.

I get it, id disagree re covid, operation warp speed polled really well, and so it should have, not that i think any democrat wouldnt have done the same, id make the case the Dem leaders STFU, hid Biden in the basement and let Trump hang himself...

The problem is they came out fighting to stop him from being able to run again, and they totally mismanaged Jan 6th, not to mention ousting Biden without a primary etc...

But the trend in popularity is what im referring to, Trump steadily increased his numbers, if it wasnt for a record, and unprecedented spike in voting numbers on behalf of Biden (80 million most popular president of all time lol) Trumps trend would have been 2 from 2, and tbh that probably would have been better for everyone, you could argue Trump winning 2020 would have been better for the world than this 2nd term, where he could arguably do irreparable damage.

EDIT: I would add, part of the problem Democrats has, is that Trump is a goldmine for clicks, views and monetary gain. CNN absolutely needed Trump to run and probably win again.

I think i read something that CNN saw a 36% decline in viewership when Trump wasnt in office, and imagine that happened to all the anti Trump outlets. No wonder they manufactured contraversy constantly, to try to cover the shortfall.

I criticised Biden too, he was so far gone last year that he had to go and I said as much.

You're looking way too deep into this and being incredibly lenient on the oration skills of politicians in my opinion.

Compare Biden, Trump and Harris to Obama, Clinton, even Bush or John McCain and they're embarrassing speakers. I don't discuss Irish politics here because I'd be talking to myself but our current and former Taoiseachs are bumbling idiots and it frustrates me so much despite them both being in parties I'd prefer in gov to the current alternative (ironically considering this conversation, the centre-right parties over the left).

I agree that current media is trash and fanning flames but I watched that clip without reading anything surrounding it, it is my genuine interpretation of his words given what followed.

Maybe I'm living in the past wanting politicians being proper speakers promoting their own ideas and actions and critiquing the oppositions but the world was a far more balanced and safe place when that was the norm.

100% agree, Biden was gone, Harris seemed drunk and shrill, Trump has a unique idiocy in his style. I miss the days where politicians would actually shake hands and share warm greetings, and acted like adults, and we didnt know how corrupt everyone of them were lol.

BTW met Bertie in 2008 when he was still Taoiseach, what a boy, loved a pint lol. I was also living in Dublin at the time, and was incredulous when the Lisbon treaty was rejected, only for it to be republished for another vote. I genuinely could not believe it, locals were just like 'ah well, they'll only keep making us bleedin vote until they get what they want so' i was stunned, and at that point Irish politics wasnt for me lol

Why do you think then in 2020 Trump became only the 4th incumbent president in history to lose a second election and why was he the first president in history to lose back to back popular votes?

That referendum was a mess, absolutely hijacked by Declan Ganley with American and potentially Russian backers. The spread of misinformation was insane.

There now has to be an equal quota on everything from media time to posters on lamp posts on either side of a referendum campaign.

Turkeys voting for Christmas too aside from that haha.

Mail in / early voting essentially. Massive turnout favoured Democrats, made Biden the most popular president of all time, and that number will probably remain for a few more cycles yet...

Still amazes me 81 million people lol. Ifni remember correctly, it was the highest turnout US election ever? They usually average 56% turnout and 85% registered voter turnout...

2020 saw 66% turnout and 95% registered voter turnout.

Numbers off the top of my head, dont quote me. My point is, some democrat counties saw a 103% voter turnout, some cemeteries even managed a high turnout, and counters didnt block the windows well enough 😉

So Trump didn’t really lose 2020. Got it.

I was incredulous, but I couldn't complain...

Rocked up to the government office, a few years before, was given a PPS number and a dole cheque within the hour. I went home in absolute shock lol.

I was only waiting for a job to start up west, and the lady behind the desk was shooshing me and told me it was hard enough for everyone hahahaha

The first and only person to be able to shoosh you in history. That lady deserves a TRF award at the end of the year ;)

This might be a decent microcosm of this entire issue in one video...

Dave Rubin ambushes Cenk Uyger by using his demonising titles against Charlie Kirk against him, a time when he celebrated an antifa attack on him, and then goes on to use Cenks titles calling Trump a Nazi...

Cenk Uyger reacts by telling him to shut up, calling him disgusting, and a monster...

Now in boths defence, Rubin must be emotionally charged, and Cenk must have heard Rubin read these titles and see his career flash before his eyes, but both looked like a pair of arseholes, and despite Cenk responding exactly how Rubin intended, I dont think he proved what he was aiming to!
