Mamdani responded in a campaign email Monday evening, writing: "Congratulations, Andrew Cuomo. I know how hard you worked for this."

He framed the endorsement as part of a broader effort by wealthy interests to "buy our city," casting the election as a choice between "democracy and oligarchy."

Kudos to my fellow Californians who are doing their part to fight Trump and the far right agenda. Proposition 50 will win easily here today! Normally I'm against redistricting, but Trump and Texas gave us no other choice. Take a stand against the tyrant and his MAGA cult or get trampled over. ✊ It's spread nationwide and there are several states involved now.

Overdue socialism coming to the beautiful city of New York 👨‍🎤
Zohran Mamdani, a democratic socialist and state assemblymember whose charisma and relentless focus on affordability fueled a grassroots movement that forged a new Democratic coalition, was elected Tuesday as New York City's 111th mayor.

He isnt a socialist lol.

He has come from nowhere, managed a partially grass roots campaign (with sime help from Californian and Washington Billionaires), and managed to beat out the incumbant Adams and Cuomo not just at the primaries but in the election too lol.

I cant remember who made the point here, but wenhave truly entered an era of radical protest politics, those who offer the most radical change seem to be getting the benefit of the doubt, whether Mamdani can deliver on his offerings of free travel, cheap food, lower rent etc remains to be seen, but good luck to him.

He has you on ignore so I wouldn’t bother replying directly to him.

I actually agree with every word of this.

Surprised Cuomo actually got that many votes seeing as he's an absolute ghoul and didn't offer a shred of campaigning other than "Zohran will do 9/11....two!"

It's going to be very interesting to see how much Mamdani actually can get done
Will be like last 6 years of Obama establishment stich up.

He's obviously not a communist or a Marxist like TACO and other Republicans are saying but are his politics that different from some centre left EU Governments? Smaller scale but Estonians enjoy free public transport (buses and trams) in Tallinn and a relatively low cost of living for example.

Based on the few interviews I have seen the guy has real charisma, energy and seems as sharp as a tack. I'm sure he'll get a lot of dirt thrown his way (from both Trump and maybe even some Democrat elites who really need to GTFO) and so it'll be interesting to see how he deals with it.

It was essentially ehich Democrat did you want, Incumbant contraversial Democrat, Establishment crony Democrat, or outsider promising you what he cant deliver...

I know who id vote for, and i think any Republicans left in New York would have voted for Cuomo, he was the stayus quo outside of the status quo candidate lol.

He posesses a threat to the capitalistic nature of Washington from both sides, which means hes going to be blasted by Republicans and Democrats alike, Dems started distancing themselves early on, after someone called him the future of the Democratic party.

What the west needs is a blue print, of how to legitimately lower living costs, without strangulation of the middle class, or scaring off the businessmen, and to provide a living standard on the scale of a city like New York.

ID like to see Mamdani given the chance to have a real go!

I largely agree with this but I'm interested to hear what you mean when you say

"He posesses a threat to the capitalistic nature of Washington from both sides,"

Like you I don't regard him as a socialist as essentially he's a capitalist who operates within the capitalist system

Edit, my bad, I see what you mean now, essentially getting it from both sides who are capitalists.

He seems like an anti establishment socialist to me. A disruptor - like Trump but on the other side of the spectrum and with greater emphasis on serving the people rather than serving the billionaires. The Democratic party needs a massive shake up and he could be the one to get the ball rolling.

Born in Uganda he can't ever run for President but that might allow him to be more frank about things (particularly Trump's authoritarianism) without worrying about upsetting blocks of voters across the country.

I agree with the anti establishment bit but that's the bit I'd like to see cast aside. We've seen the damage done from the likes of Fararge over here and Trump in the states. We need politicians (preferably left leaning ones) bigging up our institutions but recognising their flaws and where we need to improve. Hopefully he is that guy but I don't think the socialist tag will help him and, imo, it's a stupid own goal because he's not a socialist.

Now the campaign is over (where he was asked questions about a wide range of domestic and international issues) his main focus as mayor, you would think, will be on NYC and it's residents. The affordability agenda seemed to strike a chord with many - him identifying as a Democratic Socialist may also be his way of responding to Trump's communist tag and to distance himself from certain other elite Dem politicians who so many people are disillusioned with.

It'll be interesting to see how he handles the Trump curveballs. He sounded pretty defiant in his victory speech and he seems to be a very good communicator.

He wont take the communist tag seriously, the same way Nazi isnt taken seriously, theyre just hyperbolic extensions of positions.

It will be interesting to see if Trump and the Republicans follow through on their threats to essentially attempt to block him getting into office / cutting funding to New York, both illegally.

Did Trump say hed illegally block funds, i only saw where he said he would only send the minimum required. Doesnt sound illegal.

How would they illegally block him from office?

He and engaged voters may not but many disengaged fuckwits will buy it in the same way some people here believe that London is now operating under Sharia law.
