Antisocial, societal issues thread

I don't agree. With stuff like politics then fair enough but sports people definitely don't put themselves out there to be abused. It's one thing having a hostile away game but getting a constant barrage of abuse personally at all times is not acceptable.

There's already been a drastic drop in the number of people who want to be referees due to the extreme levels of abuse. Do we want to say we let a short die because we were all a bunch of ***** who couldn't treat people like people?

Most people go into sport to follow a dream and turn a hobby into a reality. This abuse is seeping in at lower levels too. If we normalise it at higher levels, why not at lower levels? Why not allow the abuse of 16 and 18 year olds by supposedly grown adults?

How does one receive constant personal abuse at all times?

Also why do you differ between football and politics? I mean Southgate helped insert politics into football, and even sabotaged a major final in the attempt to prove a political point. Do you believe Southgate has entered the politics realm and therefore is fair game?

Got to agree... live by the sword, make millions and build a brand, don't cry when the sword calls you a dick once in a while.

Realistically, the only way to stop abuse is to close social media, or at least make a start by closing it in Russia, China and India, the 3 countries identified as the most abusive and racist online in the context of European football
Wayne Barnes is a millionaire through controversial refereeing decisions while building a ... uhh...brand? I'm sure he'll be pleased to hear that in chambers tomorrow morning.

Your missus really should confiscate your phone when you've had a few.

Can you try this one again in English please?

You can find his professional email address in about 3 seconds.

And this email wakes him up in his bed? Taps him on the shoulder to let him know he sucks?

Trust me when I tell you there are lots of professions that give professional email addresses and phone numbers to the public, and most of those professions are primed for abuse. Consider police officers and prison guards.

There is plenty of training about dealing with boundaries and safeguarding yourself when working in a highly chaotic front facing role.

If you choose to put yourself out in the public arena, you have to be prepared to take the consequences, not just when it suits you

Btw, I don't remotely condone the online behaviour, unless it's English refs 😎😎

I hope neither of you are ever on the jury of a rape trial.

You do understand the concept of victim blaming right? Honestly, why the **** do people think it is in anyway justifiable to send personal abuse to people in any context?

That's right, calling Harry Kane a dick on twitter is just like rape, it's literally exactly the same...

Jesus christ I don't expect genius, but at least a touch of intellectual integrity!

But let me give you the largest benefit of the doubt, that this effort of reductio ad absurdum was made out of either jest or misjudgement, and that you don't actually believe people writing abuse on social media is akin to rape...

Where in your mind is the line? What in your view are people allowed to post, in negative responses to let's say English football?

If the team play poorly and lose to San Marino, are fans allowed to voice discontent with the twamnor individual players? Do you deem the law an acceptable line, or would your standard be higher than the law allows?

No of course calling Harry Kane a sick on twitter is not the same as rape. Congratulations on making that astute point.

At no point was I comparing rape to abuse of players and refs. I was though comparing yours and AlRum's attitude that players either deserve it or are responsible for it because of their chosen profession. This is what is called victim blaming and my point is that if you blame footballers and refs for the abuse from others then you could very easily blame a woman for being raped because that is same thing.

As to the abuse in general. We're not talking about "lol Harry Kane is **** for missing that penalty." We're talking about "Harry Kane you dirty ******* piece of ****. How could you miss that penalty? You deserve to die. Next time you miss I'll kill you!"

Finally as for the legal side. It's always a wonderful argument to hide behind the law even if something is not moral. You know it is possible to make a wrong choice and not break the law. Why do some people need the law to tell them what is right and wrong?

Well listen, you're the one who equated online abuse with rape, I don't know why that was at the forefront of your mind, I couldn't think of anything further from the issue TBh...

But myself, nor Alrums blamed 'victims' for online abuse, I don't want to talk for him, but I believe his point was that to put yourself in the public eye attracts criticism, that's a choice you've made, he also clearly made a joke about English refs lol.

Now you've conflated online abuse with death threats. This is why I asked where your line is, so we have established that your bar is much higher than the law, you believe people shouldn't say legal things that you deem abusive?

If you have the hubris to victimise everyone who has read negative things about them online, and even more so to be the arbiter of morality in text, what does the overlord allow and what doesn't he? You say I hide behind the law, it's not hiding, it's finding a line in the sand to please the lord.

Let me offer some examples though, please let me know what you would term abusive, offencive, or ok:

'That passage of play was insane'

'Why are those dickheads still taking a knee?'

'You were barely touched by the defender man- up'

'Posh spice takes it up the arse...'

'Your ****' ?

Why is the concept of not being a **** to other people so difficult for you to grasp

Why can't you just answer the questions I pose? Or address the points? Why is it constant attacks with you? Pretty ironic on this issue no?

But feel free to take up the mantle, where is the line between genuine criticism and abuse? See the phrases above, which are abusive?

What you would or wouldn't say to their face is a decent indication

I 100% agree! However, that's not the current definition is it?

The definition of online abuse is getting broader and broader, by design.

Would you be surprised if I told you every comment above was deemed online abuse by differing football organisations?

Using the word insane, telling someone to man up, criticism of taking the knee, using an expletive, and referring to sexualised chants have all been explicitly categorised as online abuse by level playing field, Liverpool FC, kick it out and the British government.
