<article>Argentina coach Santiago Phelan has named a thirty man squad that will contest the Rugby Championship that includes Felipe Contepomi and Gonzalo Tiesi.
Contepomi captained Argentina in their two test series loss against England earlier this month.
Coach Phelan has added seven players from the June squad and two players from the young Argentina team who finished sixth at the Junior World Cup in France on the weekend.
Phelan has a mix of experience and youth and the senior players include back row forward Julio Farias Cabello and centre Gonzalo Tiesi, who captained Argentina in their 29-18 win over Georgia on Saturday.
The Pumas squad will fly to Pensacola, Florida USA for a fortnight of physical training at a specialist centre that they have used since 2007 when they finished third in the Rugby World Cup held in France.
The technical and tactical preparations step up from July the 15th and in August they will play two warm up matches against New South Wales Barbarians at undecided venues and dates.
Argentina squad
Horacio Agulla , Patricio Albacete , Ivan Marcos Ayerza , Marcelo Bosch , Oscar Gonzalo Camacho , Manuel Carizza , Felipe Contepomi , Agustín Creevy , Thomas Cubelli , Matías Díaz , July Farias Cabello , Juan Martin Fernandez Lobbe , Santiago Fernández , Juan Figallo , Mariano Galarza , Lucas González Amorosino , Eusebio Guiñazú , Juan Martin Hernandez , Juan Jose Imhoff , Martin Landajo , Juan Manuel Leguizamón , Nahuel Lobo , Benjamin Macome , Paul Matera , Juan Pablo Orlandi , Martin Rodriguez , Federico Nicolás Sánchez , Vicente Leonardo Senatore , Gonzalo Tiesi , Joaquin Tuculet.
Very good looking squad, no real surprises. I hope they can achieve a similar result as last year.

I'm not sure, Wallabies proved to be a more solid team than last year in the first Test against Lions. All Blacks and Boks have won all their Test this year. Then Pumas are in big trouble. Wallabies had many injured players last year.

Regards

South Africa did struggle a little against Scotland a team with a similar game style as Argentina....I think the Pumas will do around the same as last year and will be targetting their home games vs. South Africa and Oz. Any points away from home will be a bonus. I'd really like to see them pick a win they really deserved the game against the Boks last year at home, the game against the Wallabies was dreadful though, the first half was some painful rugby.

Also hasn't Contepomi retired from international play like three times and come back?

I'd really like Canada and the USA(obviously not this year for the RWCQ's) to try to get involved in the warm up matches in the future, it's been too long since we played Argentina in a full test, though the Jaguars have regularly toured along with some provincial sides against our CRC teams.

Sadly Manuel Montero broke anterior cruciate ligament of the knee, big loss. Strange that Phelan did not call the youngster Cordero from the Under 20 (superb fullback), perhaps because we are overloaded in the backs.
I hope at least one win.
Anyway best of all this is that at the end of this year Phelan ends his contract with the UAR.

If Argentina can build from what they did last year, and not have a hole of a tournament this year, but can find that consistent improvement - I can definitely see a couple of wins. The Boks can be very flat, and Argentina most definitely, obviously should've won last year at home against them. This year, beating SA or Aus at home is clearly within range, and if they don't make it 2 out of 2 there I bet they can take one in Australia: big scrum, and a couple of those spicy Argentinian tries would do the trick for a tight victory.

Yeah they can like starting to play for 80 minutes and not just for 60 minutes.

Looks a strong squad, going to be flying the Argentinian flag for the whole tournament. A couple of wins is a very achievable goal.

Hold up - Contepomi will play in this Rugby Championship...?

That's in one part great as I love the guy and I'd love to see him play in at least one Rugby Championship seeing as he was a big part of making Argentina competitive. On the other side I'm wondering why he is playing seeing he was so adament that he had retired from international rugby last year - when he was a year younger - to then join this time around? Don't get me wrong - I'd love to see him involved even if it is just from the bench - but still pretty confusing.

He's never retired once from international rugby.

I don't think you will find anything to back this up.

Argentine players who play for European clubs are not allowed to play both June and RC.

In 2012, Contepomi played June meaning he had to miss RC. He never said he retired from international and returned to the side in November. He has said definitely retire at the end of this year though.

things don't always pan out as planned - for better or worse. We're not robots, things change, we feel better/worse than we expected...and it's not like he SWORE to the blood he'd quit at this point so, if he feels like continuing, all the better.

Hope to see some grand Contepomi though: he can be a nice play maker.

Contepomi is retired from professional rugby, now he play in the arg. league, so he's free to play with the Pumas anytime.

I'd love to see them do well, but I think they might struggle to get results this year.
Last year was a weak year for SA and Aus, Aus had many injuries and a shocking SR campaign and Boks were rebuilding. I feel the Boks will be a bit stronger and Aus will be a lot stronger. NZ gap probably still to wide to be breached (by anyone) for now.
