IF you own a PS2 AND an Xbox...

Just to wade into the original arguement..........

I have always been a PS2 man, but only because some of the sports games I played have only been availiable to that system - this isn't the case anymore......

I got some time yesterday to check out the rugby 2005 PS2 demo at EB, and I must admit I was a little sceptical about gay guys comments but............I too was a little "underwhelmed" by the graphics. Gameplay was OK, but it did make me think that Xbox (from what I know) would make the experience so much better......

Needless to say I checked on trademe this morning and with a bid ending in 5 minutes purchased an Xbox with three controllers, five games (3 of which I will trade in for rugby 2005) for $250.00.
<
what a ways to go all out just for rugby

i thought about it myself

but couldnt justify it at all

all my friends have ps2's - only 1 mate has an xbox, and never plays it coz he comes over to mine to play GT4, GTA and TW2005 (much better on ps2).

I am sure I could get used to the face buttons to pass, but that wouldnt help me win "the boyz" weekend tournos which will be played on ps2 (as none of us bar 1 has an xbox)

it would be the only game i would buy on xbox aswell (i hate halo 2), and I only own sports games in which are all more playable with the ps2 controller (yes i am awares of the ps2 adaptor)

with GT4 and Rugby 2005 being my winter 2005 pastime, spending $300+ just for one game is not a smart thing to do..............i'd rather buy another ps2 and GT4 and hook up a LAN for GT4 battles and V8 battles.

The main issue is the games only avaiable on Xbox do not appeal to me
GT4 is a game i must have, and unless Xbox comes out with a killer game that appeals to myself, that I cannot get on ps2, only then will i purchase an Xbox.

i accept its a better machine - thats a FACT
but the machine is useless if the software does not appeal to you
Xbox exclusive games have a better competitor on PS2 IMO
As for Splinter Cell and V8's, i can put up with waiting an extra few months just like xboxers have to do with GTA
Project Gotham, and Halo 2 - GT4 beats PGR, and watching paint dry at 3am in a siberian winter, would appeal more to myself than Halo 2.
Oh and NRL2........i know it will prolly be on xbox, but i have the ease to sleep at night coz of PS2's confirmation!!!!!!!

Um...

GT4 = boring and given up after a month by 95% of gamers. Fanboys play for 2 more months

Where Sony have the market by the nut, they simply are nothing more than a TV repair shop.

Do you remember slagging off the Sega Saturn because it was an inferior mahine to the PSX? Well, the Saturn and the PS2 are very similar - they both have dual processor technology, they both are ******** to programme for, they both struggle to produce top quality visuals and they both only had a truly special game come out once a year.

Sony only sell PS2's because of their name. People only hate the Xbox because it's a subsiduary of Microsoft. People are dumb.

*Goes to play R2005 on PC where all the kits are correct (unlike Xbox) and there is no shitty slowdown (unlike PS2).

ur comment on GT4 is opinionated

i have owned it for 5 days, driven 1000kms (YES takes just as long in GT4 as it does in real life, its a sim with accuracy and authenticity that is lifelike) and only 20% complete.

if people dont play it after 2 months its coz they have already driven at the rate i have which is insanely unsociable being locked in a room

it been given credit where its rightfully due.......just read any review...ANY

if sony have the market by a nut and are simply a TV repair shop, this just goes to show the lack of effiency microsoft have had thus far.

never slagged the saturn coz of its processers - again slagged it coz of choice of games.

*goes and looks at my savings for the carribean cricket world cup tour......pc or world cup..........thousasnds for machine i'll only play games on that is outdated in a weeks time, or a trip to sunny jamaica with mates and cricket and BEER!

I buy consoles by game selection - for MY OWN TASTE
I dont pc's, coz my work can be done at work, and spending thousands just to play games is not feasable, i'd buy a netwrok of xbox's and ps2's instead for $3000

No. I hate that there are less selection of games, and I HATE the controllers. In fact, I HATE Sony with a vengence, but PS2 is just a better option for me. The controllers are better and I have to hold them for hours. Those xbox controllers are a killer for a lot of gamers.

Nothing to do with microsoft, although I do hate them too.

ANYWAY, I'll be getting rugby on PS2 coz that's what I own.

That's all I can say for sure (I literally trawled for hours through forums, game site reviews etc) until I have used them myself.

But if you CAN use component - use them...hell they're better and cheaper.
<
Thanks again. Helpful advice for sure.

No worries!

As for the guy (forgot name sorry) who wanted to get component or s-video cables for his PS2 to hook up to tv....just do a google search on NZ sites (option above google entry box) for "sony component video cable" + PS2...

or alternatively order them like I did to pick up from one of the many shops that stock them...

Gamesplanet or the gpstore.co.nz is a good site (for PS2 cables anyway).

PCs aren't naturally made for games...any research on this proves it. Unless of course you hook it up to a good tv....but that means for the good tv, the pc and all the exras needed to hide the fact that pc gaming always feels stilted and weird...will set you back thousands upon thousands of dollars!! ridiculous!
Consoles are social beasts and so am I!

Xbox has the best graphics...of course - it has the strongest engine.

BUT - the PS2 has, IMO, a much better game selection and MUCH, MUCH seperior controls. Even the xbox mag that reviewed rugby 2005, speaking of this ***le alone, stated emphatically that the PS2 controller was easier to use for this game and its requirement for cat-like reflexes.

If component cables are going to solve the graphics, lighting, detail and sound for me to an above satisfactory condition (one reviewer said it was like the difference between night and day - the b4 and after)....and the xbox ones are friggin hard to get and expensive to boot - then I think itis clear that the look of the game should be of no concern to any PS2 gamer...not even the most discerning....as it will all but be the same as Xbox looks w'out them (the component cables)..."framerate" aside. I think this is only relevant if you have played both...you just play Rugby 2005 on PS2 only - will probably not notice.

You xbox owners may as well get the game if you have that system...sure....good luck mastering that game (or more importantly..playing it for twelve hours straight) with that slab of concrete you call a control. The face of it looks like a Picasso painting.

Los Lover, I am amazed, are you talking about the Controller S
3a25d242-31d0-11d6-a0fb-00805fbbb715.gif

The standard Xbox controller for more than 2 1/2 years now,
Or the 'original' shite controller:
878controller.jpg

Because the Xbox controller s is very usable, and in many ways better than the PS2 controller. (eg. Racing games, FPS) and I remember you saying that the thumbsticks are in bad places. That is silly, they are in the perfect place, as it means that you must get used to using the left thumbstick as the main movement rather than the D-pad which is great as once you get used to it, you get much better precision and gives you more freedom as it is 360 degree rotational rather than 4-button movement.

THE END.

(....or is it?)

You obviously have played it for ages and thus are USED to it - I would have to start again. i will not do that so close to the release of PS3 and Xbox 2 etc etc....

I HATE FPS and driving games etc....I have 15 PS2 games - 12 are sport!!!
I need my game to be different every time - hence sport.

I need full control - hence the PS2 controller....only xbox gamers like it b/c they have to. The PS2 controller is just obviously good - every review says it is better - shesh!!

<<Do you mean this control>> !@!!!hahah!

Ironically, I didn't know about the control at the bottom - the one at the top (the supposedly new one) is the steaming pile of turd I was referring to!!

Look at that chunky four-bedroom, mixed up buttons - uneven and unaligned analogue sticks....oh that is just ugly...nay it is PORNOGRAPHIC!! I am reporting you, take that whopper off this thread immediately!!!

<
<

Seriously - don't be ridiculous Kaftka - we aren't talking about FPS and driving games - we are talking about rugby.

I think there are pros and cons each way - especially with the ease of PS2 component cables availability and price.....there is much equality suddenly.

Even if I had an xbox I would give it serous thought w/out my choice controller - BUT I would certainly NEVER buy an xbox so close to the advent of new machines.

I mean I just find that prettys tupid really - unless you're like totally loaded or something.

Just remember people are starving in africa ok?

hint: I have an idea for what the "s" in 'controller s' stands for. No wonder there is only a letter!!

Sorry, I can't let this one go unanswered....

I AM used to the analogue stick there..parallel with the other stick so that the movements coalign with my body.....

having the analogue stick where the d-pad is only suits people who only ever snuggled up with that piece of **** d-pad....end of story.

When you played spacies...did you have one lever infront of you and one planted smack bang near the bottom of the screen sticking out of the glass so that left was not quite true left and right was not quite true right...NO...of course not. That's why for Rugby 2005 the levers should be aligned and parallel..as they ARE on PS2.

It took me two weeks to adjust from d-pad to analogue and now I am ready to conquer the rugby world....bring it on!!!!

D'OH!!1!! I am full of shame! Iposted that bottom controller without even looking at it.
There are 6 buttons where that 'Delete' button is, and it has back, and start where the ctrl and alt. buttons are. Phewww.

anyway, I would like to get one thing straight here, I have both the PS2 and Xbox. I actually prefer the Xbox overall as it meets my gaming needs nicely (and if it's tru what Locks, GG, and Knowsley etc said about the controls for Rugby 05, I'll be stoked). I am not a fan of FPS on consoles (far too fidgety) I was only using it as an example. Both GTA VC and GTAIII were better on Xbox as opposed to PS2 (not just in the visuals either) in controls, and I will be getting San An on Xbox as well. (best game in the world will get better, can't wait)
As for sports games, I'd have to agree with you, PS2 has more 'definitive' buttons (theres no trigger here, squishy button there) and pressing the buttons on the PS2 controller is a lot better in a sports game. I don't really know, it's hard to explain. I am a huge fan of racing games (God it'd be beautiful if GT4 was on Xbox) so Forza motorsport is high on my list.
I will finish this post now as I am sick of typing.

fair enough, it's a personal preference really. The whole issue is, but hey, that's what a debate is for.

Anyway, with rugby 2005. On Xbox, the left Analogue stick is in the thumbs natural position (where the d-pad is, on ps2) and you do all of the movement with the thumbstick don't you?
With the right thumb, it is over the action buttons (A, ,B, X, Y) and that is where you'll be doing your passing, kicking, tackling etc. Therefore, the controls for basic playing are right there in the perfect position, and you just move your thumb down to the right analogue stick for special movements. So, your thumbs are in line when yo play, the thumbsticks don't need to be.
That blows away your alignment issue as with PS2, your left thumb will be down further than your right thumb most of the time.

Yes I agree it's preference and each to his own.

One thing though - your comments (addressing everything I already knew) do not BLOW my alignment point out of the water at all - NOT the way I hold it.
Otherwise your argument can't be right anyway, b.c when you go to initiate "special" moves you will be pulling your thumb out of alignment.

I play with both my thumbs poised over either analogue stick - in a symmetrical line.

can't argue tho - too hanging out for game and, like U, just can't post a-n-y...m..o..r........e.

....depends where you buy the X-box I suppose, what sort of "deal" you can get with it.........

I spent $250 on an Xbox on trademe.co.nz which is less then a year old. Comes with five free games. I'll trade in 3 of those for rugby 2005 (which in turn will cost nothing), leaving two others to trade for another game at some later date (most probably SJRL2).

Savings made on those games (as I would have purchased them anyhow) = at least $150.00??(remember I have only 2 games to trade in for SJRL2).

Take that away from the initial purchase of the Xbox ($250) and you are left with $100.00 forked out for better graphics etc............not to mention it also comes with extra controllers (which you might not get if buying brand new), saving further money.........

What I'm saying is it CAN make financial sense to buy another system now. I still have my PS2 (which by the way does not play "blue discs" anymore), and the world around me is a much happier place

Okay okay, okay, now I'm just stirring.

It's true though.

Unless you are weird.

In which cae your thumbs positions are probably caused from too much playstation so you should give it a rest.

Just one more thing though, when you say you have both your thumbs over the thumbsticks, what about when you play games like PES, Fifa, RL, Madden etc. etc. As you say you always play your games with the left stick, and with these games, you need your other thumb to be over the face buttons. That's why I prefer The Xbox thumbstick layout.

Just played both the ps2 & xbox version on hdtv with combo component video. Let me preface this by saying I putchase almost ea sports games for my ps2 games. (my son prefers the xbox)...

Xbox graphics are better no suprise. not a hugh difference but better.

Xbox didn't have as many framerate problems. Still had a few when I scored a try with my #8.

Here's the shock. Xbox controller felt better. It was easier usign just the flipper buttons for player change & speed burst and concentrate the using the thumb to pass left or right. I forgot how easy passing witht eface buttons was but now I remebr back to the sega genesis days of Rugby 95. I hate the xbox controller for most games but it really felt better.

Load times - I know the ps2 is slower but other than savong profiles the initial load times weren't a big deal.

By the way, the players did look farther away went set to widescreen vs. normal. Also, I voted for classic 2 view but I wouldn't play anything but side now.

Just my opinions, not any statement of fact.

Good review Chuque but i own Ps 2 and cant afford Xbox am i going to be really dissapointed because I own PS2. I can understand Xbox having better graphics but does the PS2 on sideview look much different to xbox on sideview? All this talk is starting to get me down for the first time.

Forget them bro!

We have always had PS2 and compared to games we've had it looks great - get the s-video cable or component cable to compliment it (perfect writing, colours, definition, picture resolution etc) and you'll f***ing love it.

Until the game comes out I would ignore the If YOu HAVE BOTH threads...honestly.

<

Don't be bummed out.. If I had to grade the ps2 would be an 8 and xbox 8.5; enjoyment-wise both games are equal.

But if you had to pick one, I owuld pick xbox...

Thanls bud just dried my eyes and feel better lol. I still have to wait about another week for my game to get here while everyone is playing till there hearts content.
