IRB Player of the year 2012

What about Aaron Smith? he has brought some added venom the the already deadly All Black backline, and has score some amazing tries also...

Hahaha I just read through the whole thread.
The anti-McCaw sentiment is just laughable.

Some posters seem to think that he shouldn't get the award this year (even if he is the most deserving) because he won it in '09 when they felt he shouldn't have got it!?!

Haters gonna hate no matter what I guess...

It's only fair O'Driscoll gets it this year... Go full circle from 09

Just an update to the thread, when are the nominees released? There's only 1 more week of international rugby and I really thought the list would have been out by now.

Kahn Fotualii. He has proven himself at test level that he is one of OR the best scrumhalf in the world.

The IRB should stop this biased rubbish selections.

Eh no. He is rubbish for his club.

Since when? He's been great for the O's this season. It took him a little bit of time to settle in, but he's come good now. Not sure he's been the best international player this year though.

Fotuali'i is a very good scrum half, probably the best playing in Wales right now.
A much better player than Rhys Webb, in possibly every facet of the game.

Pretty much sums it up perfectly. He didn't just come in immediately and start on great form, but gradually he has settled into the Ospreys side and this season has been good. He has a good work rate and attitude, and is a much better more rounded player than Webb (who started ahead of him briefly when Fotuali'i was still just settling in last season and hadn't hit top form) as Draggs said. Fotuali'i showed some great class for Samoa, as well as the Wales match where he created Pisi's try, he saved Samoa from a defeat to Japan in the PNC after they went 16-0 behind by doing some great touches such as (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QOtwFIOv5rA&t=42m35s) and (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QOtwFIOv5rA&t=45m21s)

The shortlist came out:
Richie McCaw, Dan Carter, Frédéric Michalak and... Owen Farrell.

That's really surprising and extremely underwhelming. It will go to McCaw, but I'd like to see it go to DC.

no read but farrell??? how and why??

Farrell doesn't even make the England starting team. Just saw the selection panel, which one of these are pals with Farrell?

The IRB Awards panel comprises some of the biggest names in the Game in Will Greenwood, Gavin Hastings, Raphaël Ibanez, Francois Pienaar, Agustín Pichot, Scott Quinnell, Tana Umaga and Paul Wallace.

Kieran Read is perhaps unlucky to miss out.

I think Juan Martín Fernández Lobbe would have a shout of making the shortlist, but he ruined his chance a bit with poorer matches against France and Ireland, even though he had been outstanding in all of the Pumas matches earlier this year.

Dan Lydiate could have been another contender but got injured and that ruined his chances (although Michalak only played for half of the year too I guess). Still, both would have been infinitely better choices than Farrell.

This is just surrealistic. Owen Farrell? I mean, they must be joking. we are probably talking about the worst fly half playing international rugby in Tier 1, with Orquera and Burton completing the podium. This is just an insult to rugby fans.
