RWC 2015 Qualifiying

Africa Cup 1A 1st round

Kenya suprisingly walks over Uganda 52-11 (16-6 HT)...
Meanwhile Zimbabwe have scored 22 unasnwered points to come back and take the lead on Madagascar 25-18 probably around 10-12 minutes left in match. No live streaming available, only live telecasts are in Madagascar so we have to rely on internet updates.

*Now 35 unanswered, 38-18 Zimbabwe up.

Zimbabwe 38-18 Madagascar is final.

Relegation match: Uganda vs. Madagascar
Championship: Kenya vs. Zimbabwe

My guess is still Uganda going down, Madagascar were more competeive from ths sounds of things and I think the home crowd pushes them through. Don't know if anyone can challenge a fit and full strength Namibia next year.

there's only one team able to stop Namibia from qualifying to RWC 2015. It's Namibia. If they are not going to fool around again, and accept the forthcoming games seriously - they will have their ticket to London. But they are so emotionally unstable, you know... :D

If you don't mind me asking, what is a Namibian rugby fan doing in the Ukraine? ;)

Interesting note and article brought up in the FIRA-AER forums, based on the sound of it, whoever wins 1A (Zimbabwe or Kenya) may have the home-field advantage next season by getting the right to host for 2014...don't know how legitimate it is, but certainly an incentive to go out and win this final. Too bad Madagascar didn't advance, that would've been something, playing to host a third straight year.

Uganda did beat Kenya only a few weeks ago in the Elgon Cup (first leg in Uganda), certainly the result today was a shocker regardless.

I believe the same stuff you are doing. Work, family, leisure. Usual things, you know))

But maybe you mean it's kind of weird that a guy from UA likes Namibian rugby? Well, life is full of surprises. You can meet Welsh guy supprting club from England, or British guy cheering for All Blacks. You can meet Ukrainian guy loving Namibian rugby as well. :D

Agree. Madagascar is kind of scary playing at home

Oh certainly, I just find it quite interesting. I don't think we have any other Namibian fans or Ukrainian members here. Nice to have though!

Is Kotze still playing for Namibia? I though he was a shining light of the team and one of the best fly halfs in the world cup, seemed amazing

Yeah he is and is still a point machine for them, his tactical kicking is still godly, I saw him put some perfect ones into the corner vs. Tunisia. I'm surpised he hasn't been given much of a chance in pro leagues, I think he was playing at a low level in SA last season.

Here is another Namibian ledge bag....Jacques Burger...

Next year's Africa 1A fixtures for the Africa 1 slot.

Madagascar v. Zimbabwe (again)
Namibia v. Kenya

Kenya have put in a bid to host, and I heard that possibly the winner this year would have first right to host. If that is the case, Kenya may have that key home advantage in next year's African finale.

Here is some footage from the Madagascar v. Zimbabwe match a few days ago, Madagascar commentary:

Found some videos from last year's African 1B tournament.

According to the IRB, over 40,000 per match have been in attendence in Madagascar for 2012 1B and this years 1A. A Madagascar source listed it between 25,000-30,000. Still a lot!

Things are getting more and more simple in the qualifying process with the majority of teams already eliminated. Again there is quite a long break before we have another qualifying matches (Canada-USA matchup in August), so I'll do a summary of the situation for the moment. As the previous time, I'll go through every continent and list the teams which still have the chance to qualify for England 2015, together with some comments and (wishful) tips for qualifiers.

Africa
Already qualified: South Africa
Qualifier places: 1
Repechage places: 1

Still in hunt: Zimbabwe, Kenya, Madagascar, Namibia (4 teams)

The final qualification for RWC2015 will be the CAR Division 1A tournament in 2014, with the winner of the four team draw going to England and the runner-up having one more chance in the repechage. Though Namibia have to be viewed as favourites after coming back from lower divisions, Kenya are the current DIV 1A champions and perhaps they finally will be able to transform their status in sevens to XV rugby. And of course many of us (me included) are happy that Madagascar is still in the hunt, I hope the unbelievable passion for the game in this country will be rewarded with something.

My tip (very wishful I have to admit):
Qualifier: KenyaRepechage: Madagascar

Americas
Already qualified: Argentina
Qualifier places: 2
Repechage places: 1

Still in hunt: Canada, USA, Uruguay (3 teams)

It's very simple in Americas, 3 spots and 3 teams left, but there's still a lot to play for - obviously avoiding the repechage, not having to play too many matches and finally the spot in group B vs. group D (though I'm not sure which one would be better).
The two North American Tier 2 countries play directly for a qualifier spots, with the loser (I think it will probably be USA, but you never know in such tense games) still getting a second chance versus Uruguay, who will have to do really well to beat the loser. But it would be good to see Uruguay in RWC, and if USA had to play repechage, we could see a nice game vs. some European team.

My tip:
Qualifiers: Canada, Uruguay
Repechage: USA

Asia
Already qualified: none
Qualifier places: 1
Repechage places: 1

Still in hunt: Japan, South Korea, Hong Kong, Philippines, Sri Lanka (5 teams)

Again a simple process: the winner of next year's 5 Nations goes to RWC, the runner-up has one more chance in the repachage. Of course Japan is 99,9% certain to take the qualifier place without any trouble. South Korea should be the favourites to get the repechage place, as they finished as a runner-up in two previous editions. I'm still keeping my fingers crossed for Philippines though, and luckily they managed to hold on in top division the first year, maybe next year they could attack higher ranked nations?

My tip:
Qualifier: Japan
Repechage: South Korea

Europe

Already qualified: England, France, Wales, Ireland, Scotland, Italy
Qualifier places: 2
Repechage places: 1

Still in hunt: Georgia, Portugal, Romania, Russia, Spain, Belgium, Czech Republic, Germany, Ukraine, Moldova, Poland, Sweden, Netherlands, Israel, Luxembourg (15 teams)

Many teams still have a chance to qualify, but it's pretty certain that the 2+1 winning places will go to teams from European Nations Cup Division 1A, which means Georgia, Portugal, Romania, Russia, Spain and Belgium.

My tip:
Qualifiers: Georgia, Romania
Repechage: Russia

Oceania
Already qualified: New Zealand, Australia, Samoa, Tonga
Qualifier places: 1
Repechage places: 0

Still in hunt: Fiji, Cook Islands (2 teams)

A surprise outcome of this year's Oceania Cup means it will be Cook Islands, not favourites Papua New Guinea facing Fiji to get a ticket to England. Anyway, the Fijians are virtually guaranteed a place in RWC, but nevertheless congratulations to Cook Islands.

My tip:
Qualifier: Fiji

Repechage
The four teams which earned a repechage places will battle for the last spot in RWC2015.

My tip, assuming my previous tips (Madagascar, USA, South Korea, Russia): USA

So, currently there are still 29 teams fighting for just 8 spots in RWC2015 and we can expect the most exciting battle in Africa. If my predictions come true, we'll see Kenya, Canada, Uruguay, Japan, Georgia, Romania, Fiji and USA in England.

Good summary Black Magic, but I think your tips are a lot of wishful thinking. I'd go with:

Europe 1/2: Georgia, Romania
Europe 3: Russia
Americas 1: Canada
Americas 2: USA
Africa 1: Namibia
Africa 2: Zimbabwe
Asia 1: Japan
Asia 2: South Korea
Oceania: Fiji
Repechage: Russia

Uruguay are pretty unlikely to beat the US. They'll probably destroy the Eagle scrum but their backs are pretty impotent. Namibia will have all of their players turn up and Zimbabwe will too. Zimbabwe were missing many of their best players for this year's Africa Cup and were still competitive. I'd love to see Kenya get there and maybe they'll have a chance if they get to play at home, but it just doesn't seem likely to me. What will be interesting is to see what kind of squads Zimbabwe and Kenya can get with the RWC in such close reach over such a short period. I could see Kenya getting Adongo and some of the 7s guys to turn up as well as Zimbabwe getting some uncapped overseas pros. That could make things a bit more interesting. Madagascar are a good story, but they're really going to be up against it IMO.

I'd agree with this, with the caveat, Namibia are probably still in the toughest spot, as they must beat Kenya to at least get a repechage chance.

I also think Russia might get beaten by Uruguay in the repechage round, Russia have taken some steps backward since 2011 and their attack is nowhere near as dangerous. Matches in Montevideo are difficult and Lemoine is doing wonders with Los Teros set piece, I would rate that as a 50-50 shot, but Uruguay would need a decent size win at home.

-144 games played
-847 tries
-537 conversions (63.4% success rate)
-480 penalties
-26 drop goals
-6827 total points

-92 times a team has scored 4 or more tries in a match (10 times both teams in match have scored 4 or more tries)
-40 games decided by 7 points or less (27.8% of matches)
-5 draws
-1 match went to extra time (Namibia v. Madagascar, 2012)

-Asian matches feature most tries per match with 8.2, conversions with 5.3, and points with 59.3
-African matches feature most penalty goals per match with 4.4, most drop goals per match with 0.7, and best conversion success rate with 68.6%.

Player statistics still incomplete, waiting for official African 1A match stats. Here is where it stands now without those:
-Warongkorn Khamkoet (Thailand) still leads overall points leaderboard with 105 points (4T, 11C, 20P, 1D)
-Of players who have not been eliminated (chance to play more matches), Riza Mubarak (Sri Lanka) leads pack with 78 points (1T, 20C, 11P).

-Kim Gwong Min (Korea) leads everyone with 8 tries. Team is still in, so chance to add more next spring.

-Ayumu Goromaru (Japan) leads all with 25 conversions.

-Khamkoet has hit the most penalties with 20. Of players still in contention, Floren Vlaicu (Romania) has 19.

-Armin Vehabovic (Bosnia & Herzegovina) has most drop goals with 3. Jaime Nava (Spain) with 2 is leader with players still with matches left.

TEAMS ELIMINATED AND REMAINING
Americas 16, 3 remaining = 19 total
Asia 12, 5 remaining = 17 total
Africa 9, 4 remaining = 13 total
Europe 16, 15 remaining - 31 total
Oceania 3 eliminated, 2 remaining - 5 total

TOTAL 56 eliminated, 29 remaining = 85 total in qualifiers
