Nolan has never done casting to conform to those people wish, some us remember the controversy with casting Heath Ledger as the Joker (brilliant). then Anne Hatahway (also brilliant), then Harry Styles (fine). He'll get the best most interesting person for the role and pretty much everyone in The Odyssey is perfectly cast from an acting ability stand point.

Since The Dark Knight he's pretty much had a blank check to make whatever he wishes and is a pretty uncompromising director in filming his vision because his name alone guarantees you upwards of $450M (Tenet being his biggest "flop" since and that was a mid to late Pandemic film)

As I was taking some much needed space from this forum this was my mid year ranking of new films in cinema this year I've seen. As usual only the bottom 2 are actual stinkers.

Its fine, its a bit of Gunn facsimile in that it feels like someone trying to make a Gunn film but not knowing quite what the magic stardust is. Cast are great though.

I liked The Odyssey very much, Project Hail Mary was very good as well. The Devil wears Prada 2 was pretty good (more deep than the first film) , but if to choose one of those three, I'd give the first place to the Odyssey and will definitely rewatch it in the future.
NB absolutely loved the Odyssey soundtrack, it's brilliant - especially the scene with sirens, my favourite one...very beautiful moment (in all: soundtrack, aesthetically beautiful filming and sense of the scene)!

More he's hitched to the bandwagon late in the day after 1st weekend box office. Now he's going to make a historically accurate Scylla using AI....because AI is going to do better than one of the most accomplished film directors currently working.

My facebook feed has been trying to push this moronic culture war for months this was the first I heard of Musk getting involved.

I'm kinda the same, I don't want to miss anything going to the toilet but am I going to go to the cinema and NOT get a Tango Ice Blast? I'm not a caveman

They should bring in options to view with an intermission if directors are going to continue to push for/past the 3hr mark

Bah Ive sat though the extended LOTR in recent years. The key trick is to not drin fluids beforehand and find a comfy posh cinema like an Everyman.

Me and the wife had a bittle of prosecco during the film.

(I did like The Brutalist had an intermission, I did not like people were still talking after the intermission ended)

I attempted a LOTR once years ago, i managed half way through the 2nd before the knee and back pain was too much!!!

Ive done a lot of sitting since, in preperation, for my everest, im going to attempt it again near end of the year

Legroom is why I say everyman, you sit on a couch and I always have plenty of room to put my feet up.

The boy wants to watch Spiderman and I really want to watch the Odyssey. Thought the Mrs would take one for the team and take him but she hates Spider-Man. She said why don’t you sneak him into the Odyssey. It’s not a 12A love.

Intriguing watching the brain meltdown of people who said clearly Nolan's Odyssey would be rubbish because the translation he used mainly and acknowledges was written by a woman suddenly discover said woman hates the film massively.

(Other academic scholars quite enjoy Nolan's adaptation)

Got tickets to watch it in 70mm IMAX next month (the UK has only 3 screens which can show it)

Yeah everything I read of her criticism didn't ring true to me but even though technically her translation is an adaptation when people are so in love with a story in a certain way any deviation is hated. But film is a diffrent medium and thus changes are inherent.

I find it especially hard to understand when we know its an oral story that probably changed a lot over time before Homer wrote it down and there is likely no definitive version. Even the attribution to Homer is under dispute.

Still shes read it so her opinion is more expert than mine.

The Odyssey is very good, ridiculously good looking, insane cast and manages to stay engaging for the full 3 hours. That said, definitely not something I think I’ll ever watch again as good as it is. I enjoyed parts of it a good bit more than others, they definitely rushed through buts (Lestrygonians) but overall pretty stunning.

That boycott surely has to go down as one of the least effective in history right?
