I voted for Montpellier to win.

I think they can. So much young talent with a coach who has direction. 6 Pumas, all will be in the 2012 Tri Nations (Four Nations), plus three French internationals and the, now, world famous Georgian Godzilla in the pack too. I think Perpignan will be midtable again and Clermont will be overtaken by the likes of Toulon and Racing Metro. Stade Français are to make the play-offs after two horrible years. Toulouse favorites, of course, but not I think they´ll lose a number of big matches and not be the force away from home.

Olivier Milloud - Bourgoin
Now one of the oldest players in the Top 14, at his peak he was a very tough scrummager and was unlucky to be in a generation of French props where competition was fierce, it's hard to gauge how good he is now because he has played very little for Bourgoin since the 2007 Rugby World Cup and suffered a couple of serious injuries, last season he was rotated with Arnauld Tchougong. To be honest I expected him to retire before this season, although there are a quite a few veteran props still going in the Top 14 (Freshwater, Scelzo, Marconnet) but none of them have had so much injury problems for four years. I expect he won't play too much after the World Cup when Roncero returns, hopefully for Stade Français he can help the development of France "A" prop Rabah Slimani.
Verdict: Good World Cup cover, his experience could be useful for the younger props but he won't be able to manage to many matches from the season

Stan Wright - Leinster
Another veteran who comes after suffering a serious injury, known by Leinster fans as the "cookie monster" he had a good few years for Leinster but was clearly not needed and thus has joined Stade simply the definition as the coaches pet. He never let down Leinster, and is quite a useful signing for Stade in my opinion, I doubt he will be too much of a burden on the wage bill and will be a good team player, this signing is a bit of a risk though as it's yet to be seen whether he will regain form after a nasty injury last year, at nearly 33 he may only have a couple of good seasons left in him and one more injury could finish him.
Verdict: A good cheap option although a bit of a risk after his form being unproven coming back from injury

Nahuel Tetaz Chaparro - Pampas XV
He wasn't the first choice Pampas XV tighthead, and I don't expect he will feature too much for Stade and will be a squad member like Pedro Ledesma the man he is presumably replacing. I think however the man who was the first choice Pampas XV tighthead Maximiliano Bustos would have been a good signing for Stade and could have been the first choice tighthead for many years, but Montpellier snapped him up.
Verdict: Decent backup, but Maxmiliano Bustos would have been a better signing

Zura Zhavia - AIA
Apparently he was immense in the Junior World Trophy (the Junior World Cup for second tier nations), I expect he will be your typical Georgian prop
Verdict: Stade could have unearthed another Kubriashvili

Aled de Malmanche - Chiefs
Stade needed a new reserve hooker as Szarzewski has spent a lot of the last couple of seasons injured, Gary Botha who signed for Toulouse would have been a better signing.
Verdict: Good enough for what Stade needed, but not sure if he's good value

Gerhard Mostert - Sharks
Possibly an underrated player, made his Springboks debut this summer due to a spate of injuries to locks, he played flanker earlier in his career which he may find himself doing more often again for Stade where there is less depth, with Tom Palmer missing for large chunks of the season in England training camps, and the possibility of Papé being missing too, I think he is an astute signing.
Verdict: Good signing, should give Palmer and Papé very hard competition for their places.

Anton van Zyl - Stormers
Man of the match for the Barbarians against South Africa last December, but then was ignored by the Stormers after the rise of Elstadt, a good signing. This kind of South African forward have a history of doing very well in France, players who haven't done much at international level have flourished in France such as Sowerby, Vosloo, Claassen and Adri Badenhorst.
Verdict: Another good value signing who won't hurt the budget

Scott LaValla - Ulster Ravens
I'm not sure what the point was in this signing, especially with van Zyl and Mostert arriving, and Flanquart as a young French player should be given game time ahead of him as well.
Verdict: Unless he becomes a versatile utility forward who would be useful on the bench, he will not play much and will be well behind Papé, Palmer, Mostert and van Zyl

Arthur Chollon - Bordeaux-Bègles
After there was a point when Stade had Haskell, Taylor, Bergamasco, Parisse, Rémy Martin, Leguizamon, Burban and Rabadan all in the same squad, the current back row or at least the flankers looks very low key, I can't judge Chollon after I've never heard of him but one would have expected after freeing up Haskell's no doubt inflated wages Stade could afford someone with international pedigree.
Verdict: Never heard of him, could turn out to be like Fakaté at Montpellier, who knows?

Lei Tomiki - Reds
Hardly played at all for the Reds, but was good for Castres a few years ago, a typical Pacific Island sort of back row, a good signing in my opinion and could be a useful impact player of the bench, I hope now any Wallaby hopes he ever had are gone he will play for the nation of his birth, Tonga.
Verdict: Surplus at the Reds, but could surprise people who've forgotten him from his time in France

David Lyons - Scarlets
Not a good signing, he has no chance of playing when Parisse is around and is likely to be in France just for the pay check, he didn't have the best season for the Scarlets last year either, Albi's former talisman Vincent Clément would have been a better signing.
Verdict: An expensive player to have sat on the bench

Jérôme Fillol - Racing-Métro
A player who's heart lies with the club, although he started with Toulouse and has played with rivals Racing-Métro for a few years he spent most of his best years of his career at Stade Français, he's only likely to be third choice scrum half and a fly half if needed though he stated he will play for Stade even if they were relegated to Féderale 2 (whilst in the club were in financial crisis), which suggests to me he is devoted to this club.
Verdict: Good signing, players like him around the squad are a bonus, which is why I think Mathieu Blin should have had his contract renewed last season as well

Byron Kelleher- Toulouse
A big name, and although he was good for Toulouse he is now 34 and has had a long term injury, I think he could just be there for the money, Stade will struggle to get two seasons out of him at his age.
Verdict: I feel Toulouse got rid at just about the right time

Paul Warwick - Munster
Warwick didn't have a great season with Munster, but is a useful player for a squad to have due to his versatility.
Verdict: Another player who Cheika perhaps knew well from his time in Ireland, but he has declined since Cheika left

Felipe Contepomi - Toulon
Not a great signing, a really nice guy and was awesome during his spell with Leinster, but had a poor spell with Toulon and hasn't looked good for Argentina over the past year, another concern is that he's been signed to play 10 when many including myself think he's more suited to 12.
Verdict: Not the player he was, another coaches pet, and like Kelleher Stade will struggle to get two seasons from him

Morgan Turinui - Dax
The very fact he could only play for a ProD2 team for the last couple of seasons shows how much he fell of the Aussie radar after his 20 Wallaby caps, not the most inspired replacement for Bastareaud.
Verdict: How did this guy win 20 Australia caps?

Paul Sackey - Toulon
Didn't have a good time at Toulon, probably there just for the money, I'm sure there were some better options to be signed out there than him. Hopefully for Stade he defends better than he did in that 6-42 match against South Africa a few years ago.
Verdict: Mercenary

Paul Williams - Sale
A good player, he impressed me playing for Samoa, and from reports he did well in a poor Sale side, should be a good reliable first XV player.
Verdict: Good signing

Alex Rokobaro & Vilive Namosolo Aria
Verdict: Two Fijian wingers who are nearly always very talented and should be good signings if their commitment is better than some of their fellow countyman

Bustos went to Montpellier because of Gaulthie´s previous experience as Argentina assistant coach. He has targetted these guys and now there are six of them at the club. Only Juan Figallo was signed without his input.

I think Contepomi is a good signing as someone to get the club back on track for the next two years before he likely retires. The club will then sign a big name player from another club or country and will be back to being the biggest money making club. Someone like Johnny Sexton, Berrick Barnes or Dan Carter will be playing 10 for Stade Français in 2014... just you wait.

Aside from Montpellier, Clermont have been missing the most players due to the RWC and yet they've been quite dominant early on. Fofana, Vosloo and a handful of others have stepped up dramatically and the club looks stacked. Their only loss came to Toulouse and defeated a "stronger" Toulon side 17-0 already. Racing Métro are dealing with some issues within the camp from what I've heard, which would explain dropping matches to UBB and Bayonne after starting the season very well.

I agree about Toulouse. I think they'll have it in them to contend for the Heineken Cup, but not enough to pick up that all important Brennus Shield. It will be interesting to see if Montpellier can revive themselves with a large crop of their talent returning soon. I'm sure that they will make the playoffs, but as I feared, they suffered a horrible start to the season.

The rest of the league has shown to be very competitive with the likes of Castres proving that they're as good, if not better, than last season. The biggest loser so far is Biarritz. Even though they've been missing their core players, they should not be at the bottom of the table at this stage. It will be interesting to see if they can climb their way back up to earn a playoff spot, but they will have to pick up the slack right away and not drop easy home matches.

@Melhor: Castres are proving you wrong again, you always say that they will struggle for the past few seasons, and this season you said they made some poor signings, but one of those signings Rory Kockott had an inspired display during an away win over Montpellier today, who despite looking impressive in attack lack discipline in defence

I also watched Racing-Métro against Toulon, and that match was one of the most boring I've seen for a while, something's wrong at Racing they were like a rolling stream of errors, they were smashed at scrum time by Kubriashvili, Bruno and Emmanuelli, and I think need to invest in some more quality forwards, and get Chabal (who is one of the highest paid players in the world) of their payroll, he may sell tickets but he's struggling to even make the matchday 23 now

Castres are doing well - not scoring tries though. Lets see what happens when all the teams have their full rosters. Montpellier really missed the their French and Pumas players. Had they played Castres would not have won.

I watched Agen vs Paris today. Wow, Agen turned it on! Really creative tries.

Bayonne look to be in trouble big time! Mike Phillips is needed urgently.

Perpignan were clueless. Tehy´ll be okay though with the World Cup players back soon.

and of course Gorgodze! when Fernández came on he made a big difference and was very creative (nearly created a try with a very neat chip kick but Audrin fluffed it up by not gathering the ball), also throughout the start of the season I haven't been impressed by the Montpellier stand in fly half Raphaël Lagarde, he's been poor, they need Trinh-Duc back, but they have the foundations of a good side, very strong set piece, good ball carriers and a bit of creativity in the backs, they just need to stop some very silly penalties (one penalty yesterday was for tugging a player's shirt back whilst he was chasing a tap and go, and the player was miles away from the ball)

you are right about Castres too, their strength is certainly in defense, they defended very cleverly against Montpellier, and made Montpol make errors and then capitalized on any indiscipline in kicking range to win, Rory Kockott was a standout player in particular and looks a very good signing

Bayonne have brought in some big names, but around them the side is poor, looking at the side that lost yesterday on paper it isn't great, I don't think Phillips will be the key difference, although he's rediscovered some top form, I feel he is a player just there for the money and remember how bad he was for the 18 months prior to the World Cup? also for Bayonne, Lauaki has been off the pace and is struggling with illness (he's playing a one match and then missing two), whilst Rokocoko, Heymans, Phillips, Tialata and Chisholm have yet to turn up

don't know what's going on at Biarritz, I don't think they'll be relegated when the regain Yachvili, Harinordoquy and Lakafia but their playoff chances and H Cup qualifiying chances look very distant now, Perpignan as well, I've never seen them beaten so badly at home like that before, but as you say they'll regain players like Mas soon

Biarritz will definitely have to turn it on once they have everyone back, but considering this and the close points race (eight points back from a playoff spot eight matches into the season), they should have the ability to do so. I don't know how anyone could possibly think Stade Français will make the playoffs. Their issues are still present, they're inconsistent, better, but they still need more time.

Castres may not be try scorers, but they've always been able to put points on the board. Fullback Romain Teulet has been at the top, or thereabouts, for most points scored in the league for many years. They should have no trouble securing a playoff spot considering how well they've been playing, but as I mentioned before the season started, they did need a strong start in order to do so. Clermont will be an even stronger force once they have everyone back and Racing Métro should be able to turn things around once they sort out their internal issues.

UBB and Lyon will have a difficult time staying up this season as Agen stepped up their game with some fantastic rugby. Brive also needed a strong start to the season and have done fairly well so far. I think Bayonne will be floating around the bottom if things don't turn out well for them with their new acquisitions.

November 5, mark your calenders ...

Looking thru the Fixture list.. It seems Bordeux will be playing ALL their matches at Stade Delmas.. Which is a nice Big stadium at 32K+.

But looking over it.. It seems Racing and Stade Francias will have NO games at the SDF... I guess Racing are saving up for their new Stadium.. and SF are in money trouble i guess.

Also Lyon wont seem to be playing anymore games this season at their big stadium.

I have only seen Biaritz going to play one match at the Stade Anoeta?

Yes, for their big derby match against Bayonne. Usually the Anoeta is only used for big matches like that or high drawing H-Cup fixtures.

Lyon have their new 8,000 capacity Matmut stadium, so I'm sure they want to utilize it as much as possible.

I also think you're right about Stade Français and RM92.

They're playing both games against each other at SDF, plus receiving Toulouse (both teams), Toulon (SF only) and Clermont (SF at least) there.

oh dear, Clermont thrash bottom of the table Biarritz 41-0, their morale must be really low now

Iain Balshaw looked dreadful in that match, kept dropping the ball in attack and poor defensive work also, Clermont looked very good though

maybe Biarritz will focus on staying in the Top 14 than their H Cup group with Ospreys and Saracens now

it's a massive shame that Thomas Domingo will now miss the rest of the season, first Barcella gets destroyed by long term injury (and he's not been as good as he was before in my opinion), now Domingo

Wilkinson looked a different player for Toulon today, he was goosestepping players!

Simon Shaw was in attendance at Toulon by the way, looks like he's going to sign there as a medical joker for Bakkies

Contepomi didn't have his finest match for Stade nor Beauxis for Toulouse, but the Stade pack played well especially Parisse and Roncero, unlucky not to be on the winning side as Julien Dupuy hit the post twice

I don't understand the call to replace Ngwenya with Balshaw, unless he was injured and he didn't appear to be. Overall, this was one of the worst performances from this team I've ever seen. Did you notice that Biarritz made all seven subs within the first 20 minutes? I didn't like the move to bring in Jean-Pascal Barraque so early when the coach decided that there was nothing to play for. He's one of the world's best young players and should not be thrown to the dogs.

However, I'm not worried. Once Biarritz are full strength they should have no trouble avoiding the drop, especially considering that the season is just nine matches in. Next week's Basque derby is the perfect match for a turnaround with their top French players returning to play. Two or three big wins could put them right back in the playoff race.

Other teams may have lost more players than Biarritz but Biarritz seem very reliant on their missing players especially Yachvili and also injured players such as Erik Lund

there are a few players who have proved not good enough (Lesgourges, Burotu, Balshaw are all pants)

I don't think they'll go down though, Harinordoquy, Yachvili and Traille will sort them out, I agree though they through some young players such as Couet-Lannes, Watremez, Molcard and Guyot into the Lions den

For Clermont, I really like some of their youngsters, Fofana looks like he could be another international prospect (a lot of talent at centre in France at the moment), Buttin also looks promising as well as the two Fijian wingers and the Portuguese back row Julien Bardy and Gerhard Vosloo looks an great signing

it's kind of a shame that Lee Byrne who's getting old and is really bad now, will probably push out young Buttin, especially as Floch is there too, they didn't really need to import a full back

but I hope Nakaitaci, Fofana and Buttin will challenge all the older players who've come in like King, Sivivatu and Byrne

I also noticed the Clermont backline was playing a lot more inventively than last season, HCup contenders for sure

I believe Montpellier, Clermont (tells us how good the latter is) and Biarritz had the most players missing during the rugby world cup, but that's no excuse for playing so poorly. I haven't heard anything about internal issues and they still had good players like Peyrelongue and their young future stars, so my guess would be that they just didn't start well and have lost all confidence at this point. Sort of how Stade Français spiraled out of control, though their issues combined internal issues, making it far more difficult to recover.

I agree on your call on Balshaw, Burotu and Lesgourgues, only I believe the latter will recover since he's so young and will be playing under Yachvili. He needs to put on some muscle though.

I honestly believe that Clermont is quickly becoming the world's best rugby club. The amount of established talent they currently have, combined with a large number of potential young French superstars is enough to get anyone excited whether they're a fan or not.

There are two matches called off this weekend, the latest being the Basque derby due to the outbreak of mumps within the Lyon camp (Biarritz faced them two weeks ago). The entire rugby league competition in France has been delayed indefinitely until further notice and it looks like the Top 14 may be doing the same. We'll have to wait and see what happens from here.

I saw that in passing yesterday, the headline said something like "Mike Philips debut is delayed due to mumps", I just thought he had it, not the games were cancelled!
Mad!

The Toulon-Agen match has also been postponed by the LNR. Brive and Racing Métro will face each other today and the rest of tomorrow's matches are still scheduled to take place for now.

I didn't see what happened, but Clermont will be fine without him for a while if he is suspended, which he probably will be.
