Exeter Chiefs thread

Is Dave Walder a decent signing? He seems like he has some good experience.

Is he an attack coach or covering with Hepher going?

So from what I can see the squad for next season is shaping up to look like:

LP: Sio, Goodrick-Clarke, Blose, Burger
HK: Dweba, Yeandle, Heaven, Norey
TP: Painter, Iosefa-Scott, Roots
LK: Jenkins, Tuima, Tshiunza, Zambonin, Pearson
FL: Hooper, Roots, Capstick, Moloney, Bailey
N8: Fisilau, Vintcent, James
SH: Varney, Cairns, Chapman, Becconsall
FH: Skinner, Haydon-Wood, Coen
IC: Tua, Rigg
OC: Slade, Ikitau, Wimbush
WG: Feyi-Waboso, Brown-Bampoe, Wyatt, Woodburn, Hammersley, Lilley
FB: Hodge, John

*Current academy players who have played 1st XV this season in BOLD.

Giving a 1st XV of something like:
1. Sio
2. Dweba
3. Painter
4. Tuima
5. Jenkins (c)
6. Roots
7. Hooper
8. Fisilau
9. Varney
10. Skinner
11. Brown-Bampoe
12. Ikitau
13. Slade
14. Feyi-Waboso
15. Hodge

16. Yeandle
17. Goodrick-Clarke
18. Iosefa-Scott
19. Capstick
20. Vintcent
21. Cairns
22. Tua
23. Wyatt

From 4-8 and 11-15 I reckon that side can mix it with just about anyone in the Prem, but the front row and half backs are still concerning (although Varney will be an upgrade). And unfortunately those are the 2 units most responsible for getting our stronger players good ball to use.

Totally forgot about Goodrick-Clarke. Has he been injured? I thought he was a very solid signing I'd happily have taken at Quins but I don't recall seeing him on any team sheets for you?

What's the story with Wimbush too? Was his injury more long term than anticipated?

Is PBB still academy? He's older than IFW

Edit: Actually just seen he only turned 23 last month, I think starting the season at 22 still means you can be in the academy?

WGC has been having issues with drinking and driving
Will be interesting what Chiefs do, didn't they revoke Nadolo contract due to it?

Mind I think Painter also got done or it

Yep, he's been done for drink driving. Since he wasn't announced on our list of leavers I guess he's being given another chance, but honestly I'm not certain what's going on there.

Painter was done for it while at Northampton.

Everything I can see is that he was on an academy contract this season and there's been no news of him getting upgraded yet, but I'd be very surprised if he isn't senior squad by the time next season kicks off.

Wimbush has been back from injury for a while and has been playing for Exeter Uni. I haven't really seen him play post-injury so don't know what his form's been like but it seems he just isn't favoured at the moment. But then, he is competing with Slade.

From memory, 24 is the cut-off for academy.
Dunno if that's start of season, end of season; or having to change on birthday - or if I'm wrong about it being 24

Blimey, that's pretty old!
Yeah, I remember being pretty surprised.
I suspect that the purpose to to "allow" bringing in a player who was missed at age grade, but found their feet at BUCS, 7s or Champ level - but that's a guess.
ETA: Or maybe an acknowledgement that some positions (prop) simply take longer to mature - especially when professionalism was a new concept vs shamateurism, and no-one's really looked at it since.
Just makes it easier to take a punt on someone if you can plonk them in the academy for a year or two

What about the SH Armstrong? He looked decent young player?

I actually really like this team but FH...hot have we not recruited there? I rate Skinner as a mid level prem flyhalf, I'm happy to have Slade as a back up and sogn an 18 min FH, obv getting them here could be an issue due to our form but it's such a key position.
