Ireland World Cup 2019 Thread aka "Quarter Final 4"

Literally praying for another Henshaw at 15 game, will need cheering up after England bomb out
I'd be near certain he won't start one there, the approach appears to be two specialists plus a guy who can cover in a real bind or against a minnow in a few positions. Prior to injury all rumours suggested it'd be Sexton > Carbery > Cooney, and both Healy > Kilcoyne > Porter and Kearney > Larmour > Henshaw look likely. The second one is maddening considering its obvious to everyone but Joe that Carbery is the better 15 option, I'd even rather have the good Sale recruit there too!

I wonder is Joey Carbery an option as 3rd 9. He was mentioned their in Irish camp a few years ago as a contingency. And well Joey may also be seen now as an extra option at 15 if a 3rd 10 were to travel.

Surprised but there you go.

No doubt a big disappointment - but the constant risk of injuries means he might be back.

I'd say he was being considered there originally but he's probably been ruled out now by injury as he presumably won't be able to train there. Carty probably a decent bet there right now. If three 10s do go it'd be madness for Carbery playing 15 not to be at least considered.

ROG saying Joey Carbery can cover 12 this morning! With Joe saying Ringrose can play wing I reckon the best shout is just play with ten men with those two covering the backs positions.

The rumours are very strong that Carbery is seen as the key man. Carty is set to go too and from the rumours it seems with 9 to leave camp.
Dave Kearney, Jack McGrath, Devin Toner, Rhys Ruddock, Andrew Conway, Ross Byrne, Will Addison, Rob Herring and Luke McGrath have been told it is looking like they will be on stand by. That leaves 1 spot open. I still can't see how we can omit Dev myself but those are the rumours. And believe the lock is still open. And Tommy O'Donnell was not on list but he is behind some so he will not go 100% so Ruddock may be in.

I think leaving Toner back would be a massive (literally) mistake!

100% agree. And as I say may be just a rumour as it's not from solid source. I think Toner is a vital man for set piece.

Rumours too Addison is in trouble injury wise

TBH Addison not sniffing the 31 man squad Coming off a serious injury

With Carberry injury he becomes a luxury player, hence won't be needed

Farrell covers centre well Conway wing + full back

Plus Stockdale can fill in at #15 & Earls at #13

I can see why Toner might get left out

Slow & lumbering in general play Not effective as a ball carrier

He's essentially only a lineout option Kleyn can be TH scrum prop & is a big lump

Henderson can do everything to a high level & Ryan is an established talent

Beirne is best jackeller in entire squad & is an X Factor player

I've heard the Addison rumours as well, given his record it wouldn't surprise me at all. He's talented enough to go and his versatility would be very useful but he hasn't played since January, if he can't get a run out in the warmup he can't be in consideration. Farrell and Conway having big games against Italy can't have helped him either.

On Toner, the only way I can see him not going is if he hasn't gotten back to form after his injury and is looking seriously off the pace and in that case I doubt we'd have dropped Dillanne and gone down to five locks. I'd be very surprised if Joe dropped him for two guys with less than 10 caps between them. I would prefer to see Henderson starting when it comes down to it though.

Can't say I've been convinced by Kleyn so far either, he's a decent player but I think we should be doing better (I'd say we already are and have been for the last two years) if we're serious about this World cup, he's a better version of Quinn Roux but he can't do anything Ryan and Henderson can't while his ball carrying and international (or top level rugby in general) experience really doesn't stack up well compared to them at all, obviously Ryan is young but if he retired now his two-season career would be on a par with or better than the vast majority of Irish rugby players. If we take him I feel like we're not gaining anything and in addition we're sacrificing one of Beirne or Toner both of whom do do things that the other two can't.

Interesting article on how the squad has been developed since 2015 with the gametime of various players. Also found it interesting how certain guys came into their spots. Also compare how constant a guy like best has been to the 7 jersey which in terms of minutes no one exceeds 1000, and injury has caused the jersey to change hands often.

Jaysus, one actual and two potential career ending injuries ****** our backrow hard...

Imagine we had Heaslip and Leavy and could ******* coinnigh Paddy Jack going into this, reckon we'd be hot favourites. 7 is obviously the biggest worry there, the two most talented guys who were in the top three minutes won't play at this and may not play ever again.

What kind of team do people reckon we'll field against the Sassenach this weekend? Hard to know how strong we go. It's probably about time to start momentum building when our.first pool game is the toughest we have.

Sexton, Henshaw and Earl's sat out training yesterday so given Schmidt's usual MO they likely won't be involved.

Murray, Furlong, Stander and Stockdale on media duty.

From that you could make a pretty good guess at something like

Kilcoyne
Cronin (reckon we'll save Best and Scannell got 60 minutes against Italy)
Furlong
Henderson
Kleyn (pretty sure I saw somewhere that Ryan wasn't likely to play but maybe I imagined that)
Stander
Murphy
Conan
Murray
Carty
Stockdale
Aki
Farrell
Conway
Larmour

Which is a decent team, probably won't be good enough go win in Twickenham if Eddie goes full or close to full strength, but could do well otherwise.
