SA vs Wales (June 2022 series)

The WOL are going pretty hard with the SA are disrespecting us stuff. Gareth Edwards coming out now saying they're devaluing the series. I mean, I guess they are but they're probably still favourites so it's not really disrespectful if they smash us is it? Should just wait until after the game, if we win then we can chat some **** but I'd prefer to keep heads down and crack on. To be fair that's what they're doing in camp and I can't imagine Pivac is going to mention anything about disrespect in his press conference tomorrow.

The media will do what they always do: sensationalise for clicks/views. I think this narrative is a helpful one for the boys in red.

Gareth Edwards can say whatever he wants but I'm gonna hold you to a higher standard. Almost half of this 23 was involved in the '19 RWC set-up (either wider squad or called up after injuries) with the remainder kicking ass and taking names at the business end of the URC. Plus Elton's canned - devalued my ass :)

Yeah, You know what, I think I really take more issue with the word "devalued" There's an argument there for disrespect I suppose (though I don't really think SA are being disrespectful and in terms of the players I think there's definitely mutual respect if you look at the games from the last 10 years) but devalued? **** off. I'm still looking forward to the game and there's no way in hell that if we manage to pull off a win that I'll give 2 shits about the team SA have played. I'll be revelling in a hard fought win against a very good side that we've never beaten at their place.

If anything saying SA are devaluing the series is disrespectful to SA. Yeah, you've clearly got an eye on the WC but there's no way in hell you've picked that team thinking you'll lose. You'll be as confident (more so even) as last week. That's what I'd be saying to this SA team. I'd be saying you're getting no respect, Wales think they'll give you a tonking and don't consider you worthy of the series.

@Welsh Exile Exactly. Test rugby is the pinnacle (as is Test cricket but that's another argument) and nobody should be taking it lightly. Got no time for arrogance/over-confidence and love to see it punished by a hiding on the field. I believe every player on that pitch will be earnest and striving to prove themselves/win.

Yea I kinda Understand the Welsh sentiment but all the Saffas know this is a really good squad and the same squad with form players that everyone was calling for, it's like he listened to the fans and just chose a team that most fans would not even dream. I for one think they are going to be good and potentially better than last weekend's team with a much bigger emphasis on speeding up the game and playing some running rugby. Regardless of out opposition this was exactly what competition in the squad needed. Doing it in the middle of the series and not when its already wrapped up will raise the bar for this alternate team and I think they can step it up.

Fassi, Gelant and Arendse will be very dangerous on the Wings and Fullback. I probably think they are more on form than Mapimpi and Kolbe. Both are notoriously difficult to tackle. They will slot into the rest of the backline to support attacking plays.

Esterhuizen and Kriel are both peak physical backs. On form, they should complement each other, rotating carrying duties and providing crash ball for midfield.

Jaden Hendrikse will speed up the game but he is developing nicely into a Faf mould player, he likes to box kick.

The loose trio is the best one we can pick IMO, Kolisi out the match day 23 is a blessing in disguise.

Marvin Orie is probably a weak spot for the team, maybe to a hint also Dweba. I would have played Nortje instead of Orie.

Wales must wait till after the game before they start claiming disrespect. Their former players in the media are disrespecting the players picked for this game, which is a very special time for them and their families.

Pretty much everything I think and then some. I just hope that Pollard is firing and confident. If he's not, the genuine running threat this team has got will be nullified.

Yeah I agree. The bookies have you down as clear favourites still so we're still underdogs at the end of the day.

I hope we see a good game of rugby. Not that I thought last week was a terrible test match, it was certainly dramatic and entertaining but it wasn't great really. You were pretty bad to be fair, and not even that great in the second half either. We were really gutsy but we know that and, again, not exactly pulling up any trees either.

Honestly, I thought we were pretty poor in the last game. Ww scored a good try at the start, and Lake'a try was impressive given we were down to 13 and Biggar's kick to the corner sucked. Othwr than those though, we were gutsy, but generally underwhelming! We kicked most of out posession away, which annoys me endlessly. I can understand not wanting to play in your own half with a ref hot on sealing off at the breakdown, but Biggar also put the ball in the air on 1st or second phase on the Boks 10m line. Wtf is the point of playing North at centre if he only touches the ball twice in attack?

The boys put up a fight, and that was an improvement from the 6n, but imo we lost thay game due to our conservative tactics. People keep telling me that Biggar can play attacking rugby, but on the whole I've watched him play for more than a decade and I still don't see it. He's a warrior and will battle for everything, but an attacking 10 he is not!

I also question the backrow balance with Lydiate and Reffell, neither did much wrong, with Reffell having an impressive debut to be fair. But they are both very much defensive style players. Would Navidi or Basham offer a little more creativity?

I just don't think we're going to beat SA playing conservatively. We won't get a lucky bounce of the ball from a botched lineout this week to help us out!

I'm also not convinced about Orie and I'm saying that as a Stormers fan. I just think we have better option at test level. I'd have started Nortje if I wanted to develop depth and probably from the bench. WOuld feel more comfortable with one of De Jager or Mostert at lock in the absence of Snyman. Happy enough with the front rowers, helluva excited about teh loose forwards!!

The halves are an upgrade as well IMO though we'll have to see what sort of form Pollard is in- surely though can't be worse than Jantjies last week? Back three I am also very excited about Gelant and co. I don't like Willemse at 15. Apart from lock the only place I have question marks really is center though they might do the job. I hear Esterhuizen is in a rich vein of form so we'll see I suppose.

Josh Adams didn't have best game last week but he's the most well balanced winger Wales have so makes sense dropping him......

Coz we have no interest in using our backs outside Biggar. I mean, how many times did Adams actually touch the ball? It's mad to me, Adams has been a top performer of ours even when the team has been crap. He's up there with the best wingers in the world for me. Even that Italy game, for example, not many wingers in world rugby could score that try from the position he was in.

I don't want to dig out Cuthbert to much as he was good in the 6N but replacing either of our wingers for him is wild to me.

Wales team to face South Africa: Liam Williams; Louis Rees-Zammit, George North, Nick Tompkins, Alex Cuthbert; Dan Biggar, Kieran Hardy; Gareth Thomas, Ryan Elias, Dillon Lewis, Will Rowlands, Adam Beard, Dan Lydiate, Tommy Reffell, Taulupe Faletau.

Replacements: Dewi Lake, Wyn Jones, Sam Wainwright, Alun Wyn Jones, Josh Navidi, Tomos Williams, Gareth Anscombe, Josh Adams.

One word..... 'meh'
Good to see Wyn Jones back but I still expect Wales to struggle to create much in attack.

Wales looked far better during Gatland's last 6n capaign with Anscombe starting and Biggar on the bench. Anscombe has of course had an injury nightmare since, but was looking good for the Ospreys at the end of the season. I think installing Biggar as captain has been a big mistake because it's tough to leave him out of the starting IV. Let's hope Anscombe get's an opportunity off the bench this week and maybe Patchell can get soke gametime next week.

I don't know about Anscombe any more these days to be honest. Would definitely like to see him get some minutes or a start next test but I don't think we'll see him get back to where he was.

Obviously it's still early days for him in terms of only recently come back from that horrible ACL injury but what is he now, pushing 32? And with a bust out knee

To be fair, there was one game for the Ospreys towards the back end of last season that had shades of the old Anscombe but yeah, at this level, I'm not so sure.

Honestly think it's criminal that Ioan Lloyd has been frozen out of the last few camps. Even if you don't want to look at him at 10 the fact we don't really have loads of full backs woukd get him in but whatever I suppose. I think he wants to play at 12 moving forward now anyway so bit of a moot point.

Patchell as well, he's just never fit. I like him and hope he gets a crack this tour too but I have my doubts. Just goes back to the why have we neglected Jarrod Evans so much question. It's more criminal than Lloyd as Evans is in his mid 20s and if we had him more involved over the last year or 2 he could've been in the position to rival Biggar.

Biggar is the best 10 we have in the here and now to win us top end test matches imo but we're putting all our eggs in his basket.

Lloyd who plays for Bristol yes? He wants to play 12? I cant see him being a international 12 tbh i may be wrong but still. I actually dont rate him that highly but im sure 15 is his best position.

For selections like Lydiate and Cuthbert are just worrying. Not to say they aren't good players, but it either just smacks of desperation for a win or Pivac is suggesting the alternatives aren't good enough. Honestly Wales and England both seem to be in limbo with both Pivac and Jones clueless about how to fix things.

Yeah he's played everywhere this season. Back 3, 10, 12 and even 9 briefly if I'm not mistaken. I've only seen him play 12 once in that match against the Scarlets and I thought he looked very good (think he got injured in that game)

It would appear this lack of continuity and nailing down a position hasn't helped him, hopefully he can nail down a specialist position or 2 moving forward.

I like him. For sure he's far from the finished product and is still pretty raw but he's got bags of potential and definitely a bit of X factor. I'm not saying he should have 15 caps by now but I would've like to see him involved in camps a lot more. All the talk from Pivac when he got that first call up was that it was looking positive but I guess he's not been happy with his development on his work on's or something. To be fair he has been injured

Will be funny to watch Wales lose to a team which the Welsh media claim devalues the series
