Tri Nations: All Blacks - Springboks @ Westpac Stadium (30-07-2011, 07:35 GMT)

To be fair that's not an awful Boks side
I don't know a lot about that tight 5 (bar Smit) though

Yeah better than last week's team imo.

On the tight 5:

1) Dean Greyling: A genuine man-mountain this guy. Relatively new to the scene (Super Rugby at least) who's stamped his foot down at the Bulls with Guthro Steenkamp being injured.
3) Werner Kruger: Been 'there abouts' for a few seasons now but never chosen for the Boks. Him and WP Nel seemed to be in the same boat. Not an obvious favourite here but the Bulls fans rate him. The rest of us are content.
4) Gerhard Mostert: Was in PdV's extended squad back in 2008 so he saw potential in him awhile back. I rate him too. He really came into his own in the S14 and played some storming games towards the end of the competition. Has been plagued by injuries so has not put a full season in awhile.
5) Alistar Hargeaves: I was so on the fence with this guy when he first came on the scene but now I rate him at S14 level. Has added more physicality to his game recently. Was apparently very good at with the Baby Boks. Very much a lineout specialist.

A very brief sum up but I would say most Saffas would just be content with these guys. They're all competent provincial players.

Is Ranger injured? I most certainly hope so. Also, Todd should be there instead of Messam. I'm not such a fan of him

Ranger isn't injured, he just isn't rated by the AB selectors as one of the top 8 wings/fullbacks in the country.

PDV has officially changed the teamsheet, making Morne Steyn the fullback and Lambie fly-half

Been training that way whole week, so it was bound to happen

It's sad that it needs an injury (for Aplon) to bring Lambie into the starting line-up. I hope Morne Steyn just does his place-kicking and doesn't run with the ball!!!

So Lambie will run out with 10 on his back then? Has Steyn ever played FB hes a bit slow for it no?

Steyn started as a 15 for the Bulls when he first played Super rugby.

As far as this game goes, I think we will do very well to lose by less than 30. This All Blacks team is going to annihilate us physically. Although, with Lambie and Jacobs in the team, I think we will be slightly more potent in attack.

All Blacks 55-14 Springboks

From what I've heard, we are playing with Jacobs and de Jongh in midfield. That is much better than Olivier...

With Deysel at 7 and Rossouw at 8 we have a bit more physicality up front too...

Steyn started at fullback for the Bulls in 2008 when Derick Hougaard was still no.1 flyhalf for the Bulls.

he didn't do too bad and he quoted that with him at the back and knowing Carter's plans for tactical kicking, he might be a good switch for counter attacks... (i suspect to run back, kick an up and under and let master Basson chase it down and recover the ball like he did all season for the bulls)...

also looking forward to see Pienaar and Lambie reunite in the pivot roles... maybe we'll have some more fluency...

Teams:

All Blacks: 15 Mils Muliaina 14 Cory Jane 13 Conrad Smith 12 Ma'a Nonu 11 Zac Guildford 10 Daniel Carter 9 Jimmy Cowan 8 Adam Thomson 7 Richie McCaw (captain) 6 Jerome Kaino 5 Ali Williams 4 Samuel Whitelock 3 Ben Franks 2 Andrew Hore 1 Wyatt Crockett
Substitutes: 16 Corey Flynn 17 John Afoa 18 Jarrad Hoeata 19 Liam Messam 20 Piri Weepu 21 Colin Slade 22 Sonny Bill Williams

Springboks: 15 Morné Steyn , 14 Bjorn Basson, 13 Adi Jacobs, 12 Juan de Jongh, 11 Lwazi Mvovo, 10 Patrick Lambie, 9 Ruan Pienaar, 8 Danie Roussow, 7 Jean Deysel, 6 Deon Stegmann, 5 Alistair Hargreaves, 4 Gerhard Mostert, 3 Werner Kruger, 2 John Smit (captain), 1 Dean Greyling

Substitutes: 16 Chiliboy Ralepelle, 17 CJ van der Linde, 18 Ryan Kankowski, 19 Ashley Johnson, 20 Charl McLeod, 21 Wynand Olivier, 22 Odwa Ndungane

Steyn at fullback blows any chance of a counterattack from All Blacks kicks.
How about they call up an actual fullback, who has performed well all season?

I don't have much confidence in the replacement backs, who wants to trust McLeod in the unfortunate event of an early injury to Ruan?

Just to echo what's said above, Steyn isn't.....the best of runners.... at 10, so to have him at 15 suggests the Boks are going to boot all ball away
Return to 07 tactics, to try and limit damage?
Don't think it'll work with the counter attacking force that is the All Blacks...

I don't think a try will be scored through our backline though. With Deysel and Rossouw we have massive strength in our scrumpack, which might give us the upper hand. So nice to see Potgieter subbed. Kanko on the bench to cover other positions besides 8 I guess.

I am happy with the center-pairing of Juan de Jongh and Adi Jacobs

If they are relying on kicking, they've got to be perfect and the chase has got to be in the NZ back 3's faces the moment the ball is caught.

Not sure about Jacobs starting either. No doubt it is better than Olivier, but I think Adi is best used as an impact sub.
I think I'd prefer Francois Steyn at 15 over Morne. They both have a big boot, while Francois can at least attack the line.
Is Francois one of the injured, or just not involved?

Yeah he's recovering from an ankle injury... they really could've taken Riaan Viljoen on this tour for Fullback...

but Morne does have a purpose as I mentioned before... with Bjorn Basson chasing his kicks down, if it works, will be very effective...

but with that being said i have a strong suspicion that we'll use Lambie with the inside ball with Deysel, Rossouw and Greyling stampeding through...

Morne Steyn will be starting at fullback!!!! hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha:lol::lol: :lol:You've got one of the worst defenders and THE LEAST creative player playing fullback! ABs gonna score so many tries as Morne will up and under just about every catch he makes, allowing Muliaina, Jane and Guildford to run amok. Everyone, read what I just said and remember it during tomorrow's game so that I can say I told you so! Watch, Morne up and unders, Mils, Jane or Guildford counter-attack and try!

Morne Steyn is going to play well IMO, because he has just been put over a hot fire with SA switiching him out of 10. If he does not play well there, then this could be an issue for his RWC spot... so it is all on him to lay it on the line and have a good game.

How can he play well when all he does is kick up-and-unders? He offers nothing on attack and is a shocking defender. He is so uncreative and can't break a tackle. All he's going to do is kick up-and-unders down Muliaina's throat. I'll gladly take a bet with you on Morne's performance

hey man... i was thinking last night.....
PDV initail setup was lambie on fullback and steyn on flyhalf....

then for some strange reason i see dan carter make a comment on how he praizes lambie... and how good lambie is... and that lambie is not 1-dimentional as steyn (not said in so many words).....

then all of a sudden i see PDV swop the 2 around.... :?

i wonder if it wasn't tactics from the AB side and that PDV fell for it :?

steyn for me is just weak... has always been... will always be... only thing keeping him in this team is his goal kicking ability... well for me atleast... the idiots in SA rugby pick him cuz of his expericen bla bla bla...

Steyn is like Naas "Lass" Botha... you only bring him on to take a shot at goal... and take him off again... weak....
