South Africas sports minister hits out against quota system

I agree that the current quota system is shallow and bluntly discriminatory.
Thrusting "colourful" players through the ranks with the "fake it till you make it" mentality is never gonna work. Ever, for anything.

Not only that but the way the ANC is implementing it is not holistic and there is an obvious agenda being served.
Where is the other races representation? Why are Indians and other Asians not part of this demographic representation pursuit? Weren't gays also repressed? Should we add them as well? Amputees have also been given the short stick in life (no pun intended). Should we represent all of these previously disadvantaged groups?

No of course not, once you look at the the reality of the situation makes it quite easy. It's a bit silly pushing this type of system when you pick and choose to suit one race group. According to the ANC the Beast doesn't apply to be qualified to be a quota player, because he's from Zim. Xenophobia much? Also do most Indians have any interest in rugby? I come from KZN and I only played against 1 Indian EVER, and that team was from Stanger mind you.
Nope, the most sporty things Indians are interested in is deciding whether to support Man Utd or Liverpool, and choosing which one of their 7 Ferrari jackets they gonna wear with their gelled up hair to the Suncoast Casino. ;) (Tongue in cheek, Durbanites will get it)
The ANC is a racist, sexiest, xenophobic government that is hellbent on repeating the same fundamental mistakes the Apartheid government made. Legislating racial policies.

Everybody and their dog knows that grassroots is where the effort should be. There is a huge imbalance in SA, society and sport wise. Everybody knows that. And if someone had a solution to the problem they would be given the Nobel Peace Prize and the reward would be retired forever.
Fingering whites for the inequality problems we face today is as useful as fingering blacks for not having the wheel pre-colonialism.
It's unconstructive and irrelevant for present day South Africa.

Lets use our resources and efforts to target the root of the problem. Not at discrimination. You're never gone get anywhere bring one race down to bring another up. The government and national organisations seem to be getting this lately if the media is too be believed.

Now now, I realize some people say Malema and Zuma and quite handsome, but I certainly wouldn't call them the 'sexiest' government around ;)

Long time no post, eh?

I love playing against Indians, they are either a big blob in the front row, and as soft as the inside of a potato samoosa. Or its a really small, skinny guy playing in the backs. Bliss :D

The problem with a quota system is that it is EXACTLY the same as Apartheid. You are just not allowed to say so in South Africa because it will make you racist. When you judge people because of their skin color, it's racist, end of story. For years the white population had it easy and the whole world was against South Africa, going as far as boycotting planes flying in their airspace, forcing them to, for instance, fly around the African continent for a flight to Europe. Ridiculous.

When the time came to end Apartheid, things were looking bright. The RWC came to South Africa and the whole illusion of one nation, one union was echoing across the world.

Now, 17 years later, we are in a situation where Apartheid once again takes control over South Africa, this time to the advantage of black people, but Apartheid nonetheless. Why is the world not judging it now I wonder? The rest of the world is ignorant when it comes to nowadays politics in Africa. The situation in South Africa is exactly the same as Zimbabwe, just 15 years behind. Things might not turn out as bad as Zimbabwe now, but there is a chance things will slowly but surely go that way. A quota system, BEE (the biggest bullshit in the world!!!)... All things that will kick the country back 20 years in development.

When I was living in South Africa, I applied for a job, but because of BEE, a black guy got the job. I don't have a problem with that, IF the guy is qualified and suited for the job. I work in IT and it was a position as IT Manager at a mine close to Phalaborwa and the guy who got the job didn't even know how to install a HP printer! That situation was a perfect example how a quota system and BEE can be abused and hurt a country. If the guy could just do his job properly, I would be happy to be rejected in favour of him, but things just don't go that way anymore.

When it comes to sports, ANC should realize that there is more at stake than just equity in Rugby. It's turned into a sport where big bucks are made.

To top it all off, like steve-o said, it's totally utter bullshit that Tendai Mtawarira doesn't qualify as a quota player because he is from Zimbabwe, xenophobia galore! I thought the quota system was to give black people a fair chance. Last time I checked, Mtawarira is black. The fact that he is from Zimbabwe, doesn't matter at all. It just shows you that the quota system will never work.
