Wimbledon

I'm not really a big Tennis watcher outside of Wimbledon in the background but that was excellent and was good to see Alcaraz give Forgnini all the props and respect post-match, he deserved them.

Brit watch:
Cam through, Boulter and Tarvet out and Emma on atm.

Evans v he who Must not be named and Draper v Cilic tomorrow

Went today via the queue. Got in the line at 4:45 and was ~4.2k in the queue and by 8am they had shut the queue to any newcomers arriving. Line is wild this year. Day out was pretty decent, but don't think I'll be doing that any time soon unless I get luck in the ballot.

The first time I joined the queue at Wimbledon was after finishing my GCSEs, I remember me and my mates got there first around 11am and we didn't get in until 5pm. Learnt from that.

The other thing is to go really late ie join at around 4pm and then by then peeps have had enough after a long day and start leaving. One time got lucky and some old gentleman gave us his 2 tickets for court 1 as he was leaving. Got to see James Blake IIRC.

Never tried camping out the night before though as they release 500 tickets for the show courts.

But yes, otherwise it comes down to getting lucky in the ballot, joining a tennis club to get tickets or ticket master. But they only release a few tickets and they get snapped up immediately.

problem is it's become way more popular, especially closer to the weekends. Yesterday no one that joined the queue after 8am were allowed to even join the queue. Joining for evening queueing is not a thing as a result also. People that arrived at 6am yesterday were queue number 10k. Joining at 11am on Wednesday when it was quieter you maybe had a chance getting in, but at 8pm

Evening queueing is not a thing because of the popularity, but even the show court ticketing is a mess. You sign up for resale in a digital queue to get one of the main courts, but this relies on people who leave the main courts to scan their tickets when they exit - which many don't do. This is why you are seeing so many empty seats on the main court in the evening games on tv (e.g. Raducanu last night) - loads of people on the hill who would want the ticket, but no way to get it, and no way for someone leaving to just give a ticket to someone as they leave as it is all digital.

Also it's 1500 for the show courts in the queue, with 500 for centre court, but for Saturday - at 8am on Friday there were already over 500 people. I think by 11am there was already over 1.5k for the next day.

I just quickly checked the queue megathread to see how today is going and it is worse than yesterday. Someone arriving at 4:55am is number 6.3k. Looks like they closed the queue for the day around 7/7:30am. Just wild.

Yeh I haven't queued up for a while, this was going back last decade and before. I wouldn't queue now just to sit on the hill with a an off chance of a ticket. Before they went digital those public ballot forms were an absolute pain in the butt to fill in every year.

This is the issue with Wimbledon it attract fans for these two weeks of the year and then there's no interest in it apart from the hardcore fans who follow tennis the rest of the year. They're trying to expand the grounds, but surprise, surprise the local residents object.

Only two Brits left in the draw but it'll still be popular.

Now only 1 Brit left in Norrie. But he faces Alcaraz next.

Electronic line call failed for 1 game in the Kartal match. How did the umpire just not call it out when it was a good 6inches behind the line?

Such a shame - Dimitrov 2 sets up and really outplaying the world number 1 and then tears his pec after serving and has to retire.

From Naomi Broady on bbc sister of Liam.

Now we're post Murray and Brits are all out. Jack was a disappointment and even more so
As Cobolli knocked out Cilic and is seeded lower than Jack.

Emma - well I don't think it was any surprise her losing to Sabalenka. She's found a good coach in Petchy, hope she keeps him.

Norrie and Kartal - were the furthest the Brits got but neither were realistically contenders.

It's like normal service has been resumed.
We've had Henman and Murray, borrowed Rusedski for a bit; but otherwise we'd be lucky if a Bates or Dury made the 2nd week once every 3 Wimbledons between them

Had high hopes for Jack. Seeded 4, but lost to consecutive players at past 2 Slams he really should be beating. I think hard courts still his best surface so USO is a better shot at getting further. He may even push Alcaraz to 5 on it should the two meet.

Otherwise on men's side difficult to see past Sinner/Alcaraz, who are monopolising the majors atm. He who shall not be named still there at 38. Of the two semis that is the one I am looking forward to most.

Ladies - I think it's pointing towards a Sabalenka v Swiatek final. Iga playing her forehand a lot better on grass but still can miss with it.

In terms of score line and intensity for sure. I don't think the women's game has the variety of the men's game. Lack of coming in and volleying at the net is an issue not ending the point sooner.

Sabalenka's game plan consists of: grunt loud and hit hard. If that doesn't work grunt even louder and hit even harder. And she's world number 1. Her unforced error rate when she gets stressed goes through the roof.

Don't get the Beeb in Ireland for Wimbledon so listening to Andre Agassi. Very insightful and hilariously chaotic on comms.

First set looked like this would be a walk in the park but Fritz has Alcaraz rattled a wee bit here.

Edit: Nevermind, Alcaraz is up there with Mondo and Ringrose as dominant and entertaining asf athletes right now.

Great first semi. Yeh Andre was very funny and insightful. A lot better than dull Castle - I wish he would shut up.

Fritz surprised me with his level. It just wasn't quite enough to beat Carlos, who could up his level when it mattered.

Onto second semi. Jannick breaks first. I do think he should be beating Novak at this point of his career especially being world number 1 and 15 years Novak's junior. Time to retire him.

Novak looked very old last night as he got taken to the cleaners. I think he realises now his body can't take 7 bo5 matches to win another slam.

And another Sinner v Alcaraz final. If it gets anywhere near their last one we're in for a treat.

Yeah, comm.s were right yesterday - he's at that Federer stage where he can beat anyone but the top 2.
To win a slam, he needs to beat both of them; or pray that someone else takes them out.

Unlike Federer though, he doesn't seem to be enjoying this phase

He said in his post match interview he wants to play at least one last Wimbledon, so expect him to be around for at least another year.

But I think he just realises his body can't take 7 bo5 matches anymore especially if it means beating Sinner and then Alcaraz back to back.

Roger's knee ultimately decided it for him and for Rafa and Andy their bodies also told them they couldn't compete like they used to.

Like them Novak should go out on his own terms. He may not be the most loved champion, but he'll end his era with the most Majors. Well, until Sinner and Alcaraz are ready to surpass it. 🤔
