I dunno how much shift actually happens (see Cleggmania) but I can see his personal approval ratings going up. Its hideously low for someone who actually is fairly innocuous.

Sunak does nothing but regurgitate tired old soundbytes which even die hard Tories struggle to believe. Literally his only real avenues to try to come out on top are:

• Say it would be worse under Labour and flat out refuse to expand on how or why
• Accuse Starmer of flip flopping and being indecisive whilst ignoring the repeated U-turns the Tories have done
• Say Labour will bring chaos and hope everyone has forgotten that the Truss Premiership was probably the single most chaotic and useless term in centuries for the time she had and forget the Tories have been through 4 PMs in 5 years, along with god knows how many cabinet ministers
• Say they are the party to change things, hoping everyone forgets they've been in power for 14 years and pretty much everything that is going wrong now is on their shoulders.

Essentially they've got to play to the people who fear things being different and the people who have had their heads in the sand. I can understand political differences and different world views but I really can't understand how someone with even right wing views can look at the Tories now and think they are fit to govern.

The national service thing is just another sign how ****** they are. No party seriously contemplating governement would suggest it. They'll be suggesting bring back the death penalty next.

It's not as far fetched as you think. When I was living in Europe in the 90s (as a squaddie) most European countries had "national service" it normally involves a lottery system which will push you into the military or public service of some sort for a year. This sounds like that kind of system as opposed to the old school national service of the 50s.

It meant that all school leavers got to understand a bit of what goes on in the public sector and learn a few self reliance skills on the way. It wasn't a bad system to fair and often engaged more people into public life at an early age.

Not saying it would work here as I don't think the current government have the funds to pay for it.

Less the idea that possibly doesn't have some merits. But the fact this more about the narrative of lazy feckless kids and somehow the military toughens you up. That isn't to argue its not fulfilling for some people just that it isn't for everyone.

I would recommend listening to Lewis Goodall's interview with James Cleverly on LBC this morning (Sunday) @10AM. It was excellent and they discussed the National Service proposal.

Cleverly suggested it was an attempt to bring communities together, get young people from different backgrounds to integrate and understand different classes of society.

Lewis pointed out that all age ranges tended to not integrate with people from different backgrounds and why were they not making it compulsory for retired people to take up National Service and volunteering.

And you can bet that no Tory cabinet ministers kids are going to serve in the rank and file. Yes I get it, my point was this was actually quite a common thing in Europe and did have it's merits.

Unfortunately military service is a young persons game. Yes there's a few roles where you might be ok 55 plus but retirement age 66 plus no way. MP's wise the majority with some form of military service including Cleverly are Conservative with a couple from Labour.

Labour only care about young people as that's more likely where there vote is. Same with the Tory party and the retired population.

Neither party is willing to look at triple lock pensions or the child benefit cap, tuition fees. Which really could be used to help younger people.

I'm not a big military guy but I think, at this stage, this is undeniable.
