Is Teague any relation to Mike?

Hawkins has 5 days to prove he signed for Exeter before his first cap otherwise it's no WC for him. I can't imagine he'll be a happy camper but I'm sure he'll get over it.

I reckon that's 62 players in total. How much game time, in whatever competition, are some of those going to get?

Pirates announced their dual-registered players and I was pleasantly surprised to see that Tuima wasn't one of them. Hopefully means that Baxter's planning for him to get a good bit of game time in the Prem this season. It's about time really.

Tommy Wyatt was another notable absentee.

This is part of the financial problems with the whole Prem.
Maximum squad sizes of 35-40, with all academy players farmed out to Championship clubs, paid 50:50 between 2 clubs.
Would also mean smaller squads for Championship and stronger squads.

tbf that's what Chiefs have there - senior squad of 42 plus 20 academy players

42 is probably a little high (35-38 I'd say is the sweet spot - that's a first choice 23 and a backup for each position) but you look down that list and it's not like they're front loading with A-Listers, a lot of senior players are very recent academy grads

So, the academy players should be 'farmed out' to Championship and league 1 clubs to get experience, rathet than heing 'stocked' at Chiefs, costing money.
An arrangement should be in place to be playing for other clubs, with them pucking up some of the costs.

They do,
Every club sends their players away - at Sale we send players to Caldy, Sale FC and Fylde
Chiefs have players out at Cornish Pirates and presumably lower level clubs too

So why have the 20 academy players on the squad list.
The Premiership could have a limit of 35 players, with replacements from the academy only on long term injury.
Those injured players can also rehabilitate at the farm club. But the total maximum named squad size would be 35.
In the NFL, they have a squad size of 56 with 46 in a matchday squad.
They also have a practice squad of 12 players, who can only come in to replace a long term injured players.

Why would you want to limit premiership exposure for academy players?

The Currys, Rodd, Ashman, Roebuck, carpenter, Quirke all became first team players while in the academy
Same story with every club in the country - would Chessum be England's starting lock if he wasn't allowed to play for Tigers while in the academy?

Same goes for Marcus Smith and in fact the majority of Quins' academy products.

I wouldn't have thought Saracens are any different.

Really not sure what relevance NFL squad structures have to do with a completely different sport?

The whole point of the DR system is to maximise the game time that EAPs are able to get while minimising admin / paperwork. Adding an extra level of bureaucracy would be a backward step IMO. Whose interest is it in to force an academy player who isn't ready for top-level rugby to play it?

When rugby has comparable budgets to the NFL and a conveyor belt of talent like the collegiate system produces, maybe rugby can start to try to emulate the way that they run squads.

@Pieter Steph du Teague what is our team looking like for the start of the season?

Is it just me or the start of season looking quite bleak in terms of squad depth? Or departures to signings have quite 1 sided.

Losing Grey Jenkins Tshiunza Slade doesnt help but still thats less than other some teams have international wise.

NFL also doesn't develop their own talent and moves players in and out as they get injured. I don't know if it's the roster rules I'd want to emulate if you want to have talent going to England rep teams.
