The Biking thread

Pedestrian absolutely should have checked before stepping out.
Cyclist is going too fast, and should anticipate that a pedestrian may try to cross the street at a pedestrian crossing, without waiting for the lights, given that the cars are stationary. I'd add that there's no need for the cyclist to be hugging the curb - s/he's got an entire bus lane they could be occupying, giving them room to manoeuvre if the unexpected happens - like a pedestrian using a pedestrian crossing.

Pedestrian is at fault for not checking, cyclist absolutely should have been able to anticipate that this could happen.

Yesterday I was riding out in a quiet residential street. Undertook primary as I passed a crossroads as you should and still got close passed by a delivery rider on his moped from behind. Reported and will see what action, if any, police will take. Awareness course would suffice.

Shortly after a cyclist emerged from another junction and I had to ring my bell and tell him to watch it to stop him crossing my path and almost cause a collision. Again just didn’t look before emerging. So anticipation is a key skill in this situation.

I am on a 40k tomorrow morning, I try to get out at 6am to avoid as much of this BS as possible.

FTR reporting the delivery driver is a waste of time, a huge amount of them use differing ID'S bikes are usually registered randomly etc...

I had a bump with one on my motorbike last year, I was sat at the lights, he skidded into me in the wet as he was stopping on his moped, no insurance, had a fake ID, bike was registered elsewhere lol.

About 5 doors down from me, family moved out and 5 young Asian guys moved in, 4 of which are sweethearts, help the elderly neighbour with her bins, they chat, and 1 knocked my door to let me know my car lights were left on (1s a little **** i chased down the street for calling my GF a whore for running to the car in my vest and short shorts lol).

I was chatting to them recently, all 5 deliver food, use 2 mopeds and split the days to share them. They all use the same ID to set up the account, and share the bank account etc. Funnily, their Deliveroo ID is Jessica, small attractive blonde woman lol. They joked that all riders do this as tips are much higher!

Good neighbours, the 2 boys who work nights even push the bike to end of the street late at night to not wake everyone up bless them. Point is, they know this won't last long, they're are planning on working as much as possible until caught then move cities, but if they get into an accident, they just run.

I am aware, but don't report and certainly nothing gets done. This delivery company has various branches in and around north London. They don’t respond then they get fined/ owner gets the 6 points on their license for not responding. It’s probably very common.

These delivery riders almost never have a CBT or get an initial one and never renew and just think wearing an L plate will allow them to keep riding.

As an aside on the same ride a highway maintenance van was blocking a dropped kerb to access a shared path. Captured the number plate and noticed damage on the passenger side. Checked the number plate later and it turns out it registered as SORN and no MOT. Reported to my local council but checked later that day and it's no longer there.

So spent my trip back to the UK in London. After leaving the station we cross at least 1 major junction if not 2 depending on the station.

So far based on a rough estimate 95% of the time probably more cyclists have gone straight through red lights while pedestrians are crossing. The worst was one guy going full speed and weaving through a large group of pedestrians crossing. Now I know bikes are less dangerous than cars, but it's not the point. They risk injuring people and I can see why many of the public are ****** off by them. It's not a few, it's the majority and they will cause accidents by continually doing what they do. Certainly for me, it's had a very negative impact on my view of cyclists in London.

Really common, but all you'll get is but it's not dangerous, cars are more dangerous. Look how many cyclist's kill pedestrians vs cars etc, etc.
But it’s true. A dick on a bike will do a lot less damage than a dick in car. Doesn’t make it right but a dick on a bike is more visible when they are being dicks and society hates and blames them more. They’ve been brainwashed into motor-normativity.

Personally I think cycling has made me a better driver. Peeps should try it but obviously ride responsibly.

Had a near incident today. Idiot riding on the pavement then goes onto the road through a red light just as people were starting to cross and nearly collided with this couple next to us. Lucky I saw him and held my daughter's hand otherwise it could have been her.

It might be true but equaly they don't have insurance and unlikely to end up with three points and a fine.

I've not met one cyclist who can justify why they do it. I've seen the arguement used, it's safer, it's ok to proceed if there's nobody there.

I have insurance on my bike and risk 3 points and a fine if I don’t adhere to the HWC. I also follow the rules because I understand to ride with due care and attention and consideration for other road users. Other dicks who break the rules don’t. This is sadly a society issue reflected not just with cyclists.

As I said before cyclists are not one homogeneous group. I am not responsible for other cyclists behaviour.

Sadly there are 50 types of cyclists, 45 of them are law abiding courteous riders... the others are professional arseholes.

I was driving through some Cornwall lanes a few days ago, 3 of them riding siding by side, not only creating a line behind them, but attempting to force oncoming traffic to pull in. Yes they were all wearing the same style team lycras.

And they risk their own lives and impact on drivers who knock them off. Selfish impatient Cnuts. But the world is full of them unfortunately. But always said that they still do less damage than a driver in 1.5t of metal who run red lights than a twat on a bike doing so.

Already established that registration is not the answer so unfortunately just have to suck it up and if you do cycle then stop at red lights and ride with due care and attention.

I'll put my hands up, I was in a rush the other day, traffic was horrendous and I jumped a light. Noone was moving in any direction...

The cycling group guy explained it was relatively low risk and cars are more of a problem. Which tbh seems to be the standard response.

But, but cars do more damage to pedestrians is what aboutery at it's finest.

Red lights at 2am in the morning in my village or with no pedestrians crossing are low risk in my car. I still stop funnily enough.
