New Zealand Maori v Ireland - Friday 18th (19.35 NZ/8.35 Irish) - Rotorua Int Stad

Henry isn't too small, just like Niall Ronan isn't too small. However, Henry does not have enough power to be an international number eight, and Ronan does not have enough power to be an international backrow. Size and Power are different things.

im sure court will love it
well you need to develop at bit whats the point of taking 33 year old neil best or 35 year old alan quinlan who will never win a cap again or break in a 19 year old with bags of potential
i thought fionn carr should ave gone but he could be a defensive liability and down under against horsea gear id rather have horgan against him for defense as nether r gonna get past or burn gear

Lads I think Niall Ronan will be suited to this game. It'll suit his game style so wouldn't worry and well I glad it a little bit on inexperienced side as maybe some guys will know expectations are low so might go out and express and impress

Alan Gaffney has said Ireland will try and keep the ball in hand as much as possible (like in the second half vs NZ) due to the new law interpretations, so this will definitely suit Ronan.

horgan may be getting back on track and form but horsea gear should be in the ab squad if not starting im a big fan of shaggy but if he shoes gear any space he is stuffed but if he gets a hand on gear i thing shear size will bring gear down
our front five domminate???? wow iv never actually seen a build up to an ireland game where thats been said

brady or kyriacou you serious?? mabey kyriacou as an outside chance but nigle brady will never and should never go on tour
i really want tuhoy to become the next ireland second row i think he is quality
henry is like wilson i think solid hard worker but unspectacular hes never going to be a wallace of heaslip
im still in shock an irish front five favorites whats the maori front five like?

Not too sure about this call.. This isn't Rico Gear we're talking about, he might be able to be stopped if Horgan gets an arm in the way. Hosea Gear is 2 inches shorter than Horgan but he would be about the game weight, its all muscle too. If anyone gets a stray hand on Gear they are more likely to have the thing ripped off than bring him down!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OCjJWXfaXTI I couldn't find much of him on youtube but this little clip at least shows how big he is.

The Maori tight 5 will be very interesting, the lineup i would go for would be;

1)Clint Newland- This guy is 6'5 and 130kg. He is an enforcer in every sense of the word, hes a grizzly, no-nonsense character who gained cult status by knocking out Neemia Tialata in the ANZC (Lets just say if Newland was in Mealamu's position when Heaslip started throwing the knees, Jamie would be out of all rugby, and probably chewing solid food, for longer than 5 weeks.) His scrummaging technique has been found wanting lately though and he doesn't get around the field too well, not a great footballer really.
2)Corey Flynn- Hes an All Black, only in the Maori to get some gametime under his belt back from injury
3)Ben Afeaki- At 6'4cm and 130kgs this guy is another monster, he has shown better technique than Newland but hes only young though and quite inexperienced
4)Hayden Triggs- A New Zealand army soldier, hes 6'7, 109kg and plays a good tight game, has very good skills at lineout time aswell.
5)Isaac Ross- Was a a revelation at this time last year for the All Blacks based on his amazing allround skillset, he could probably play in the backs with a bit of training. That isn't necessarily a good thing though as he often plays too loose to the detriment of the team. With a 6'7 115kg frame its not like he doesn't have the build to play things tighter.
or
5)Jared Hoeata- At 6'5 and 110kg he isn't really built to play lock, truth be told he is a loose forward that merely covers the position but he does all the basic facets of the game well, hes solid and hardworking. He is a former NZ sevens rep though so hes capable of footing it with the backs in the loose. He also happens to be an absolute mongrel, known for being a very aggressive player on the field and isn't a stranger to a street brawl off it.

The tactics i would choose for the team would be to try and get rough and physical early, try and intimidate the opposition pack (I would be fair ******** myself if i was Rhys Ruddock anyway). If the Maori can gain parity at scrumtime and get enough ball so that Gear, McAllister, Robinson and Maitland can get some space, then they should be away laughing.

oh dear i thought by horseas speed he wuld be smaller
horgans scwered

Didn't have Gear picked for a 100kg player either, Horgan still has 5 kilos on him but as I said earlier Power > weight so Horgan could well be screwed.

I'll be honest, I know little about the Maori tight 5 apart from Isaac Ross because of his run in the AB's and his controversial dropping and the like, so I'm going basing my oppinions on what various kiwis are saying about the Maori tight 5. They could be awesome for all I know.

Ireland's scrum should be good, Court is our best scrummaging front row but offers little else, Horan and Fogs are solid.

Was it in the AIs where Horgan had an absolute shocker? I can't remember exactly what happened, but i think a ball bounced over his head, and he went back to collect it so slowly the opposition got a try from it

that was against clemont in the h-cup. I think the squad is quite good in considering the available players however I feel we lack a bit of power and strengthin especially in the backs. Personally I think Horgan could have a bit of trouble with gear but if he can just mark him and get the support from his team. This is a great oppourtunity for Court to show his strengths. I think the set peice could be very good and I think are organisation could be key to keeps us one step a head of the moari. The bench may prove pivital once again this bench will really give Ireland a edge however I hope Kidney isn't forced to use many subs. Very glad to see murphy as captain he will have a big job come friday.

I agree that Horgan is too slow and not good enough anymore for International rugby. But well if we think of alternatives (Hurley, Carr, Dowling) there isn't a massive amount of alternatives.
I think it is probably the best we have in terms of availability but well we can take it Hayes is starting next week , Buckley is on bench.
Still think this is a massive test for Tuohy and Henry as well this will be more like an International test as opposed to the Baa Baas game.

i still think his defense makes him a better choice than carr
i personaly think carrs a liability
hurley i dont htink is up to the challenge and dowling the same its quite sad where back with shaggy great player but past it

I don't think the Maori will struggle that much at scrum-time - they did struggle during the first half against the Baba's, but the Baba's did have an exceptionally huge from row, while the Maori scrum did improve as the game went on. I think the Irish may have a slight edge, but shouldn't completely dominant this aspect of play.

Unlike Ranger, I have think the Maori should stick with Brosnan Murray at loose-head prop, though I would be tempted to drop him simply because of the incredibly stupid penalty he game away which almost cost the Maori the game (I mean seriously if the ref tells you at least twice to get your hands off the ball, you probably should take your hands off the ball!). He did however have a reasonable season for the Highlanders, while the only other specialist loosehead in the squad, Jacob Ellison, is probably the worst scrummaging prop in the Super 14. I feel Newland and Afeaki are really specialist tightheads, so wouldn't want to start one at loosehead. If I was selecting the tight-five I'd select: 1. Murray 2. Flynn 3. Afeaki 4. Graham 5. Triggs. Though I'm nowhere near convinced about Graham I just like his aggressive attitude (and is reputed to be a strong scrummager as well), and I'd go with the 5/2 split on the bench including both Ross and Hoeata.

How are the Maori being used? Are they purely a development team with certain qualification rules or are they truely representitive of an aspect of New Zealand culture that's being neglected? I get the impression that it's the former more and more these days, especially with the scrapping of the Junior All Blacks.

Maori side named: 15 Robbie Robinson, 14 Sean Maitland, 13 Dwayne Sweeney, 12 Luke McAlister, 11 Hosea Gear, 10 Stephen Brett, 9 aaron Smith, 8 Colin Bourke, 7 Tanerau Latimer, 6 Liam Messam (captain), 5 Jarrad Hoeata, 4 Hayden Triggs, 3 Ben Afeaki, 2 Corey Flynn, 1 Bronson Murray. Reserves: 16 Dane Coles, 17 Clint Newlands, 18 Romana Graham, 19 Karl Lowe, 20 Ruki Tipuna, 21 Willie Ripia, 22 Jackson Willison.

Five changes made from last week - really happy with 4/5 of them! Really good to see Afeaki start - the scrum improved last week once he came on. Hoeata ahead of Ross is another good choice as he will actually play like a forward - I was 50/50 whether I would select him or Graham at lock. Interesting to see Isaac Ross doesn't even make the bench!

I assume Smylie must be injured, but I think Aaron Smith is a better choice even if Smylie was fit. The only change I don't like is Sweeney in for Willison, as I really don't rate his distribution skills. Despite this I'm pretty confident of a Maori win with this team.

Ah come on Conal, Alan Quinlan hasn't been 25 yo for 14 years now. I agree with all the other points you make. What do you think about Duffy at 13? I'm sure McFadden will go to the WC instead though.

Thats pretty close to the team i predicted, I don't think you could carry both Ross and Graham on the bench because that would leave Lowe out of the picture completely and he is in the All Blacks frame. I'm not at all happy with Murray starting, i thought he had a ****-poor season at the highlanders, and the crusaders before that. His scrummaging is pretty poor, i wouldn't think that Ellison would be much worse than him in the department, but unlike Ellison, Murray is no good around the field. Clint Newland has played a hell of a lot of top level football at loosehead, he played there exclusively for 4 years for Hawkesbay. I think the Coaches realise this as they have him as the prop cover for both sides. They really should have gone for Newland at 1, unless they are intending to inject his mongrel partway through the match
Smylie got injured at the start of the Baabaa game remember? Hopefully Smith gets the full match. I think Sweeney will be a pleasant surprise actually, in the games i have seen him play he switches the way he plays immensely depending on the position hes in. He isn't stupid and he knows he will have Hosea Gear next to him so i don't think distribution will be a big problem. He runs hard and should do a good job of straigtening up the line so Hosea gets space.
Overall happy with the team

I think we will have to agree to disagree about Murray- I think he's a solid scrummager, and is good around the field. I missed the first 20 mins of the Maori v babas game so can't coment about the start of the game, however in the scrums I saw the problem seemed to be coming almost exclusively from the other side, where MacIntosh was (illegally I thought) boring in on Newlands. I suppose we will see how Murray goes this week, though if he gives away another penalty as stupid as the one against the babas I will join the "Bronson Murray is crap club"!

Gear is without a doubt the most powerful wingering in NZ. I think it has to be mentioned, Gear is not typical of the rest of the team, he should be an All Black. There is no one else quite in his class in the Maori team.
