[RWC2023] Tonga vs Romania (08/10/2023)

What a finish in the corner.

Romania really knackered. Not helped being down to 14 men

After the jumbo-Vismo/quickstep merger there will be some cycling doctors looking for jobs. Rugby Europe should hire them to work for all their tier 2s.

Some decent stuff from Romania given Connache was a scrum half playing fly half again due to injuries to three or possbly four preferred options at that position. The points difference ended up being about right against the ANZAC Tongans if both sides were fully fit. So I make that a slightly above average Romanian performance.

Glad to see them restore some pride after being spanked by three of the world's top five in the most stupid group the sport will ever witness. Hopefully the Romanians will take the Super Cup more seriously as a way to improve their competitiveness in the next RWC cycle. Qualification in Europe could be a dogfight with Georgia not autoqualifying.

Tonga's record win at a Rugby World Cup.
Not surprising. They (and Samoa) were instantly about 15-20 points per game better when permitted to play capped Aussies and ABs. I think they will be extremely disappointed with their campaign.

Judging by this thumbnail Romanian stalwart scrumhalf Surugiu is retiring to pursue a career signing Luther Vandross covers.
