New Zealand v South Africa

Couple of questions for the kiwis.[/b]

<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div>
1. Exactly what is our line out coach doing, two years down the track and it's still a weakness[/b]

Steven Hansen is in charge of the line-out. and it is an utter shambles. Ian Jones gave a great analysis of what was wrong with our lineout after the match. He reckons we try to compete with Matfield instead of avoiding him. You watch what the Boks do. No matter who's throw in it is, they get there FIRST, and get their players into position FIRST, effectively dictating what we do. What we need is an experienced line-out caller, not Isaac Ross. We need our line out caller to see where Matfield is standing, and put our jumpers somewhere he isn't. If Matfield is in the middle, put our jumper at the front or back and throw it in quickly before Matfield has a chance to change places (remember line-out players cannot change places after the ball is thrown). We are too predictable, what about some variations like peeling off with a long throw over the 15m line, or the short flat throw to the front. We have a specialist scrum coach so why not a specialist line-out coach, someone like Ian Jones. We have not had a decent line-out since Norman Maxwell retired.

<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div>
2. Can someone sack our backline coach, actually holding onto the ball is a basic skill we seem to have forgotten about.[/b]

Don't sack the coach, sack the players. Its not the coach's fault if the players cannot execute basic skills, and Nonu is the worst one for this. He is a liability, a one-dimensional liability at that. Its all very well to have a bullocking hard running player at centre, but first, he's got to be able to hold on to the f***ing pill! What the hell is a player who has no kicking skills, and no distribution skills under pressure doing in an All Black 12/13 jersey. and would someone please hire a netball coach and get her into the All Black training sessions to teach these guys how to RUN INTO A GAP.

<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div>
3. Anyone worked out a good excuse for why we lost the match, was going to blame the Ref but can't find enough evidence there.[/b]

Where do I start?
1. Our line-out was crap, their line-out was brilliant.
2. We seem to be missing some basic skills, such as catching and passing and holding on to the ball.
3. With Steyn able to kick penalty goals from 60m it cost us nine points before we worked out that it wasn't a fluke, and that we had better not give away penalties in those positions.
4. We played dumb rugby, e.g. Read's late shoulder charge on Habana, Carter's gift to JDV etc etc
5. We made some poor decisions, like not taking two gift shots at goal.
6. Poor selections, Donald is not a 12, Hore couldn't throw straight to save his life and Nonu & Rokocoko are past it. The backline looked a lot sharper when Toava and Jane came on.

Just to expand on the last line in my post above, if I was asked to pick the backs for the last 3N test against Australia, these would be my choices, and the reasons for them

Starting:
9 Jimmy Cowan
10 Dan Carter
12 Isaia Toeava
13 Casey Laulala
11 Sitiveni Sivivatu
14 Corey Jane
15 Mils Muliana

Bench:
20. Piri Weepu
21. Colin Slade
22. Israel Dagg

Unlucky:
Ryan Crotty
Sean Maitland
Rudi Wulf (injured?)

Reasons for new player inclusion:
► Jane and Toeava looked sharp and convincing when they came on Saturday
► Slade is turning into another Leon McDonald; plays almost any backline position and a never-say-die chaser and tackler.
► Dagg is just pure class
► Laulala has been unlucky with injury, but seems right now and is playing well
► Weepu is a good 9/10 cover and a good goalkicker.

Justification for making the changes:
► We've already lost the tri-nations
► We've already won the Bledisloe Cup
► This is a "nothing" test. We have little gain or lose.
► There are less than two years left until RWC2011, and there are a number of players in the current All Black squad who aren't going to be there if they don't get their **** sorted. A few changes will give them a rocket up the arse.

No Hosea Gear? seriously, why wont people give him a chance, he keeps out performing every wing in the NPC and yet still isn't considered.

Is there not a halfback in New Zealand who gets to the ruck quickly and delivers the ball equally as fast, rather than standing around giving the defence time to set itself? I couldn't see some things/remember some things from the actual match, but sometimes Cowan is so slow and it doesn't help take any pressure off the team.

And I'm sure Gear would be in there somewhere if he was playing for Canterbury. :p

Are the ABs still playing with that flat backline attack? Am i the only one not a fan? At the end of the game just before the McCaw try, there was a wide as pass to Jane on the wing. He was standing flat so he had to stand there to wait for the pass, by the time he caught it the Boks were there to tackle him. Whereas if he were to stand a bit deeper, he could've run onto the ball therefore avoiding the on-coming defense. He was probably waiting for a cross kick which is why he was standing flat but still.

When players get tackled the support players are to flat and doesn't allow the players going into the rucks/breakdowns with much impetus and momentum and are usually a half a sec too slow in supporting because they'd have to stop and come around the "gate." I believe standing deeper will enable the AB's to be more mongrel in the rucks because they won't have to stop and take a few steps back to go in.

Flat backline makes Nonu step (tries to) and jink left and right before straightening up. He needs to stand deep, run full pelt into the ball and bump some people off! if he can catch first that is. Argh!

Toeava a 12? I dont think so. When he came on the whole dynamic of the game had changed, the boks were really puffing, and the game had started to open up. He may be a wonderful impact player at 13 (much like Nonu) but in my opinion anyway he doesn;t have the distribution skills or experience to play at 12.

Watched the post match interviews yesterday of the game and PDV owned one of our stupid reporters when asked "so are you going to be able to find anything to do in Hamilton tonight" of which PDV replied "Yes well we managed to find the Tri-Nations Cup" hahahaha idiot reporter thought he was clever asking a silly question like that.

Yeah shame on the reporter... i saw it all over the news the past week, it was joked time and time again. He/she had to ask after we lost, bloody marnus.

i had strange mental pictures of PDV gettin jiggy with it, on the stage at the outback in hamiltron
