H Cup Quarter Final : Harlequins vs Munster

Munster proved me wrong today, but I think the "desire" that drove them on in the second half will be matched by Clermont and ultimately this upset should not paper over the cracks in the Munster squad. It was great performance, but it must be built upon of anything is to be proven.

In regards to the match, POC as mentioned before was sublime and simply has the answers. He has the ability to lift players around while change games and momentum at vital points... All the assetts of a true legend. POM was very good today aswell, when he concentrates on his game he offers a lot of dynamism and skill. I also thought O'Donnell was very good again today, he balances the back row superbly and in reality the Munster Backrow completely out played the Quins backrow. Downey had his best game in a red shirt because he was used correctly. Zebo is very special.... He makes things happen and offers that but of magic that Munster so often need. It's was a top team performance that showed the exact way of beating this Quins side.

Beating Clermont is however a whole new challenge. Clermont will stop at nothing to reach the final this year, they know destiny awaits them. Having said that, if there is any team in Europe capable of spoiling a party through achieving the impossible, it's Munster. The key to victory will be trying to install doubt in Clermont. They haven't played Munster in recent years but the collisions are building to ***anic proportions.

Ah sure Munster aren't at the races if ROG isn't falling off tackles left, right and centre.

Great result though. Can't say I expected it. Disaster for Quins really, much like last year's result against Connacht it shows that whether it be down to a lack of class, experience or bottle, they aren't near ready to compete at the pinnacle of European rugby.

coonor it could be that over hyping Clermont might be a dangerous thing too and while I agree with you in that our squad still has problems it was more we used our players strengths correctly and when we do use the strengths correctly then we are a veryy good team. As in Downey is a crash ball man, Laulala is a guy who can ride off the tackle and pick gaps like today and our pack executed what they do best a territorial based effort that seeds doubt in opposition.
ROG mixed today as well as he has in years going deep when needed but also taking the ball up flat too. Downey made breakline constantly today and our backrow was everywhere today.
Also it hasn't been noted but 2 things I'd say:
Downey put Brown out of game today because after that tackle he wanted nothing to do with the game and went in to a shell and also I always rated Monye but I think today he was good in a poor game and I think he could have an outside bet at going to Aus

I miss James Downey. Not a varied skill set, but who needs it when you go forward and make the hard yards as often as he does?

I think it's a shame he wasn't given a crack for Ireland when D'Arcy's form completely bombed.

I can't see the gifs because I'm on my phone, I presume it's O'Gara missing tackles and duck trying to make out ROG had a bad game so he was not proven wrong even though he outplayed Nick Evans.

Vintage ROG. Munster's pack showed up immensely and won them penalties. And now O'Gara will get the credit because he finished up with the points, and he didn't even kick that well, not many of his kicks were hard and he missed 2 very simple ones. And to add to that, his tackling was as per usual a mere speedbump, and his inaccurate passing behind his centres stunted Munster attacks. I wouldn't say he had a great game, or that he did anything to make the statement "he outplayed Evans". Munster won thanks to their physicality they fronted up with and O'Connell and O'Mahony stepping up whilst Quins seemed to go into their shell and not match Munster for physicality. Munster's backplay was actually very mediocre, and given the territory and pressure they put on they should have scored at least a try, but the defence in the backs was very good, but again that is excepting ROG. It was in spite of O'Gara not because, yet his supporters will try and convince otherwise just like they have for years in him garnering too much credit for the hard work of the likes of O'Connell, Jim Williams, Wallace.

Not 1 media outlet or fan is saying ROG was star just he did all his role nicely which he did. POC getting plaudits as is Munster back row deservedly so and only back really getting huge credit is Downey and considering he's had alot of stick and turned in that type of game yesterday he deserves plaudits so Duck seriously listen or read before make comments that aren't existing. Because I haven't yet to see ROG been hailed the hero yesterday. It was clear to everyone this game was win up front and its barely even acknowledged who got kicks for either team. So if you hate ROG fair enough but what the F has it to do with yesterday

The comments (well at least the one I replied to) are existing. The one I replied to was saying how he had a good game and outplayed Evans.

Also don't bring hating ROG into this. I gave reasons for my criticisms and point to direct instances of the match where he was poor (hence the GIFS), it's not like the one eyed hate of Wilkinson that is going on in the other thread, I am giving criticism of his performance on the pitch on the day, I will give credit when due if he performs well even though I dislike him.

On another note, nobody outside of Ireland likes ROG as he single handedly lost the 2009 Lions tour and from interviews he comes across and arrogant twat.

So you find ROG outplayed Nick Evans even though noone mentioned it here, say he hogged credit even though he got none say he played poor yet probably had 1 of his better games in years, he makes more tackles than any other games this season (more than Evans and Lowe combined) missed 3 yet he was worst tackler and now you say he lost 3 game series for Lions all on his own yet there no ROG hating :D

1. It is mentioned that ROG outplayed Evans here.
2. If that was one "of his better games in years" then that just says a lot about his performances then. How can that be one of his better games when he missed 2 easy kicks, couldn't tackle and his poor passing hurt the backline moves despite getting good amounts of quick ball. He did a couple of good punt kicks, but that does not mean he was great yesterday.
3. ROG single handedly lost the 2nd Test of the Lions series, which made the series lost after that. He also then was deluded and arrogant enough to bleat off to press later about how he didn't get enough opportunities on the tour and should have been starting ahead of Stephen Jones. His awfulness with the Lions is nothing to do with my dislike of him, it's the truth.

First of all Einstein you said " The comments (well at least the one I replied to) are existing. The one I replied to was saying how he had a good game and outplayed Evans."

Secondly, who said he was great yesterday???????? He played well nobody said great and nobody has said he's been playing well lately so yes it does show how his recent performances are. And if 3 missed tackles is what a terrible game when he made 6/7 well compared to before thats ok especialy with Evans missing 6 and Lowe 3 too. And well his passing wasn't that bad yesterday but your going to say that anyway.

Thirdly, you have worst knowledge than I thought if you solely blame ROG for 2nd test loss. Yes he missed tackle (add in he is not a 12) but Phillips and Bowe were poor there too. As for 2nd incident he was concussed as was proven after and I take it if you watched Ireland lately you can see difference that can make, but even if he wasn't score was 25-25 when that penalty was conceded now I have bit of college paper for IT and Physiotherapy but maths maybe tricky so I ask if it finished SA 25 - 25 Lions and we were already down from the first game (which ROG was to blame for too for all the penalties conceded at scrum time) how in the name of god did he cost us the series.

Here a stat as I on analysis of it:
ROG missed 2 tackles made 5 so 5/7 - 71.5% success
Lowe attempted 5 made 2 so 2/5 - 40%
Care attempted 4 missed 3 so 1/4 - 25%
Evans 4/8 50%

Munster missed 3 tackles all match - ROG 2 and Jones 1
Quins missed 15.

First of all Einstein you said " The comments (well at least the one I replied to) are existing. The one I replied to was saying how he had a good game and outplayed Evans."
I don't know what you're on about here.

I don't think he played well. Just because Munster won doesn't mean he played well, his punt kicking (bar a couple) was pretty good, but his goal kicking wasn't that special missing 2 pretty simple kicks, his tackling was typically awful, and his passing was a reason as to why Munster's backs couldn't capitalise on quick ball and score a try. There were times in the match where Munster just passed the ball from side to side and went absolutely nowhere. That is not having a that good a game.

I also don't know where you got your stats from, Evans didn't miss a tackle according to scrum.com and I didn't see him get put on his derrière like ROG and needing to babysit by forwards either. Also ROG didn't make as many tackles as you make out either, just 3, most of which was just him lending his puny weight alongside a forward doing the hard work. As for his passing. How about some visual evidence of why it was poor. In this instance below, you can see how his pass behind Laulala completely stunts the backline move as Laulala can't run onto the ball (any back knows how inaccurate passing behind like that ruins the move forcing the move to stop momentarily) and Munster's backs end up going nowhere.

I disagree. Phillips and Bowe had much further to make up and did their best effort to get there. It was ROG who was needed to stop Fourie, or at least grab onto him and slow him down enough to help Phillips and Bowe get across to in time to cover for his incompetent puny tackling. As it happened, ROG just acted like a doormat and barely slowed Fourie down at all. Also he was playing 10 and Stephen Jones 12.

So ROG cost 7 points there, not ideal that the good work of the first 60 was undone there, but at least the Lions could take a draw, but no thanks to ROG's brainless effort in the last minute. Not even that, and thanks to him costing 10 points any opportunity to win or draw the series was gone and the series was lost. The fact he went off to the media saying how he should have started, despite his nightmare display, also says a lot about him and his arrogance off the field also.

That wasn't the first time he has shown god awful defence that has cost the Lions points as well by the way. Yet of course, his supporters are equally as deluded as he is himself. In fact his fans are still touting him as a Lions contender even as recently this year (http://www.independent.ie/sport/rugby/ogara-stakes-lions-claim-with-classy-display-28955246.html).

Man you loosing an argument hands down that you have to go ALL the way back to 2009 for a defense I'll as so in easy way:

Post #128 you say ROG getting all credit when nobody mentioned him
Post #130 you say you were replying on this thread to a comment that he outplayed Evans yet nobody said he did.
You highlight he missed tackles and try paint as he was worst yet he was far from worst tackler.
Then you try blame him for loosing 09 tour and well even if I gave it to you in what 20 mins total he manged to loose 3 games on his own (missing the 3rd test). Although now you have went from winning to drawn due to bad maths I guess. And what had Lions 4 years ago to do with yesterday I don't know.
some great passes too (no it wasn't vintage but decent).

And just to ask did you watch game yesterday. You do know any time Munster went wide the majority of times they went forward. But they played it tight so it was rare they went wide yeah. And you do know that everyone agrees ROG missed 2 easy kicks but responded with kicking everything else. And you did realize it was Munster keeping pressure on Quins like man your smelling of desperation and I got my stats from Munster Rugby and analysing which is where my job is and from analysts who've went over from all angles but keep digging as I said visual evidence does show there was faults yes but again your friends Casper the ghost and Co who said ROG outplayed Evans and got all plaudits probably keep digging trying to convince yourselves. And ESPN is hardly gospel from what I have heard here in past ;)

Oh yea if you truly desperate and want to point out a few of ROG getting steam rolled in a Munster Jersey bit more recent there is a few with Heaslip and I think Cullen went through him, Downey did before and in Saints game last year when he got Drop Goal there was definitely 1 or 2 :D Just to give you less desperation and at least it looks more recent :D
